Men@WorX has had an exciting week with crack repairs, skimming, smoothing, leveling, priming and painting along with damp proofing at a Guest House in Gordon's Bay with the most spectacular views of the ocean, harbour and Helderberg Mountains, and an idyllic location worth a visit.

Although the season is changing from winter to spring so too does our scope of work change from prioritising waterproofing, and roofing to painting, skimming, plastering, deck refurbishments and new deck installations, roof repairs, maintenance, and new roof installations along with building boundary walls, to repainting them, and more.

Men@WorX however wants to bring to our clients attention that although the rainy season is over in Cape Town - don't leave that nagging waterproofing, or damp proofing problem until next year again.

Spring and Summer is ideal to have that waterproofing, or damp proofing issue resolved with the right temperatures to better moisture release and ventilation for drying out, and curing damp or moisture out the surface areas. Skimming and Smoothing
After the first coat of plaster has been applied, we wait approximately 20 minutes to let the plaster dry slightly. Men@WorX then gets rid of lumps and bumps by skimming and smoothing over with the trowel.

We also, will smooth out all the corners and ends such as the bottom and top of the walls - these areas are usually difficult to plaster. We use a wet brush to even the edges out.

Men@WorX spreads the plaster firmly upwards and we flattening the float at the end of each sweep making sure for a smooth surface of plastering.

Men@WorX works from the bottom left-hand corner and upwards, filling a section from bottom to top before we move on to the next section. We use small amounts of plaster each time in combination with lots of pressure on the float, as this is the best way to ensure a smooth look and avoids excess plaster falling off the wall. We repeat until the entire walls are covered.

Applying a proper foundation is essential to the stability and longevity of the materials placed above. This applies to paint and primer as well as modern skyscrapers. Primer can help to seal the cracks and fissures in the surface below and prevent moisture or air pockets from forming and damaging the paint above. For larger paint jobs especially, those that you won’t want to repeat in the near future, we suggest you include primer in your plan for a long-lasting paint job. Unless you have been specifically told that primer is not necessary by a qualified painting expert, you will want to use primer preparation.

All About Primer - When it comes to giving your home a proper paint job, never forget the importance of primer. While it may seem unnecessary to apply a coat of paint that has no visible purpose, the advantages of this important step in the process can’t be underestimated.

Here are some of the reasons you should never forget this important step in the painting process.

Better Paint Adhesion

Adhesion is all about the capacity of the paint to stick to the surface you are painting.

Different surfaces can react differently to the paints applied and affect how well they avoid flaking and peeling in the future. Primer is designed to stick very well to all surfaces and especially well to paint. This means that in the end, the final layers of applied paint will have a better chance of enduring through the years.

This is especially important if you will be painting surfaces that don’t actually react well with the paint you are applying. There are different types of primer as well that do a better job of adhering to different surfaces so it does pay to do a little research.

Painting Over Dark Colours

If you will be painting over a dark coloured surface, the darker tones can often show right through the paints applied. Primer offers a completely opaque solution to this problem that provides a light toned surface suitable for any tone of paint. Primer can cover the darkest surface and allow for a far superior final result when switching to a lighter colour. This is often the only way to achieve any kind of even finish.

Cementitious waterproofing should be applied first PRIOR to skim coat.

We give the final coat a full day to dry, then we sand the drywall for that ultra smooth finish. In color, it may not look perfectly even, but as long as it's super smooth, the primer will do the trick to even the color prior to paint.

PRIMING is an important step that should not be skipped. A primer seals the existing wall surface, creating a uniform substrate for the skim coat. It improves the adherence of the drywall compound and reduces the absorption rate, ensuring a consistent, durable finish.

Sometimes when Dr walling isn't skimmed, you can see where the paint absorbs differently into the joint compound and drywall paper leaving the tape joints very visible especially with paint that has a sheen such as semi-gloss or gloss paints.

The process of smoothing textured walls with skim coating is fairly common. It refers to spreading a layer of joint compound over the walls to fill in the bumps and valleys in the texture, effectively creating a smooth surface.

Skim coats dry quickly. Any skim coat or the outer edges of feather coats will dry within 15 to 20 minutes.

Skim coating can last for about a decade.

PLASTERING is when it's a new wall or ceiling, while skimming is often used to describe freshening up an existing/old wall or ceiling.

Precaution : Hairline CRACKS are fine cracks on the surface of a skim coat, usually in the shape of a spider's web or eggshell cracks - Causes: Skim coat material dried too quickly. Changes in temperature and surface.

Before skim coating, we prime the wall with paint primer. Priming prepares the surface and seals loose drywall paper.

We apply one to two paint primer coats to the wall or ceiling. Waiting for the primer to fully dry before skim coating.
