๐ŸŒณ Nature's Resilience ๐ŸŒณ

One thing in life that never fails to amaze is the incredible difference it makes when trees are stripped of plastic dressing from floods in years gone by.

Seeing these majestic giants breathe freely again, unburdened by the remnants of past disasters, is a powerful reminder of nature's resilience and our role in protecting it.

With gratitude to our team is able to continue to clean, restore, and cherish our environment.

Every action counts! ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒ

๐ŸŒŸ Heartfelt Gratitude and Joy ๐ŸŒŸ

Today was a day filled with blessings and emotions as we delivered a generous donation from the Gymnastics Club the Sthembile Early Childhood Development Centre in .

As a former gymnast, it was incredibly moving to witness the impact of this generosity.

When I opened my car and showed the Principal what we had brought, her eyes filled with tears of gratitude. She had been praying for this moment, and we were fortunate enough to deliver abundance to her crรจche. The joy on the faces of the children and teachers was palpable, and I was delighted to share free hugs with everyone!

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Centurion Gymnastics Club, and the parents of the gymnasts who donated so selflessly.. This Club played a significant role in shaping my life. I wouldnโ€™t be where I am today without the invaluable lessons learned through gymnastics.

Gymnastics is both an individual and team sport, imparting crucial life skills such as discipline, respect, toughness, perseverance, determination, balance, consistency, tenacity, nutrition, endurance, dedication, trust, and teamwork! It teaches us to take responsibility for our goals, work through pain, and build strength, hard work, and patience. It helps us face our fears and stay positive, focused, and committed! (Just the fact that my coach Gerhard Ferreira is still running the club is testament to the truth of this commitment!)

A huge thank you to Councillor Tembeni Thabatha for joining us and guiding us to the areas in need within your ward. And to Monica Coetzeefor accompanying Learnmore Chauke and myself, and please know that I honour you for all the amazing work that you do through OUTsurance within the community.

I feel blessed to be a channel through which love flows. ๐Ÿ’– I just love watching them dancing for joy as we drove away - its pure magic!

We will return to the community with donations for older children soon!

I'll always climb trees; the child in me will never let go.

This morning's visit to the Hennops riverbanks was heartbreaking. I witnessed what looked like a butchery of trees, a mass culling...

Indigenous trees, huge trees, hacked to the ground in a completely heartless way.

๐ŸŒ Can you believe it? We're still discarding items from 1988... and it's 2024!

36 years later, we've found a death certificate for a doggie called "Jingle Bell" from a in the , recently illegally dumped in , , City of Tshwane ..

How much waste have you accumulated over the past 36 years, if you have even been alive for that long! ๐Ÿซฃ

Time to rethink our consumption and waste habits for a sustainable future.

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿšฎ South Africa: Where trash takes a vacation! ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ’”

Illegal dumping is the ultimate party crasher for our pure elements. Earth? Smothered. Water? Contaminated. Air? Tainted. Even fire isn't safe from this pollution parade! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Sadly, this pollution doesn't stop there. It seeps into our lives, polluting our bodies, minds, and even our blood.

Let's clean up our act before we all become trashy humans! ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿง ๐Ÿฉธ

"So, Tarryn, what do you do for fun?"

Me: "I take crazy pictures with trash and sewage to emphasize the level of insanity that prevails in humanity! Trying to make it more REAL for people, because we ARE a serious problem!"

When you work with Waste, you learn a LOT! And it's absolutely imperative to have a sense of humour..

We would hugely appreciate your support to clean up this mess and protect our environment, and minimize the potential flooding under the bridge..

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿงน **Community Alert: Massive Illegal Dumping Cleanup in Irene!** ๐Ÿงน๐ŸŒ

We're appalled to discover an astonishing array of items dumped in the Irene stormwater channel, near the railway bridge, which is well known for flooding: tires, pool filters, a canoeing oar, a chevron board, clothing, golf clubs, plumbing supplies... you name it, it's there. Even the blinking kitchen sink!

