The new school year is upon us and we are ramping up to improve our car to take on next years track challenge! We need to install new solar panels($11,455), repair and upgrade the front suspension, change the drivers cockpit, insulate the bottom of the car for the extreme heat and the list goes on and on. This is the time of year that we look for sponsors to help our team reach our goal of 1st place overall at the the one and only Solar Car Challenge. Our students that participate in this amazing program put a ton of effort to get to the race every year. We have sponsorship packets ready if you have a business in mind. Hello from the Wylie East Solar Car Team:
Last night was bittersweet. We were informed of what was said to be “disturbing news” by our head advisor, Tony Roseberry. The race had been cancelled due to 15 of our judges contracting covid, something that no one could have anticipated. There was no one to run our race anymore, and only two teams had not been exposed (ours was not one of them). This was certainly tough news to come to terms with, as we had only just begun to understand our car to the fullest of its abilities, and our seniors were not given the opportunity to see their hard work to the end of the race, fully finished. However, what we had been able to accomplish in this short time was undeniably remarkable for both our team and in the context of the Solar Car Challenge race. We had finished racing 100 miles in just over three hours, beating out the times of almost all teams except for the Iron Lions, an advanced team which had won in around two hours. We also won 2 day trophies out of the 3 awarded. We lost 1st place by 24 miles, and lost out on 4 days and over 500 miles of racing.
Though this race was cut short, we did all that we could, saw beautiful sights, raced 430.2 miles in total (woop!), and worked efficiently as both a team and as friends. This will be an experience which we will surely never forget.
Our 2nd place trophy (though an accomplishment) will remain in its protective wrapping which it came in, as this race will never be finished as it was meant to be.
Thank you all for sticking by us, and we can’t wait for our next season! DUBEAST!

Updates from Wylie East Solar!🚙
WOW, has this been the trip of our lives! Firstly, we were covered in the news, alongside our solar car counterparts, before working all day towards clearing all tests and making minor final modifications to our car (pictures 2 and 3). After this day, during the final day of scrutineering (and with only a few hours to spare), we passed all 7 rounds of testing! This success ensured our spot in the Solar Car Challenge cross country race, something we could not have been more excited about! The following day we began our race in less than favorable weather, as cloud cover was immense and rain drizzle covered our start line. However, after dealing with the lack of charging due to the weather and some issues with a connection regarding our battery management system (pictures 5 and 6), we won the most miles in a day with 162 miles total (picture 1)!
Throughout this race, we have travelled straight through rural Texas, as well as New Mexico; these places have provided us with absolutely breathtaking scenery that we will surely never forget.
Currently we are in El Paso, stationed at our hotel after racing another 100 miles and being the second solar car to the finish line! This day has allowed us to further understand the abilities of both our team and our car, and have made us feel even more invigorated to race the next upcoming days. Tomorrow is a rest day, but with the start of Thursday will come a readiness and strong effort that is the WYLIE WAY!

Race day #2 recap
The day started out with good weather, unlike yesterday’s rain, and the team prepped the car in the wee hours to go from Snyder TX to Carlsbad NM. We ended up pushing a little hard yesterday and had to be more conservative today to make up for it but the Solar Beast ended up with around 149 miles!! The teamwork was awesome, every student was doing their part to be at the front of this amazing challenge. It was really cool to see the students calculate aerospace calculations on the fly!
We won’t know our position until tomorrow’s race meeting but we will keep you posted
