Here are 10 great ways to get some exercise and enjoy National Park Week:
Take a Hike
There are 18,600 miles of trails in national parks. Hit the trail for a short hike or a day-long expedition. Cross the Continental Divide on the High Line Trail in Glacier , go vertical on the Moro Rock Trail in Sequoia & Kings Canyon , or tackle a section of the Appalachian Trail . If you'd like to hike with an expert, many parks offer daily ranger-led guided tours, including theEverglades , Jean Lafitte , and Hot Springs . To help you stay hydrated, drink plenty of water while you enjoy the park.
Dive In
Enjoy 43,000 miles of national park shoreline. Walk on the beach, go for a swim, snorkel an underwater trail in the Virgin Islands , or dive the aquamarine water and fish-bejeweled coral reefs of Biscayne or the kelp forests and sea caves of Channel Islands . Or, take a canoe or kayak ride through Big Cypress to observe manatees and birds.
Go Underground
Travel below the surface and discover the dazzling sights found along more than 900 miles of passageways in caves. Check out Mammoth Cave – the longest cave in the world or the 14-acre Big Room in Carlsbad Caverns . If you are really adventurous, sign up for a spelunking trip.
Sleep Under the Stars
Experience the simple pleasure of an evening campfire, sleep in the great outdoors, and wake up in some of the most beautiful surroundings in the world. Choose your setting – mountain view, ocean view, or even city view. The 12,000 campsites in national parks include spots in New York City and in Boston .
Go For a Ride
Some of the prettiest scenery you'll ever see is along the 5,450 miles of paved road in national parks. In fact, 1,100 miles are designated parkways designed especially for sightseeing. Just be sure to get out of the car at overlooks or trailheads and stretch your legs. It's amazing what you will find not far off the road. Grab a piece of fruit to enjoy as you wander to a waterfall atShenandoah or meander through a meadow at Rocky Mountain .
View Wildlife
National parks are the best places to view wildlife in their natural habitats. Don't get too close but enjoy seeing everything from baby birds to two-ton bison in a park. Watch the strutting sage grouse perform its annual courtship dance in Grand Teton or the spring migration of grey whales at Point Reyes . Or, encounter prehistoric wildlife such as a saber tooth cat at Badlands or a Stegosaurus at Dinosaur . There are 233 national parks with preserved fossils, some of which date back two billion years.
Be a VIP
Help out as a Volunteer-In-Park on National Volunteer Day on April 21. Participate in the spring planting at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens , a shoreline clean-up at Golden Gate , or park day atStones River . Check out a list of volunteer opportunities athttp://www.nps.gov/getinvolved/volunteer.htm
Go Green
Take part in Earth Day activities at many national parks. There will 50 exhibiters, food, music, and family activities at John Muir's birthday celebration at John Muir National Historic Site . Saratoga will host exhibits and an art show featuring pieces made from natural and recycled material. The Grand Canyon will have a variety of interactive exhibits at its largest ever Earth Day event.Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial will host an Earth Day Jamboree. Carry a reusable bottle for easy access to water as you enjoy the Earth Day activities.
Explore, Learn, Protect
Kids five to 12 years old are encouraged to take part in free Junior Ranger programs in almost every national park. Ask for a Junior Ranger booklet at the visitor center and earn a badge by completing different activities. Many parks will host special events on Junior Ranger Day – April 28.
Take to Two Wheels
One of the most popular things to do in a park is ride a bike. You set your own pace and can easily stop to relax or take in the view when and where you want. One of the newest bike trails was recently built in New River Gorge . More than 1,400 Boy Scouts and leaders volunteered 78,544 hours to construct a 12.8-mile mountain bike trail. Other popular parks for biking includeAcadia which has 45 miles of old carriage roads, Canyonlands , home of the 103-mile White Rim Road loop, and the C&O Canal and its 184-mile long towpath.
Be sure to share photos, videos, and stories from your national park travels atwww.nationalparkweek.org . The site also contains a calendar of events and plenty of information on how to visit and support national parks.

