Design Competition Proposal - PRIZREN URBAN RESIDENCE 2024

Urban Residences is our proposed entry for an international design competition for 4.2 hectares of dense mixed-use development, initiated in 2024 by a joint venture of private investors Agullimi A & Bel Group sh.p.k in Prizren, Kosovo.

This proposal aimed to intertwine a sustainable urban solution, contemporary architecture, and cultural and natural heritage values of the place.

The proposed morphology of the overall buildings is inspired from the local nature heritage, more particularly the hills and mountains in the background and the river as an important element of the city. The geometries and patterns from local cultural and architectural heritage are used as inspiration for the material patterns of the façade and throughout the development.

It is planned as a reference point for the new part of the city and aims to set a new standard of urban development with a focus on people and community, in contrast to the existing, car-oriented developments.

The urban development plan for the vacant lot is designed to be pedestrian-oriented, with vehicular movement limited to the perimeter or placed underground. The green areas exceed significantly the local urban codes. The overall development is divided into two main areas: the active area consisting of commercial and housing, and a quieter area planned solely to housing.

INFILL HOUSE - underconstruction

THE HORIZON EDUCATION CENTER is completed.

This project is a transformation of a commercial space into a part-time learning center for kids of elementary schools, ages of 5-10. A colorful space, with an overall mystic layout of spaces, aiming to nurture kids’ curiosity for exploring various learning settings, that aims to contribute to their long-term development, by also strengthening their confidence in regards to exploring new territories.

Main entry of the learning center leads kids to the main common area, which is a labyrinth like hallway that takes them to various classes. There are total of five classes, consisting of specific themes, aiming to set learning activities in different settings, such as TOKA meaning the earth, UJI meaning the water, GJITHËSIA meaning the space, AVENTURA meaning adventure, and ARTI meaning the arts.
In addition, there is a playing corner, named ‘XHUNGLA’ the jungle, where various relaxing activities such as yoga or dart playing can take place. A special attention is paid to the kitchen and dining spaces, the large windows of which offer plentiful natural light and a close connection with the exteriors.

Spaces filled with natural light, consisting of warm wood flooring and pastel color palette create joyful setting for learning, playing and relaxation. Recycled materials, modular furniture, low VOC paints, local craftsmanship further enhance the qualities of the interiors.

We are excited to wrap up the year of 2023! This was a very successful year for our office, with projects of various scales, national and international, which all had SUSTAINABILITY in common. Happy to also have participated in KSWD 2023 and at the World Congress of Architecture 2023 in Copenhagen, highlighting our commitment to sustainable design. We look forward to a brighter and greener future ahead!

This is a proposal for retrofitting ROW HOUSING in existing Warehouse buildings, in a small town of Hornhausen, Oschersleben, Germany. We chose to retrofit housing function in an old buildings, as opposed to prioritizing our/architects' desire for new signature construction. This decision is environmentally responsible, as it reduces resource consumption and minimizes waste. There are benefits in social aspects as well, as we preserve cultural heritage of the existing neighborhood and contribute to community revitalization. RETROFITTING vs DEMOLITION&NEW CONSTRUCTION is also more cost-effective.
In the two warehouses, we have housed row-housing, 13 units in total. The overall compound offers one individual car parking garage for each unit, community outdoor open space and kids playground area. We look forward to this this transformation taking place!

We are happy to share our proposal for the learning center Horizon Education

We believe that designing spaces in a mystic way holds profound importance as it nurtures kids’ curiosity and strengthens self-assurance to explore new territories. By incorporating elements of mystery, these spaces engage children’s inborn sense of wonder, encouraging them to venture beyond their comfort zones.

This, in turn, fosters a spirit of daring and experimentation, instilling the belief that the unknown can hold transformative experiences. The proposed spaces kindle the flames of curiosity and inspire kids to step boldly into the unknown, embracing the exhilarating thrill of trying new things and exploring new places. We consider that the design of such spaces becomes a catalyst for personal growth, fostering a mindset of endless exploration and self-assuredness.

