🐘 Every elephant needs a herd. As a species, their strong family bonds and delicate social dynamics are integral to their wellbeing and survival. Because of this, orphaned elephant calves have a slim chance of survival in the wild.

🍃 HERD Trust’s elephant orphanage in South Africa gives them a fighting chance by stepping in as their family and protectors when they need it most.

Visit herd.org.za to learn more about their projects.

🐽 It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Pigcasso, the incredibly talented artist from Franschhoek, South Africa.

Rescued from a factory farm and taken in by Farm Sanctuary SA, Pigcasso's paintings have raised over $1million in funding to help other rescued animals get food and veterinary care.

Fostered by Joanne Lefson and the sanctuary staff, Pigcasso flourished - expressing herself through art. Curiosity about a paintbrush lying in the barn was the spark that lit the artistic flame in Pigcasso.

We honour her memory, her achievements, her resilience through chronic pain, and her legacy.

"That'll do pig, that'll do."

Mikhail was available 24/7 for all kinds of problems we could have, but fortunately we had no problems at all.

I've no words to describe the wonderfulness of the experiences we had with Travel African Time.

The Pangolin is a rare and fascinating animal. Here are 10 interesting facts about this endangered species:

- Pangolins are the only mammals covered in scales, made of keratin - the same stuff as your fingernails!
- Their name comes from the Malay word "pengguling," meaning "roller", because they curl up in a ball when threatened. ️
- They are insectivores. Using their super long sticky tongues, a single pangolin can eat up to 70 million insects a year!
- Pangolins don't have teeth. They swallow small stones and grains of sand to help break down their food in their stomachs.
- There are 8 pangolin species, 4 in Africa and 4 in Asia. All 8 species are critically endangered.
- Their sharp scales protect them from natural predators, but sadly, they're the most trafficked mammal in the world.
- Pangolin babies are called Pangopups, and the first few weeks of their lives are spent riding around on their mother's tail.
- They have poor eyesight and hearing, but an incredible sense of smell to find their tasty meals.
- Despite their tough exterior, pangolins are highly sensitive and stress easily, making captive care challenging.
- You can help! Support pangolin conservation efforts to ensure these unique creatures don't disappear.

📝 Did You Know?

The famous Big Five each have a quirky namesake in a much smaller creature. To check these off your safari list, your best bet would be to take a walk through the bush! Today we conclude our discovery of "The Little Five".

#5 The Ant Lion

- Known for the predatory behaviour of their larvae, the suffix "lion" in its name suggests "destroyer" or "hunter".

- Ant lions undergo complete metamorphosis, consisting of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is particularly interesting, as it is the active, predatory phase.

- Ant lion larvae are often called "doodlebugs" because of the spiral or doodle-like pits they create in sandy or loose soil. They dig these pits to trap ants and other small insects.

- The ant lion larva waits at the bottom of its pit, buried with only its jaws exposed. When an ant or other prey item slips on the loose soil, the ant lion uses quick and precise movements to toss sand or debris, causing the prey to fall into its jaws.

- Ant lion larvae have specialized jaws that can inject venom into their prey. They then use suction to draw out the bodily fluids of their victims.

- The larval stage is the longest part of the ant lion's life cycle, lasting several months to a few years. In contrast, the adult stage is relatively short-lived, usually lasting only a few weeks.

- Ant lions in their adult form, also called antlion lacewings, have delicate, lacy wings and are often nocturnal. They feed on nectar and pollen, playing a beneficial role in pollination.

- Ant lions are found worldwide, but different species may have specific habitat preferences. They are commonly found in sandy or loose soil environments.

- Some ant lion species exhibit a behavior known as "myrmecophily," where the larvae invade ant colonies and feed on ant larvae without harming the adult ants. This is a form of social parasitism.

#4 The Buffalo Weaver

- There are two species of Buffalo Weaver: The Red-billed Buffalo Weaver and the White-billed Buffalo Weaver.

- Buffalo Weavers are highly social birds and live in colonies that consist of multiple breeding pairs.

- These birds are known for their enormous, messy, yet intricate communal nests made from thorny twigs. Each nest is made up of compartments, which houses multiple egg chambers.

- Buffalo Weavers have a varied diet, feeding on insects, seeds, and fruits. Their adaptability contributes to their widespread distribution.

- These birds are native to the savannas and grasslands of Africa, and have adapted to prefer areas where humans and livestock are present.

- The Buffalo Weaver as a species is thriving, and is currently regarded as under no threat in terms of conservation.

#3 The Leopard Tortoise 🐢

- Leopard Tortoises have stunning and unique shell patterns that resemble the spots of a leopard, hence their name.

- Among the largest tortoise species in the world, Leopard Tortoises can reach lengths of up to 2 feet (60 cm) and can weigh as much as 100 pounds (45 kg).

- These tortoises are herbivores, enjoying a diet rich in grasses and plants. They also play a vital role in the dispersion of plant seeds.

- The leopard tortoise may live as long as 80 to 100 years.

- These tortoises are cold-blooded, and normally active during the day. They are less active during hot weather or during the dry season.

- The leopard tortoise occupies the most varied habitats of any African tortoise, including grasslands, thorn-scrub, mesic brushland, and savannas.

- They are increasingly being bred in captivity for the pet trade through special programmes that help alleviate collection from the wild. This helps in conserving these wonderful creatures for generations to come.

#2 The Rhino Beetle

- Just like their namesake, male rhinoceros beetles have a characteristic horn on their head. This horn can vary in size and shape depending on the species.
- The rhinoceros beetle is one of the largest beetles in the world. Males can grow up to 6 inches (15 centimeters) long.
- Relative to their size, rhinoceros beetles are incredibly strong. They can carry objects up to 850 times their own body weight, which is equivalent to a human lifting about nine fully grown elephants!
- Despite their clunky appearance and thick armour, rhino beetles can fly. They are, however, not very good at it - as is typical of all beetles.
- Rhinoceros beetles can be found not only in Africa, but also in Asia, and the Americas. Different species have adapted to different climates and habitats, ranging from rainforests to grasslands.
- Male rhinoceros beetles engage in dramatic battles to win the attention of females. They use their horns to wrestle and push each other, trying to flip their opponents over.
- In some cultures, rhinoceros beetles are considered symbols of strength and power. They are sometimes kept as pets or used in traditional gambling fights.
- Like many other insect species, rhinoceros beetles face threats from habitat loss, deforestation, and climate change. Conservation efforts are important to protect these fascinating creatures and their ecosystems.

Nr 1 - The Elephant Shrew.

- The elephant shrew isn't actually a shrew and has no connection to elephants! Its name comes from the long, flexible snout resembling an elephant's trunk.
- Swift and agile, these creatures speed through grasslands and forests, and are very rarely seen.
- Their unique proboscis (snout) helps them hunt for insects in the leaf litter.
- Some species are monogamous, forming long-term pairs, and both parents actively raise their offspring. - With their unusual reproductive system, it is hard to tell male and female shrews apart. Nature's quirks at their finest!