This behavior is shocking and unacceptable. It's as if someone's home has been tossed out in the open. Perhaps stolen items? Please let us know if you recognize anything here ๐Ÿ™

This is not going to be easy, a huge amount of this stuff can simply not fit into bags, so we don't know how to responsibly dispose of this..

We would hugely appreciate your support to clean up this mess and protect our environment, and minimize the potential flooding under the bridge..

SIES!

In the beautiful village of Irene, is where we will be working today..

This horrendous behaviour where illegal dumping is so everyday norms, must really shift..

This was brought to our attention by a resident, and it is in a stormwater channel beneath the train bridge, well known for flooding during the rainy season..

Joining the dots, it's completely understandable but UNACCEPTABLE!

Who in their right mind thinks this is OK?

So many words running through my head right now, and I'd probably be put in a social media jail if I typed them out..

grrrrrr Shame on whoever did this!

Huge thanks to Jacendra Naidoo and Greyling Clothes to Good for including us in the St David's Boys camp activities ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Our ultimate goal in this area is to create wetlands from the stagnant ponds, which only receive water when it rains. The plan is to use the silt/sand from the lake desiltation to minimize transport costs for the City of Tshwane to take it to Holfontein and to partially close up the ponds to create a filter for the dirty water coming down the river.

We aim to filter the water on entry with floating wetlands in partnership with UJ PEETS and complete closure and wetland creationbon the downstream pond, ensuring that when the water re-enters the Hennops, it's triple filtered ๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿฉต

๐ŸŒ Citizen Science Water Quality Testing at Hartbeespoort Dam ๐ŸŸ

On 8 June, from 09:37 to 10:27, I decided to take my daughter to conduct citizen science water quality testing at Hartbeespoort Dam.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to engage the community in environmental monitoring and stewardship. The following results were recorded:

- Temperature: 16ยฐC
- Dissolved Oxygen: 0 mg/L
- Nitrates: 5 ppm
- pH: 7
- Phosphates: 2 ppm
- Turbidity: 40 JTU
- Coliforms: results to come

Analysis and Implications

Dissolved Oxygen (0 mg/L): The absence of dissolved oxygen is alarming, as it indicates hypoxic conditions. This could be detrimental to aquatic life, leading to fish kills and other ecological imbalances.

Nitrates (5 ppm): Elevated nitrate levels can lead to eutrophication, promoting excessive algal growth that depletes oxygen in the water. This further exacerbates the hypoxic conditions.

pH (7): A pH of 7 is neutral and generally suitable for most aquatic organisms. However, it must be considered alongside other parameters to fully understand the water quality.

Phosphates (2 ppm): High phosphate levels also contribute to eutrophication. Combined with the high nitrate levels, this suggests nutrient pollution, likely from agricultural runoff or wastewater discharge.

Turbidity (40 JTU): Increased turbidity indicates higher levels of suspended particles, which can affect aquatic life and reduce water quality. It can also hinder photosynthesis in aquatic plants by blocking sunlight.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Community Involvement and Action

The citizen science initiative at Hartbeespoort Dam highlights the critical role that community members can play in monitoring and protecting local water bodies.

By participating in regular water quality testing, citizens can help identify pollution sources, track changes over time, and advocate for necessary interventions.

Citizen science empowers communities to take an active role in environmental conservation, ensuring that Hartbeespoort Dam remains a valuable resource for both people and wildlife.

๐ŸŒ World Environment Day Cleanup! ๐ŸŒ

As the elements tested our commitment, boasting icicles and below zero temperatures, We SHOWED UP and do what it takes to make the world and our environment a better place for everyone!

We went to clean up at the Irene Country Club forests, joined by volunteers from Adcock Ingram, Standard Chartered and community members.

Together, we removed 263 bags of waste! The waste was draped over branches and tangled between trees, some of which were uprooted and washed down during the rainy season.

