A few of you have been asking what the purpose of the ‘Woman who Work Well’ series has been, so I thought to share a bit more on this.
Within the field of Occupational Therapy each therapist tends to find their niche, their favorite part of therapy, the bit that they’re naturally good at and have focused interest in. As the therapist spends their time researching, attending courses and practicing within this area they find their area of special interest.
My special interest is the area and role of work in a person’s life. I believe that we were created to work and that we inherently ascribe value to the job that we do or the way that we go about doing our jobs. And while our occupation/job/work may vary from person to person, the loss of the ability to participate in our occupation is life-changing to all.
I am especially interested in whether a person can go back to work or not following an injury; accident; medical treatment (such as chemotherapy); a change in life role; diagnoses. I love analysing whether a person’s functional abilities are still suited to their job, adjusting the job and figuring out practical solutions that work for both the employee and the employer. These cases are my absolute passion and drive my love for vocational therapy.
It goes without saying that I also find a great deal of pleasure when someone does their job well despite obstacles. Exceptional obstacles occasionally exist (as in the extreme health scenarios described before), but there are also daily and more common obstacles that create unexpected barriers to our ability to work. Some examples of these include the role change from woman to mother or the daunting process of changing jobs. These are some of the stories of local business woman who I have the pleasure of knowing- their stories hold real struggle and real overcoming and that inspire me to work better.
I have thus combined my passion for vocational purpose in our lives with the national theme for the month of August, and so the Woman who Work Well series was created!
Oh, and I enjoy writing when I find the time.
