Does Monday have you feeling like a zombie? 🧟♂️. Come get an adjustment to turn life back on in that "dead" body!
The last in our series of backpack tips is the ergonomic and health factors to consider when selecting a backpack:
1. Be mindful of your posture while wearing a backpack. Stand up straight. If you must pick up a heavier backpack daily, remember to bend from your knees and use your legs to pick the bag up.
2. If you’re carrying a heavy load regularly, consider exercising to strengthen your back and shoulders. Your CASA-registered chiropractor can advise on specifics here.
3. Ensure that the shoulder straps are adjusted to fit snugly on your shoulders. The bottom of the backpack should rest in the curve of your lower back and the straps should not be hung on one shoulder.
4. If your backpack has hip straps, use them to distribute the weight more evenly and reduce strain on your shoulders. Better yet, consider buying a new backpack with hip straps to assist in even weight distribution.

It’s almost back to school!
Let’s unpack a checklist on how to select the correct backpack for your needs:
1. Firstly, consider the purpose for which the backpack is intended.
Different activities may require different types of backpacks (e.g. daypack, laptop backpack, hiking backpack).
2. Consider the size of the backpack based on your needs. A smaller, compact backpack may be suitable for daily commuting, while a larger one may be needed for sports equipment or a laptop and heavy textbooks.
3. Ensure the backpack is comfortable to wear. Look for padded shoulder straps, a padded back, and possibly a hip belt for distributing weight evenly.
4. Opt for a backpack with multiple compartments for better organisation and even weight distribution.

In keeping with the back-to-school, backpack theme, let’s consider
the best ways to pack your backpack for healthier ergonomics.
1. Place heavier items at the bottom of the backpack and lighter
items towards the top. This helps maintain balance and makes it
easier to wear the backpack.
2. If your backpack has a laptop compartment, use it.
3. Pack essential items like keys, wallet, and phone in easily accessible pockets or right at the top of the backpack for quick retrieval.

Interesting fact:
The very first vertebra in the neck is called the Atlas. It is named after the mythological Greek God who was known for carrying the weight of the world on his shoulder, exactly how the atlas bone carries the weight of the skull at the top of your neck.
Exercises and stretches to relieve sciatica
It’s nearly back to school and back to reality!
As our children head back in the coming weeks, remember to minimise the risk of injury to their backs.
From poorly fitted shoes, to overloaded backpacks we need to consider all aspects for a happy, pain-free child to thrive. Here are CASA’s top tips for better workstation ergonomics for your child:
- Consider setting up an ergonomically designed workstation for your child. Try ensure that their feet touch the floor and that their back is in contact with the chair at all times.
- Ensure your child is not sitting on the couch or lying in bed while doing homework. These odd positions place additional undue strain on their developing spines.
- Reduce the glare on any electronic devices to ensure your child is not constantly repositioning their neck to get a better view of the screen.
- If your child is experiencing any pain, then it is important to contact your CASA-registered chiropractor for a full evaluation and treatment plan: https://membership.chiropractic.co.za/Public/Index #/findAChiropractor