Simple Butternut Squash Soup | Simply Fresh Cooking

Wellness recipe for the week, this recipe is a wonderful addition to any hearty fall meal, or on it's own.
Extra Squash this Fall? Healthy and low-calorie this fall delight is great for cool, chilly fall nights! Simple Butternut Squash Soup
Ingredients
• 1 (3-pound) butternut squash
• Extra-virgin olive oil, for roasting, plus 2 tablespoons
• Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper
• 2 shallots, chopped
• 1 quart low-sodium chicken stock
• 1-2 teaspoons curry powder, optional
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
2. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut off just the stem from the squash, then cut squash in half, lengthwise. Drizzle the cut edges with oil and season with salt and pepper. Lay the squash cut side down on a foil-lined baking sheet. Roast until very soft, about 1 hour. Remove squash from the oven and turn the halves over and let them stand until cool enough to handle. Scoop the flesh from the shell and remove to a bowl. Discard the shell.
3. In a large saucepan or Dutch oven with a lid, heat the 2 tablespoons of oil over medium heat. Add the shallots and cook until softened, about 6 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the squash flesh, chicken stock, and curry powder (if using) and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer. Cover and cook until the squash is broken down, about 10 minutes.
4. Cool the squash mixture for about 5 minutes before adding it to a blender or food processor. Working in batches, puree the mixture until smooth, transferring the puree to a clean saucepan as you work. Season the soup with salt and pepper, to taste, and simmer a few minutes over medium heat to combine the flavors. Ladle the soup into serving bowls and serve immediately.

Weekly Wellness Tip 9/11 Dealing with the fall out of 9/11

Remember EAP is available to assist you if you need to talk or are having difficulty dealing with 9/11 or any other troubling life events. Free and always confidential, EAP can be reached at 1-800-543-5080

September 11, 2013 marks the 12th anniversary of a series of terrorist attacks that our nation will never forget. While some have moved forward and recovered from the trauma that occurred on this date, many, especially those who lived in New York City and were in close proximity to the attacks, are still dealing with the fallout of these horrific events. The anniversary date in particular is a time which may be triggering to many. This effect, called the Anniversary Effect, is not unusual for those who have experienced a traumatic event in their lives and may be a time when you experience resurgence in the symptoms of anxiety, grief or depression that you may have felt that you had already conquered.
Some coping tips which may help you to cope with the 9/11 anniversary:
• Be aware that you may have a strong emotional reaction around the time of the anniversary.
• Take care of yourself by eating well, exercising and getting plenty of rest.
• Talk about your feelings with friends, family or a counselor.
• Do something special to mark the date, such as attending a memorial.
• Don't hesitate to seek professional help if you need extra assistance in dealing with your feelings.

Check out these handy tips to reduce stress and create a calmer space, may that be in your home or workplace.

1. Meditate
It's easier than you may think. Here's how: Settle into a comfortable position in a chair or on the floor. Then follow your breath -- in, out -- for a few minutes. Thoughts are bound to bubble up in your mind -- no problem. Just let them float by and turn your attention back to your breath. Meditating daily, even just for a few minutes, may help tame stress.

2. Sniff a lemon. For a quick de-stressing trick, turn to an underrated sense -- your sense of smell. Japanese researchers found that linalool; a substance found in lemons, may turn down the classic "flight-or-fight" stress response. Not into lemons? Try basil, juniper, or lavender -- those scents have also been found to lower stress.

3. Clear your desk. From stray papers to scattered coffee mugs, clutter can make you lose focus and curb productivity. Declutter your outer environment and you may feel more organized and better able to concentrate on the task at hand.

4. Keep a gratitude diary. Take a minute every day to write down what you're thankful for -- big or small. It's easy to vent about weather, traffic, or job woes, but complaining brings negative energy along with it. Being thankful for what you have can make you appreciate all the positives in your life.

5. Prioritize. Give yourself permission to admit that you can't do everything, all at once. Instead, you can nibble away at your to-do list, and feel more satisfied, by setting some priorities. So make a list, figure out what really matters, what can wait, and what you can skip. Work your way down the list, handling your top priorities first. Bit by bit, you'll get there!

CDC - How to Quit Smoking - Resources - Smoking & To***co Use

Weekly Wellness Tip 8/22 Love your lungs and everywhere else too…..
Tips for kicking the habit, remember- you aren’t the only one who benefits when you quit smoking. Your families’ risk of asthma and other respiratory disorders will decrease, you will have more cash in your pocket for something fun and even the environment will benefit, ci******es are the most littered item in America and the world. Cigarette filters are made of cellulose acetate tow, NOT COTTON, and they can take decades to degrade.

