Join us on tomorrow night for PART 2 of "The Seven Cosmic Alignments Of 1977", presented by Warrick Sony.
Emerging from a sound/video art exhibition that the composer and producer (and creator of the Kalahari Surfers) presented as part of his 2022 Radio Art Residency at Bauhaus University, Warrick muses on 7 randomly aligned events that occurred in 1977, the year that Voyager spacecraft departed earth with its “Golden Record” strapped to the front of its chassis.
Curated by Carl Sagan, it was this “interstellar playlist” - an LP of music and sounds from Earth - that prompted the music theorists Alexander Rehding and Daniel K.L. Chua to pronounce 1977 “the most important year in human history…”
Sony takes us on a philosophical jaunt through the interconnectivity binding music, poetry, sound and art into what Osip Mandelstam called “the noise of time” ... While Part 1 was an overview of the ramifications of each of these seven aligned events, Part 2 will now dig a bit deeper into certain events, particularly around the month of August when Earth not only received a unique communique from outer space, but sent out two of our own—which are still active.
Despite what appeared to be immensely irreconcilable problems amongst ourselves (a nuclear missile contest and conflicts raging in more than 10 countries), 70s arts and politics were inextricably intertwined with funk, punk, dub, disco, reggae and space rock.
A no ignorance he do it
A no brute force do it
Your weapons can't do it
So hear this !
Throw down your arms and come
Drop them
Put them away

We invite you to join us for Part 2 at 8pm on Thursday 24 November when Prof MacKenny takes us deeper into the current psyche as captured by the 2022 Venice Biennale’s 213 artists from 58 countries.
Dinner menu R150. A Witches Cradle R170. Book the latter through Quicket; meals payable at DPC. Seating limited to 50.
Join us on a trip through the Venice Biennale 2022 – ‘Milk of Dreams’ – with a drink in hand, and Virginia MacKenny, Associate Professor of Painting, UCT Michaelis School of Fine Art, at the helm.
On 15 Nov at 8pm Virginia will offer PART 1, a 2-hour presentation entitled ‘A Witch’s Cradle - 100 years of feminist production’ - a ride through this year’s Biennale and the vision of curator Cecilia Alemani who chose 213 artists from 58 countries to capture the moment in history when the very survival of the species felt most threatened, as well as expanded modes of coexistence.
For Prof MacKenny the Venice Biennale experience was one ‘full of story-telling and world imagining. Dominated by the body: s*x and visceral entanglements, corporeal excesses, madness and abjection, accompanied by witches, mediums and ‘hysterics’ conjuring trances and altered states. Soaring creatures from ethereal realms, earth beings, peat and humus and soil, dirty fingers and ragged minds, incarcerations and freedoms of many kinds churn together. The abject and the beautiful, the brutal and blunt, the violent and bloody, the fragile and delicate, the ephemeral and light of touch. This biennale has its roots well beyond the ambit of Europe, but also finds its home there. Can get one all shook up, but also settles the being…’
(PART 2 will take place at 24 Nov at 8pm. It is not necessary to book Part 1 to enjoy Part 2 or vice versa)
Booking through https://www.quicket.co.za/events/197033-venice-biennale-2022-the-milk-of-dreams-presented-by-virginia-mackenny-part-i/ R170; see you at DPC for a most edifying evening 🙌🏽