Thank you so much for participating in this amazing Cleanup and for all the hard work, you all rock! And thank you to Irene Country Club for sponsoring drinking water for us all ๐Ÿ™๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŒฟ Citizen Science in Action: MiniSASS River Quality Monitoring with Olievenhoutbosch Community ๐ŸŒฟ

Part 3

Sharing the results of our recent Citizen Science MiniSASS River Quality Monitoring with the amazing ladies from the Olievenhoutbosch community! Together, we continued on an exciting and interesting journey to assess the health of our local River.

Our Testing Site:
1. Rietspruit River

What We Did:
Using the MiniSASS tool, we tested water quality at one site, sadly the tributary was far too contaminated, and we would not have found much life in the tributary, however, in the Rietspruit we were amazed at how MANY small aquatic organisms we found that indicate the health of the river. This hands-on approach not only provided valuable data but also empowered the community with knowledge about their natural resources.

Key Findings:
- Rietspruit River: The biodiversity found here were:
Worms, Leeches, Crabs, Mayflies, Damselflies, Bugs & Beetles, Caddiesflies, True Flies, Snails

Total Score: 39
Number of Groups: 9
miniSASS Score: 43

(I personally saw a dragonfly, but that was not while conducting the test) So although the number of organisms we found was relatively high, sadly the score was not indicative of good water quality.

Why This Matters:
MiniSASS, a simplified version of the South African Scoring System (SASS), is an incredible tool for assessing river health and water quality. Hereโ€™s why it matters so much, especially for communities like Olievenhoutbosch:

1. Empowering Community Members
Accessibility: MiniSASS is designed to be used by ordinary citizens, it doesnโ€™t require specialized training, making it accessible to everyone.

2. Simple and Effective Monitoring
Easy to Use: MiniSASS involves collecting and identifying small aquatic organisms (macroinvertebrates) found in rivers and streams.

Cost-Effective: MiniSASS provides a low-cost alternative for regular water quality monitoring.

Real-Time Data: It allows for immediate assessment of water quality, enabling quick responses to potential pollution issues.

3. Environmental Protection
Early Detection: Regular monitoring with MiniSASS helps in early detection of pollution or changes in water quality, allowing for timely intervention.

Biodiversity: Understanding the health of aquatic ecosystems helps in preserving biodiversity, as the presence of various macroinvertebrates reflects the overall health of the river.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated and made this project possible. Letโ€™s continue to protect and cherish our precious water resources. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’ง

๐ŸŒฟ Citizen Science in Action: Water Quality Testing with Olievenhoutbosch Community ๐ŸŒฟ

Part 2

We're excited to share the highlights of our recent Citizen Science Water Quality Testing project with the inspiring ladies from the Olievenhoutbosch community! Together, we embarked on an educational and impactful journey to assess the health of our local water bodies.

Our Testing Sites:
1. Rietspruit River
2. A Local Tributary

What We Did:
Basic Water Quality Testing using citizen science to test the following parameters: pH, temperature, turbidity, Oxygen, phosphates, nitrates and coliforms

Results:
- Rietspruit
Temperature: 20 degrees Celcius
pH: 8
Turbidity: 40 JTU
Nitrates: 5 ppm
Phosphates: 1ppm
Oxygen: 4ppm / 44%
Coliforms: Positive

- Tributary:
Temperature: 18 degrees Celcius
pH: 8
Turbidity: 100 JTU
Nitrates: 5ppm
Phosphates: 2ppm
Oxygen: 4ppm / 42%
Coliforms: Positive

Community Impact:
- Education: Participants learned about the water cycle, sources of pollution, and simple methods to purify and conserve water.

- Empowerment: The ladies of Olievenhoutbosch are now equipped with the knowledge to monitor their water resources and advocate for cleaner environments. Open lines of communication with Authorities to report illegal activities, or spills, changes in the River/s

- Action: We identified key areas for improvement and are committed to ongoing testing and community-driven conservation efforts.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated and made this project possible. Letโ€™s continue to protect and cherish our precious water resources. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’ง
