The staff of Greenbury Secondary School mourns the tragic loss of one of our own, Mr Neil Ranganathan, Department Head of Social Sciences. His untimely death comes as a devastating blow to both our school and the teaching fraternity at large.

Neil was a stalwart of Greenbury Secondary, having dedicated over 30 years to the pupils and community of Phoenix. He was a passionate, proficient and much-loved educator who gave of his best, often sacrificing weekends to impart his expertise to his beloved students. This diligence bore fruit and his successes at Greenbury are well-documented.

An ardent sportsman, Neil excelled at soccer and achieved notable success provincially and nationally. His warm, engaging personality endeared him to all whose lives he touched. Indeed, his charismatic presence and infectious laugh were guaranteed to brighten one's day. As a treasured colleague, Neil's story cannot be encapsulated in a single narrative. Spontaneous, witty and magnanimous, Neil was a radiant Light at our school, spreading his positivity and love to everyone who was fortunate enough to be in his orbit. Neil's loss is heartfelt as he was an irreplaceable member of our Greenbury family. We will miss him dearly and we take comfort knowing that his spirit is free and his soul is at rest.

TRIBUTE: MR HEMRAJ ‘PREM’ RAMNARAIN
( 9 JULY 1956 – 15 APRIL 2024 )
EX-PRINCIPAL – GREENBURY SECONDARY
Written by Mr Kinx Nundkumar

Superlatives are but mere diluted shadows to describe the magnificent light that shared its luminosity, love, blessings and glory with us in the form of Mr Hemraj ‘Prem’ Ramnarain, an exalted and inspirational leader and human being, at the helm of one of Phoenix’s and Kwa-Zulu Natal’s most prestigious academic schools, Greenbury Secondary.
While paying homage to this metaphorical rock of our Phoenix community, Prem Ramnarain, we are reminded about how greatness is conveyed by the eminent Bard, William Shakespeare, who described GREATNESS in these lofty words: “Some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them.”
In Mr Ramnarain’s case, he was not born great but achieved greatness which was thrust upon him by dint of his magnanimous and unrelenting spirit and commitment to teaching his favourite subject, Accounting, and his whole-hearted, wider and selfless commitment to Greenbury Secondary - a distinguished institution of academic and sporting excellence.
Prem, as he was fondly known to all his family and friends, was born on 9 July 1956 to poor parents. His late mum was a home executive while his late father toiled for the Sugar Mill in Mt Edgecombe, earning a meagre salary to fend for a family of seven. In spite of all the socio-economic hardships and obstacles faced by the Ramnarain family, it was in Prem Ramnarain’s DNA, from his pre-teen years, to labour assiduously and with tremendous fortitude in his academic education in order to extricate himself from the quagmire of poverty that blighted the Indian community in the 1960s and 70s. His steely determination to succeed at the highest level, at such a young age, was a testament to and a harbinger of the pivotal triumph in his later life when, from an HOD of Commerce at Umzinto Secondary and Greenbury Secondary, he was catapulted straight into the challenging and daunting position of Head Master at Greenbury Secondary.
Oftentimes, a person’s destiny is written in their stars and Prem’s ascendancy to his position as Principal had all the hallmarks of the bountiful blessings of the universe. As a teacher, he was beyond reproach and a man who was par excellence in the cognitive field of his domain of study. The thousands of eager Accounting-fed students who passed through his hands and via the portals of Greenbury Secondary is a befitting testimony to the legacy that this wonderful man, colleague, mentor, teacher, husband, father, friend, principal and awesome human being leaves behind for us to savour for as long as Greenbury Secondary exists. For those of us who knew, respected and loved Prem, we can all proudly chorus in unison: “We knew such a one who gave his heart and soul to his pupils, his community and to his school and craved nothing in return. He was truly a man!”
As a colleague, Mr Ramnarain stood firmly on the bedrock of his principles and refused to shy away from or buckle under pressure from any quarter. His motto: ‘Our children come first’ was his clarion call to the educators who had the honour of serving under his leadership. On the outside, he was firm, resolute and a virtually impregnable fort, but to those of us who knew him, in our personal interactions with him, he was like a father-figure who cared deeply for his colleagues and students. Simply put, Prem was really like a marsh mellow – alliteratively succulent, soft and sweet on the inside.
As we bid a final and eternal farewell to one of our very own – MR GREENBURY – let us ponder over John Donne’s sublime perspective on death in his poetic master piece, DEATH BE NOT PROUD:
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery…
One short sleep past, we wake eternally
And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.

