Hey Salaams to Human of ATG
Cayleigh Bright & πβοΈ
Who are you, what do you do, and why did you start ?
Iβm a writer and the co-founder of : a writing studio working with language in all its forms. I run write and Letterhead almost exclusively from coffee shops, and while thinking about how I could bring the businessβs concept of βThe One-Stop Words Shopβ to life, I realised that little free libraries in public and semi-public places would be a win-win for all involved. With our shelves, visitors can take a book and leave a book β or take a book and pay what they can, when they can, via SnapScan, Zapper and Yoco. Weβve experimented successfully with pop-ups at festivals like , and , and Letterhead supports to raise awareness of their vital initiative to save Lovedale Press.
What do you love about books and your project?
Books hold different value for different people β education, creating empathy, and healthy βescapismβ or relaxation β and I feel strongly that these benefits should be universally accessible. Public libraries are invaluable, and with FAIR I want us to play our small role in expanding library use. Our shelves also give people a way to "practise" sharing surplus items: weβre socialised to believe that there's nothing for free, so it can feel uncomfortable lifting books off of shelves without paying for them. But why not give away what you no longer need, for others to enjoy?
What's your latest project that's getting you excited, and that you can't wait to have out in the world?
I've recently edited a childrenβs book: something new for me! Itβs going to be very exciting to see it out in the world.
If you had to describe ATG to a friend staying abroad ?
The ideal place to plan and start your explorations of my favourite city, with a unique view of its streets and people, great coffee, and Cape Town's famous koesisters.
If you could have a coffee with anyone ?
My mom! She's working overseas this year, and it's the longest we've been apart. She shares my love for trying new coffee shops and seeing creativity at work.

My name is Sara Bint Moneer Khan, and I'm an Arts Manager, Strategist, and Curator. I like to understand life through art and enjoy the energy that art permeates. I'm from London, but I have lived in Cape Town since 2015.
What do you love about coffee/cafe culture ?
The familiarity of it. You can go almost anywhere in the world and find a cafe of sorts with the same essence. I look for a cafe wherever I find myself, and it always makes sense to start, disrupt, or end my day in one.
What's your latest project you are working on? That's getting you excited, and you can't wait to have it out in the world?
I'm wrapping up my doctorate and hoping on a period of respite before some new projects for 2024
If you could have a coffee with anyone, who would it be?
My grandfather, who raised me for many years and passed on when I was 18. I'd catch up on the last 22 years and ask him if I could have one of his ci**rs too.
Hey Salaam & Happy Friday everyone π its the weekend π
WFC (Work from Cafe) is always a good idea.
Intro post to < Humans going ATG >
One thing we love about our cafe is that it attracts the most interesting and diverse group of individuals. If you ever wondered who that person is at table 3 or the person in front of you in the coffee queue.
This is the storytelling journal of those Humans, the Humans of ATG, we dubbed HUMANS Going Against the Grain. Cool hey ? We thought so too, mainly because it features some pretty cool humans. This is your introduction to the world beyond that random person at the cafe. I hope you enjoy this series - GA
Hey Salaam to human
" I'm Arnelle Booysen, I'm a multi-discipline creative who works with the coffee industry.
The thing about coffee and cafe culture that I love is how it brings people from any all walks of life together to share conversations and perspectives of life.
I'm currently working with fellow coffee lovers and creative to launch The Puck - the new South African voice of coffee. I am fortunate to have met these great humans through coffee and our love for the South African coffee scene and its people.
If i could have coffee with anyone, it would be My Ouma - to ask her if she enjoyed her life on earth before she left and beg her for her recipe for her sourdough bread. I still recall the smell of her kitchen β€οΈπ₯Ή "
Against the Grain with are featuring interesting humans in our cafe world. These humans are doing the most amazing things in a variety of industries and worlds. What unites us is a space like a cafe. Coffee shops are about community and how they attract an immensely diverse group of humans. This is a project/journal of those humans. βοΈπ±π
