Effective design makes for happy people.

What makes a piece multi-functional? We aim to make pieces that can live and be used in multiple spaces, for instance a stool or lamp can become a bedside table, or a towel rail can become a spice rack etc. The simpler things are, the more applications they can adjust to, which allows the curator the opportunity to put their stamp on their space based on how they choose to apply the product.

12/10/2022

Throwback to 2017, the excitement was real.

A N T I D O T E had just been launched and was picked up by the curators of Design JHB that year. It was such a privilege to exhibit alongside some of the rockstars of South African Design and we count ourselves very lucky to still be part of in this diverse, talented community.

Seen here, Gareth is sitting on the 'Privacy Chair' that was submitted for the Design Darlings that year.

All towel rails are created equal (just not in length 😜)

What does this mean exactly?A great for a consistent look, all while meeting your versatile requirements.

Which colour or length would be a good fit for you?

The SHOWER SHELF, probably the most popular piece in the collection, although the TOILET ROLL HOLDER is always there jostling for pole position.

The aim of the design is for it to be as non intrusive as possible while still being useful. It is really just a thin surface on which to put the shower essentials. Takes up no volume, but still does the job.

The screw holes have also been intentionally positioned so that it is easy to mount the shelf along a grout line in the shower which limits the risk of cracking tiles.

What are some of the things you consider when shopping for a shower shelf?

One of our core values is creating pieces that have function and aesthetic. It is important to us that our pieces can fulfil multiple purposes in your home- no matter the room.

See our single towel rail double as a kitchen accessory that will be welcomed with open arms into any busy kitchen. Complete with hooks to free up your precious counter space and a shelf to keep your essentials close to hand, now all you have to focus on is perfecting that complicated bao bun recipe.

💬 👉Can you name another function or place for this shelf accessory?

There are 2 toilet roll holders in our range. The first one you see here was designed for a compact space, a guest loo for instance. Where space is a luxury and many pieces have to do double duty, either as a towel rail or as a magazine holder.

The second was the OG, for a family bathroom where there would be more than one accessory.

We designed them because we wanted something other than what was currently available...which we found quite obvious and mundane. we weren't looking to reinvent the wheel, but maybe just a new hubcap.

We have some ideas for hubcaps too 😉

This was the product that launched a furniture range way back in 2016. Originally designed for a Head Office, we broke down the requirements of a barstool and tried to address them individually:

✅ It needs a footrest otherwise most peoples legs go numb.
✅ The footrest cannot look like an add on.
✅ It needs to be stable. 3 legs are more stable than 4. This way all the legs will always be in contact with the ground, whereas 4 can have the tendency to rock.

If simplicity was a desk it would be the S H E L T E R

It has a graphic quality that is neither dramatic nor obvious, but we sure do find it satisfying.

The BARCODE LIGHT can be hung from the top or the bottom and when multiple are hung in a line the pendants visually create a barcode.

The 'GUT PUNCH LAMP' is designed as a bedside lamp that provides the solution for a crowded bedside table.

Bedside tables have a lot on their plate. As a space where things like alarm clocks, phones, books, magazines, reading glasses etc. are kept, it's often that the equally essential lamp occupies too much valuable real estate.

Where did the 💡 HALO LAMP come from? These notes show what we were thinking.

Our main design considerations for each piece are based on:

1. How and where the piece is going to be used.

2. How we can express variations in materials, size, shape or form.

On our ‘less is more’ journey our pieces need to be both useful and timeless in design. We aim for versatility and adaptability, which can be solved practically or visually.

The CAPSULE TABLE, named after the pill shape table top and how that fit in with our namesake A N T I D O T E.

Paired back to the essentials for a side table. During our concept phase we asked questions like, "How many legs does a table actually need?" "How do we still bring interest in to the piece with materials and details?" "Is it different enough, but not alienating?"

Hopefully we answered some of those questions.

One is a minimalist product, the other a dramatic landscape. Both exhibit similarities in colour, yet produce such different things. We find that fascinating.

L M V D R - one of the fathers of minimalism, famous for this quote.

This product started from a doodle, just me scratching around on a piece of paper while on the phone to someone. Allowing my brain space to process things and it kept going until there was a product, in kind of a subconscious way.

Sometimes I find the best product comes from these kind of places. Sometimes you have to move the unconscious creation intentionally in to product. Sometimes it just happens. I have had to learn to let both types of design be part of the process.

Antidote by GIH Studio

Borne out of GIH Studio when a business approached them to redo their office space, including some furniture design.
The idea for designing more furniture was sparked and ‘Furniture by GIH Studio’ was launched to the public.
Now it’s time to give the furniture brand its own individual space and after much planning, we’ve created Antidote.

Inspired by the need to counteract the current furniture market offering in South Africa, Antidote aims to be the brand that offers people a specific aesthetic, that’s made in South Africa. Our furniture range is designed to be an addition to your spaces - one that delivers on a certain demand for the look and feel of expensive furniture, but that's cost effective and local.

Minimalist simplicity for maximum impact.
