SAVF PROJECT HOPE REACH OUT TO SAVF DIE ANKER HOUSING SCHEME
SAVF National Office 001-446 NPO

The fire at SAVF Die Anker Housing Scheme on the 11th of July severely damaged a section of the two-story building that provided accommodation to 38 elderly people. Following the outbreak of the fire our first priority was the safety and wellbeing of the residents and staff.

After ensuring their physical safety, SAVF has been engaging closely with and providing emotional support to all residents and staff on a daily basis to determine their immediate needs due to loss during the fire. These include prescription glasses, hearing aids, blood-pressure monitors and cellphones.

SAVF CEO announced on Monday, 15 July 2024 that SAVF will utilise the SAVF Project Hope Fund to financially assist SAVF Die Anker Housing Scheme to replace these essential items for our residents.

SAVF Project Hope was established in 2021 to allow volunteers and employees of SAVF to stand together and make a difference by demonstrating the vision of the SAVF - giving hope to those around us who are in need. It is SAVF’s calling to make a difference in the heart and minds of people.

SAVF Die Anker facility has been overwhelmed with donations from organisations and community members, and we wish to extend our heartfelt thanks for your support.

As per request from donors we herewith provide the banking details for organisations who wish to reach out to SAVF Die Anker. Please include the following reference code: SAVF Anker, and should you wish to receive an 18A certificate, please forward your details on email to [email protected]

The cause of the incident remains unknown as forensic investigation has not been completed. SAVF is fully cooperating with the relevant authority to determine the cause of the fire.

SAVF DIE ANKER - HOUSING SCHEME FIRE - THANK YOU!

Dear SAVF friends, this week you helped us solve a crisis with grace and compassion. Where others might have ignored the issue in front of them, you instead chose to get involved and reach out to us.

Nelson Mandela once said, "There can be no greater gift than that of giving one's time and energy to helping others without expecting anything in return."

We are truly blessed with the donations that have been received for our residents affected.

For all donors who still wish to reach out - we will be doing a needs assessment with our residents and will then share the information on our social media platforms.

Thank you - we appreciate you.

FIRE AT SAVF DIE ANKER HOUSING SCHEME, GERMISTON, EKURHULENI

A blaze, which broke out on Thursday morning, destroyed a section of the two-story building in Germiston. The facility capacity is 50, but the current occupancy rate is 38.

Residents were guided out of the building by the fire-evacuation marshals to a premise across the street where medical staff could evaluate them before they were transferred to a nearby school where Gauteng Department of Social Development joined hands with SAVF staff to comfort the residents.

Ekurhuleni emergency services spokesperson William Ntladi said firefighters managed to prevent the blaze from engulfing the entire building. The cause of the blaze is unknown, and a police investigation has been launched as one resident succumbed during the fire.

SAVF National Office extend our sincere condolences to the deceased family and friends, and the other 37 residents affected by the fire. Four of these residents were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, of which only one of them was admitted for overnight observation.

SAVF with the support of Gauteng Department of Social Development, ensured the well-being of all affected residents and staff:

-Debriefing for beneficiaries and staff.
-Identification of alternative placement for beneficiaries.
-Provision of transport to the identified centres.
-Provision of support and guidance to the centre.

SAVF was able to accommodate all affected residents at nearby SAVF facilities and family and provide them with clothing, medical assistance and other basic needs.

Gauteng MEC Faith Mazibuko came to give support to survivors of the fire and the SAVF Executive Committee represented by SAVF CEO, SAVF Head Social Services and Head Marketing who were at the facility. She complimented SAVF Board members and staff on the professional way in which the situation has been handled and the cooperation with Gauteng Department of Social Development.

SAVF would like to thank all community members who assisted on the scene and have reached out to the facility manager for their support.