The entry of the learning center and the main common area is a mystic and labyrinth like hallway that leads users to various spaces. While exploring, kids will find themselves in different spaces that attempt set the learning activity in different settings.
TOKA class instills the nature dimension and learning by doing while UJI class brings in the cool environment. AVENTURA and GJITHËSIA classes are environments that tend to raise the energy in the learning process and interaction; while the ART class is a space for creative expression.

ETNOMANIA Boutique Hotel transformation is completed!

ETNOMANIA project is a transformation of a single-family house into a boutique hotel. Although the existing house was located in the city center of Prishtina, in one of the old urban neighborhoods, Tophane, the building is not very old and there were no architectural values to be preserved during this intervention. In order to retrofit the new function, an annex was added to fit out the restaurant and reception area of the hotel.

The cultural heritage values and the spirit of the place have been key intervention drivers to this project. Manifestation of the precious cultural and architectural heritage is reached through integration and interpretation of symbols, objects, and materials. Ethnographic elements such as ‘qilimi’ (local rug), ‘kasnak’ (sewing accessory), ‘funi’ (baking accessory), and the ‘oriental window frames’ from old urban homes, were thoughtfully integrated in the proposal.

The mission of ETNOMANIA boutique hotel is to promote local hospitality. This is a place where a visitor can stay, enjoy the local food, local culture and local craftsmanship. In addition, there is an inner garden as a peaceful green oasis where one can use as an escape from the ‘urban jungle’ of Prishtina city center.

The new annex is a temporary construction, where steel structure is used as a system that can be disassembled and reused in the future. The architecture of the new exteriors contrasts the old by using the new materials with dark colors, big windows that offer maximum transparency and natural light in contrast to the existing building smaller windows.

The interior surfaces are treated with neutral materials and colors in order to reveal the local decorations and craftsmanship. The patterns of ‘qilimi’ are used in the seating areas and on the concrete flooring of the restaurant. Curtains with oriental details and ceiling panels inspired from ‘kasnak’ further enhance the interiors in the rich visual aspect and in acoustic aspect as well.

The walls of the existing corridors of the former house are used as exhibition areas for local artists, as they are invited to display their arts and crafts for periods of time. Visitors of the hotel are exposed to local arts and crafts; they can also purchase them as souvenirs as e memory from Prishtina.

Raising awareness of the pressing environmental issues in the construction industry is a must. Medium to big design/build companies that are implementing large projects in Kosovo, housing and other types, participated for this education and awareness activity. It is important that they understand the importance of the climate change issue, their responsibility as leaders of construction industry and their role that they can play. Energy rating systems such as LEED and BREEAM where discussed in more detail.

Prishtina Avant-Garde Housing Project proposal is in the conceptual design phase, through which we aim to push the boundaries of the local ‘conventional’ housing designs, and open up for innovation and creativity for these types of development. We aim to challenge the status quo of the local housing projects, through experimentation with new forms, materials and technologies. SHARE Architects return in Kosovo with a second event: International Architecture and Technology Innovation Forum SHARE Pristina 2023. On the 10th of March, at the Klan Arena, the focus will be on the main themes of "Living and working architecture” and "Sustainable facades: Design and technology”.

SHARE Pristina 2023 will provide attendees with access to knowledge and new opportunities for collaboration, bringing together national and internationally renowned speakers, innovators in architecture and building technologies.

The event is organized by SHARE Architects, one of the most active events network in the region, in partnership with Architects’ Association in Kosovo, with the support of the Municipality of Pristina.

SHARE Pristina 2023 has as guests internationally recognized personalities in the field of architecture: Bernard Khoury, Founder Bernard Khoury / DW5, Lebanon; Ian Ritchie, Founder Ritchie Studio, UK; Simonetta Cenci, Partner Ateliers Alfonso Femia, Italy, Gokhan Avcioglu, Founder GAD Architecture, Turkey; Diogo Burnay, Founder CVDB Arquitectos, Portugal; Martin Panovski, Founder RADiUs architects, North Macedonia, Matilda Pando, Founder MA Architects, Albania.
