Osteoarthritis is a progressive disease and can cause pain and decrease quality of life and is not just limited to older pets.

Just like humans, dogs and cats can suffer
from many different joint diseases that impact their quality of life. This includes arthritis, hip and elbow dysplasia and previous injuries.

Arthritis is a broad term to describe bony changes in the body characterised by pain, stiffness and limited mobility.

In dogs we most commonly see
osteoarthritis, caused by normal or abnormal wear and tear of the cartilage in the joints.

There are many different causes resulting in osteoarthritis in our beloved companions. Age is
one of the main contributing factors, but young dogs can also suffer from this disease.

The breed of a dog also plays a role as certain large breed dogs are more at-risk, high-risk breeds include but not limited to, Labrador Retrievers, Golden retrievers, German shepherds and Rottweilers.

Excess weight while growing and as an adult puts increased pressure on joints and
contributes to additional wear and tear on the joints.

Certain genetic factors as well as nutrition
while growing can contribute to joint defects and contribute to early development of
osteoarthritis.

Lastly previous injury and joint surgery can also cause increased risk of developing arthritis.

Early warning signs can be subtle but if we know what to look for, we can detect it sooner and
start treating it earlier, slowing the progression and improving quality of life.

- Stiffness, especially after reasting or worse in cold
weather.
- Hesitation to go up and down stairs or on and off beds
or couches.
- Easily tiring during walks or lagging.
- Lying down more often.
- Crying, whimpering, growling or snapping when
touched around certain joints.

Dog poisoning with criminal intent is unfortunately a common occurrence in South Africa. If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Signs of toxicity may include weakness or paralysis, vomiting, salivation, diarrhoea, lethargy, difficulty breathing, seizures, urination, muscle tremors and changes in behaviour.

96% of acute poisonings in pets are caused by ingestion of various items and products found in and around the home. In 2022, APCC saw a nearly 5% increase in case volume. Here are the most common categories called in for pet toxin exposure, starting with the most frequent.
1. Over the counter (OTC) medications – pain medications
2. Food – protein bars, xylitol gums, grapes/raisins
3. Human prescription medications
4. Chocolate
5. Plants
6. Household toxins – disinfecting wipes
7. Veterinary products
8. Rodenticides – these cause bleeding, seizures or kidney failure depending on the type
9. Insecticides
10. Recreational drugs- keep all edible THC products out of reach of pets

: many canine skin conditions require lifelong management. In most cases a multimodal approach recommended by your vet is required involving:

: The change in season can mean months of itching & scratching for dogs. The most common causes are allergies or parasites. Always ensure your flea treatments are up-to-date during the summer months. In severe cases, allergic dogs can get trapped in an itch-scratch cycle where the presence of allergies causes itching, the dog compensates by over grooming and scratching leading to bald patches and self-trauma. This creates further itching, causing further licking and scratching and perpetuates the problem.

: there are many canine skin conditions that can irritate the ear. If your dog is suffering from itchy ears, redness and inflammation it could be connected to a generalised skin condition or due to the presence of mites. Seek veterinary assistance if any of the following symptoms are present:
- scratching ears
- hair loss around ears
- redness & swelling
- foul smelling discharge
- bleeding, scabs or lesions
- shaking head
- crusting or scaling on edges of ears

: dogs exposed to environmental allergies have seasonal symptoms, if left untreated symptoms may worsen and become year-round over time. Common environmental or seasonal allergies are inherited, in which case it is known as atopy. Pets with atopy or seasonal allergies may need treatments & medications long term, given either regularly or just during flare-ups.

: the most common sign of an allergic dog is itchy skin, either localised (in one area) or generalised (all over the body). Dogs with allergic dermatitis often lick & scratch their skin excessively, which can lead to secondary bacterial infections often seen on the paws.