Go gently into that sweet night, MR HEMRAJ PREM RAMNARAIN.
We will always love you!!!

South Africa was included in the 12 nation U18 Commonwealth Youth Games Beach Volleyball Championship. South Africa is one of three African countries to participate in the event. The beach volleyball championship is scheduled to take place at Pigeon Point Beach Facility on the island of Tobago in the West Indies from 4-11 August 2023.

Greenbury Secondary's *Deloshen Valaithum* will represent South Africa in this prestigious event. At the tender age of sixteen (16) Deloshen represented South Africa in three (3) international beach volleyball championships: In 2022 Deloshen partnered with Heiko Guther from Gauteng for the U19 World Championship in Turkey. Once again Deloshen was called upon, amongst others, to represent South Africa in the World Elite 16 Beach Volleyball Championship in Cape Town in November 2022. The Elite 16 caters for the world’s best senior players many of whom make a living by playing beach volleyball on a full-time basis on the FIVB Beach Volleyball Circuit. Thando Ngobese from KZN was Deloshen’s partner in the Cape Town event.

In 2023 Deloshen teamed up with Limpopo’s Kemo Macks Otsweleng as one of South Africa’s representatives in the Zone V1 Beach Tour in Durban.

Over the past two years, Deloshen Valaitham’s explosive performance on the beach volleyball courts ‘’earned’’ him the title of the number one beach volleyball player in the youth category in South Africa. Emerging from a volleyball playing family, it came as no surprise when the youngster quickly took to the game. Coached by his dad, Rowan from the age of four (4) Deloshen rose to becoming the most feared attacker in the indoor and beach volleyball format of the game in the youth and senior categories. His trade mark scorching power service strikes fear in the hearts of his opponents.

Deloshen will depart for the Commonwealth Youth Games in the West Indies on Friday, 28 July and return on 14 August.

Greenbury Secondary School wishes Deloshen all the best and we are so proud of his achievements.

MR SEELAN PARSURAMEN (EX-GREENBURY SECONDARY PHYSICAL SCIENCE EDUCATOR)

Another star in the Greenbury Secondary firmament has disappeared …

Mr S. Parsuramen, fondly known as Seelan, joined the Science Department at Greenbury Secondary School in 1989 as a Physical Science educator, and for the next twenty years, till he retired at Greenbury Secondary at the age of 65, he continued extracting the best out of the numerous Physical Science learners who were allotted to him.

He was a no-nonsense disciplinarian and even among his colleagues, on the staff, he was highly regarded for his acumen and logical thinking. As a physical science educator, Mr S. Parsuramen had the ability to develop his learners’ cognitive abilities to greater levels. He demanded a high level of work ethic from his learners and ensured his own level of work ethic was commensurate with what he expected from his learners.

For some people, Mr S. Parsuramen seemed an enigma whose outlook was, at times, eccentric but those who knew him perceived in him a humble and a kind-hearted being who had experienced highs and lows in his life which subsequently shaped his approach to life.

He was profoundly respected by his peers and learners for his knowledge of physics and chemistry. As a person, Mr S. Parsuramen had a fine sense of humour which he displayed to those whom he knew well. He was frank and often forthright in his views and a man clearly sculptured by the values and ethos of his generation.

Lest it be forgotten: Mr Seelan Parsuramen was one of the early pioneers of Greenbury Secondary who helped consolidate the foundations that led to the school’s successes and the recognition Greenbury Secondary attained as a powerful educational institution in the new millennium.

Gone, but not forgotten, SIR …

You have truly done Greenbury Secondary and the Phoenix community proud. May your divine soul rest peacefully as you continue your journey to your eternal home.
