Statement by the Coptic Orthodox Church regarding the Funeral Prayers in Cairo, Egypt for our beloved fathers

Concerning the arrangements for the funeral prayers of the Monks: Hegumen Takla El-Samuely, Father Mina Ava Markos, and Father Yostos Ava Markos, H.H. Pope Tawadros II will lead the funeral prayers in St. Mark's Cathedral in Abbasiya tomorrow morning (Tuesday) at ten o'clock in the morning.

The bodies will be transferred, after the Funeral Prayers, to the Monastery of Saint Samuel the Confessor in Mount Qalamoun, to complete their burial procedures there.

Today, three monks were subjected to a criminal attack in our Coptic monastery of Saint Mark the Apostle and Saint Samuel the Confessor in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The attack resulted in the martyrdom of the three monks:
-The Monk Hegumen Takla El-Samuely (deputy of the diocese of South Africa)
-The Monk Yostos Ava Markos
-The Monk Mina Ava Markos

The relevant agencies arrived at the monastery and began their investigations of the incident. The Egyptian ambassador in Johannesburg also went to the monastery to follow up the situation.

H.H. Pope Tawadros II is closely following all the details of this incident, waiting to be informed of its causes.

The Church expresses its deep anguish over the occurrence of such a tragic incident, extends its sincere condolences to the families of the three monks, and is full of confidence that only the merciful and just God is able to grant comfort and reveal the truth.

Happy Coptic New Year!

Today is a very special day as we are celebrating the Coptic New Year; famous for “Nayrouz” or “Nayrouz Feast” which means “the new year” in Persian language.
So, today is the first day in the New Coptic Year 1740 😊 – 1st of month of “Thout”.
Originally, the Coptic calendar was the calendar of the ancient Egyptian farmers, where the months are related to the seasons of farming and harvesting in Egypt.
When most Egypt became Christian, we considered the same months, the same calendar as our calendar. And we called it the Calendar of the Martyrs because the Coptic Church offered millions of martyrs throughout the history of the Egyptian Christian life. So, the year 284 AD marks the beginning of the Coptic calendar; a momentous year marred by a wave of persecution against Egyptian Christians who have offered their lives as a sacrifice for their faith.
So, on this special day, on “Nayrouz Feast”, we are celebrating and honoring the Solid Faith of our Coptic Church through its entire history, and its Martyrs who stood and confessed their faith in the Word of God with firmness and commitment and with the totality of their lives.
In this new year, may God grant us strong faith, true love, and a holy life that bears witness to Him.

"PALM SUNDAY | Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem, days before he was crucified.

Palm Sunday is known as such because the faithful will often receive palm fronds which they use to participate in the reenactment of Christ's arrival in Jerusalem. In the Gospels, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a young donkey, and to the lavish praise of the townspeople who threw clothes, or possibly palms or small branches, in front of him as a sign of homage. This was a customary practice for people of great respect.
Palm branches are widely recognized symbol of peace and victory, hence their preferred use on Palm Sunday."

أحد الشعانين هو الأحد السابع من الصوم الكبير والأخير قبل عيد الفصح أو القيامة ويسمى الأسبوع الذي يبدأ به بأسبوع الآلام، وهو يوم ذكرى دخول السيد المسيح إلى مدينة القدس، ويسمى هذا اليوم أيضا بأحد السعف أو الزيتونة لأن أهالي القدس استقبلته بالسعف والزيتون المزين و فارشاً ثيابه وأغصان الأشجار والنخيل تحته، لذلك يعاد استخدام السعف والزينة في أغلب الكنائس للاحتفال بهذا اليوم. وترمز أغصان النخيل أو السعف إلى النصر أي أنهم استقبلوا يسوع كمنتصر.
