We're getting the word out and would appreciate it if you helped us!

This year we are creating three intentional opportunities during our two-day convention to ensure that members of the community interact with each other and local service providers exhibiting around the topic of mental health. We call it Connect & Grow Pockets.

The hope is that all attendees of the convention, whether they represent the organisations exhibiting or vendors from the market or professional mental health practitioners or general public, will enjoy and participate in these pockets by spending the first 45 minutes in the main hall and then choosing to join one of the two relevant workshops that will be facilitated.

Have a look at what is in store for the afternoon Pocket on Saturday!

There is no better way to spend your Saturday.
This is the kind of event we get excited about.
This is the urgent SONA we should be talking about.

What is the state our country's mental health? Do all these problems we can do nothing about - loadshedding, crime, corruption etc - really affect us? And if so, how? How seriously does South Africa take mental health concerns? Have you heard of 'presenteeism'? What can we, local families, communities and business owners do about improving our mental health?

Join the wonderful UPside team and a few leading experts in the conversation.

We are so excited to be joining hands with Upside as they also put the important conversation of Mental Health on the table! This topic has so many layers and we are so pleased with the way this event supports the same narrative as the Community Mental Health Convention.

During Mental Wellness Month in October, Upside, a Cape Town-based community services non-profit, is hosting a seminar on Saturday, 7 October, on the state of South Africa's mental health and its impact on NGOs, education and the economy with:
● Prof Mario Smith, Psychologist and Professor at UWC.
● Prof Daniel Louw. Professor in Theology and Pastoral Care Univ. Stellenbosch and
● Anelia Coetzee, People and Strategy Development Expert

β€œThrough this seminar, we hope to promote stakeholder collaboration to prioritise mental wellness through preventative action. This can be achieved through capacity building of our community leaders, positive and informative messaging and facilitating an open discussion on mental health at home, school and the workplace,” said Upside Director Neal Bresler.

Join Upside in this important conversation on mental wellness to equip community leaders about mental health, its benefits, and available resources.

Ticket sales are limited, so take advantage of this opportunity to connect with and learn from Upside's experts.

Sharing food is one of the most powerful ways to be community!
It is around a good cup of coffee, a delicious burger or freshly baked pastries that we connect and share in our most authentic forms. It is in these spaces that we want to connect and share over mental health and the impact it is having on our community.

Come join us for our lovely local market that will include a whole range of food vendors, locally made products and other surprises.

Let's be community, let's change the narrative.

πŸ“£ Calling all local Food Vendors, Thrifters and Crafters to join our Community Market! πŸ“£

We would also love to have a variety of marketeers/entrepreneurs selling their handcraft / homemade / homegrown products, thrifting wares and fresh produce as part of our Convention market.

With our excellent location on the corner of Ou Kaapse Weg and Buller Louw Drive and right across from Longbeach Mall, where attendees and customers will be able to park, we are bound to attract many intentional visitors as well as the attention from traffic passing by.

On top of that you will have eager customers amongst the participants of the convention who will be buying meals and refreshments at the market between their activities inside.

This opportunity is yours for a once-off payment of R250.

This is a wonderful opportunity to support and align with an event that focuses on mental health care and the well-being of our community.

We are so excited about this year’s Community Mental Health Convention run in collaboration between Family Counselling Centre and Integer Network.

The core purpose of the event (as it was when first launched in 2022), is to bring together like-minded individuals and organisations who are already active in offering services addressing mental health challenges in the South Peninsula communities.

A secondary and very important focus of the event is raising awareness of and support for the work of Far South Counselling (FSC), an NPC and sister organization of TFCC, who is making professional mental health services more accessible to communities who generally have little to no access to it.

This year we are creating three intentional opportunities during our two-day convention to ensure that members of the community interact with each other and local service providers exhibiting around the topic of mental health. We call it Connect & Grow Pockets.

Each of these pockets will start with a performance by a local school/artist/band/performer. Some of the exhibitors (local service providers and organisations/NGO’s) will then have the opportunity to introduce their services to the audience. The public attending the convention will be invited to listen to a speaker and then attend one of two relevant workshops with a small entrance fee.
Each of our three pockets are built around a theme that supports the overall theme of Cultivating Hope.

On Friday afternoon the focus will be on the Mental Health challenges of our children and young people, Saturday morning we’ll look at the connection between our physical and mental well-being and in the afternoon, during our last pocket, attention will be given to the impact of trauma on the community.

The hope is that all attendees of the convention, whether they represent the organisations exhibiting or vendors from the market or professional mental health practitioners or general public, will enjoy and participate in these pockets by spending the first 45 minutes in the main hall and then choosing to join one of the two relevant workshops that will be facilitated.

β€œThe core of mental toughness is actually self-compassion,” Brown said. β€œPeople who are mentally tough stay mentally tough because they don’t slip easily into shame or self-criticism or self-loathing.”

Science has proven that when we do not feel like we are performing out best we spiral into a cycle of self-criticism that makes it emotionally impossible for us to learn from our mistakes. We get trapped.

Understanding that struggling with your mental health is not an exclusive club and that we all need support is a powerful first step towards a society that can break the spiral of self-criticism and move towards healthier humans who can learn and grow from the challenges that life presents.

β€œWhat makes us vulnerable makes us beautiful and our vulnerability is our primary source of strength and you don’t see that very often,” says Brown.

Come be part of the narrative that embraces this beautiful vulnerability of humanity.

Far South Counselling (FSC) is the sister organisation to The Family Counselling Centre (TFCC). Its vision to offer professional mental health services to those who have little to no access to mental health support.

FSC was born out of pro-bono services offered at TFCC since 2015 and officially as its own entity in 2022. Through our work with organisations like Valley Development Project, the local child protection unit; The Safe House Trust, the local Women’s Shelter for victims of gender-based violence and domestic abuse; local schools and Masicorp (an NGO providing quality education, training and support to the community of Masiphumelele), we have become increasingly aware of the immensity of mental health challenges in the surrounding communities.

Through raising awareness and support for FSC at the CMC23, we aim to increase our visibility and services across the Far South community with a specific focus in Ocean View, Redhill and Masiphumelele.

Being a part of the Convention this year is also a chance to be a part of the work that Far South Counselling aims to do. Help us take quality counselling care to everyone, regardless of their home address or financial situation.

β€œThere are so many community and mental health needs right here on our doorstep,” says Andrea Nettel (CEO, FSC). β€œLikewise, there are so many individuals and organisations who are both passionate about and able to respond to these needs and, in that, contribute to the well-being of the community. However, that is only ONE aspect of the convention. The other desire is for us to attract as many people as possible, from all the communities in the area, to see what services, opportunities and support structures exist for their benefit. By bringing all parties together, with a dedicated focus on discussing needs and available resources, our goal is to create a network for all to benefit from.”

This is the heart of the Community Mental Health Convention.
We would love for you to be a part of it.