Healthy Non-smokers’ lungs Smokers’ Lungs
1. Measuring Victory - Forget about quitting "forever." Like attempting the seemingly impossible task of eating an entire elephant, it's the biggest psychological bite imaginable. Instead, work hard at adopting a realistic and do-able victory yardstick that celebrates freedom an hour, challenge and day at a time. If you insist on seeing success only in terms of quitting forever then on which day will you celebrate?
2. Emotional Phases - Chemical dependency upon smoking ni****ne is one of the most intense, repetitive and dependable relationships you've likely ever known. It has infected almost every aspect of your life and thinking. Be prepared to experience a normal sense of emotional loss when quitting that gradually transports you through six very different phases: (1) denial, (2) anger, (3) bargaining, (4) depression, (5) acceptance, and (6) complacency. This emotional journey is normal and a necessary part of recovery.
3. Know your brain - Ni****ne rewired your brain, growing millions of nicotinic receptors in eleven different regions. Although your mind's ni****ne induced dopamine/adrenaline intoxication is an alert high, your chemical dependency is every bit as real and permanent as alcoholism. Treating a true addiction as though it were some nasty little habit is a recipe for relapse. There is no such thing as just one puff. Ni****ne dependency recovery truly is an all or nothing proposition.
4. Caffeine/Ni****ne Interaction - Amazingly, ni****ne somehow doubles the rate by which the body depletes caffeine. Yes, your blood-serum caffeine level will double if no caffeine intake reduction is made when quitting. Although not a problem for most light to moderate caffeine users, consider cutting caffeine intake by roughly half if troubled by anxieties or experiencing difficulty relaxing or sleeping.
5. The Smoking Dream - Be prepared for an extremely vivid smoking dream as to***co odors released by horizontal healing lungs are swept up bronchial tubes by rapidly healing cilia and come in contact with a vastly enhanced sense of smell. See it as the wonderful sign of healing it reflects and nothing more.
6. Relapse - Remember that there are only two good reasons to take a puff once you quit. You decide you want to go back to your old level of consumption until smoking cripples and then kills you, or you decide you really enjoy withdrawal and you want to make it last forever. As long as neither of these options appeals to you the solution is as simple as ... no ni****ne just one day at a time, Never Take Another Puff!
7. More resources can be found at the number below or at http://www.cdc.gov/to***co/quit_smoking/how_to_quit/resources/index.htm

Wellness is important to us at Bell, so the HR office started sharing weekly wellness tips with employees, here is a few for our Facebook friends too!
1. MAKE FRIENDS AT THE OFFICE.

People who have close pals at work are less likely to experience stress-induced high blood pressure than those who lack a social-support network, says a report in the American Journal of Public Health.

2. ADD COCOA TO YOUR COFFEE.

New research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry confirms that cocoa contains more cancer- and heart-disease-fighting antioxidants than dark, baking, or milk chocolate. Plus, it packs fewer than 10 calories per teaspoon and has zero fat.

3. CLEAN UP YOUR CONTACTS.

Simply plunking your lenses into the case each night won’t protect you from eye infections, warns Deepinder K. Dhaliwal, M.D., director of cornea and refractive surgery at the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine. “After washing your hands, gently rub each lens with a few drops of cleaning solution to dislodge bacteria and fungi as well as surface grit," she says. Then place the lenses in a solution-filled case overnight.

4. BE READY TO SAVE YOUR LIFE.

Think the poison-control hotline is only for households with kids? Not so. According to the Ministry of Health, Malaysia, the majority of poisoning admissions to hospitals are adults and involving pharmaceutical agents. Post the number of the National Poison Centre (1800-88-8099) next to all your phones and program it into your cell phone.

5. MAKE TIME FOR MUSIC

Several studies have found that listening to music can help lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and boost mood. The right music has the power to change your attitude. So load up your MP3 player and create a playlist that will make you smile -- whether you're working or working out. As long as you don't blast it (bad for your hearing), this is a safe, healthy way to make your day more enjoyable.
