In the world of performance supplementation, preworkout drinks and fat burners can be felt within 30 minutes of ingestion.

The products contain a blend of stimulants such as caffeine to boost training performance.

There are many products on the market with varying degrees of ‘strength’ and inexperienced individuals who will be trying one of the products for the first time.

Customer feedback and product reviews regarding the negative side effects of using these products is common.

Understandably users are eager to increase their training performance or accelerate their body transformation journey and use the recommended serving of a ‘strong’ performance supplement which may result in a negative effect experienced.

Many years ago we introduced an Assess Tolerance policy when advising customers on which product to use which we are glad to see a few manufacturers incorporate into their product labelling.

Always assess your tolerance before using the full recommended serving.

Start by using a quarter serving if the product is a powder for a few days and slowly increase over the coming days to the recommended dosage.

Capsule servings typically range from 2 - 3. Just start with one.

Do I use a Mass Gainer or a Whey protein?

This is something we get asked almost everyday, so we’re going to give a rough guide.

The below applies to both women and men.

MASS GAINER

• Build muscle and size.
• Has minimal / average amount of body fat.
• On a calorie surplus.
• Not too concerned about a bit of extra fat accumulation during the muscle building phase.
• Someone who just wants to increase body weight. Not concerned about muscle.

WHEY PROTEIN

• Maintain or build lean muscle.
• Wants to reduce body fat for a toned, lean physique.
• Either on a calorie deficit or maintaining calories.

There will always be exceptions per individual needs.

The above is a great starting point for someone new to the world of supplementation.

The importance of sleep cannot be emphasised enough. 😴

Recovery is broadly mentioned as part of your fitness journey. We want to highlight the importance of enough quality sleep which is a major part of your recovery process.

Top athletes around the world get between 8 - 12 hours of sleep a day. It is reported that Roger Federer gets 11 - 12 of sleep per night, Lebron James gets 12 per day (8 - 9 at night) with a nap during the day.

After 4 days of restricted sleep an athlete's maximum bench press drops 9kg.

Tips for a good night’s sleep

• Do not use a stimulant-based preworkout if you train at night. Rather use a stimulant-free version.
• Make your bedroom as dark as possible.
• Try and keep the room cool.
• Avoid using your phone or computer just before you try to fall asleep. The blue light emitted from the devices may disrupt your sleep. Or use the night mode which reduces the blue light.

The quality of sleep is just as important as the amount.

Make sure you address both to maximise your fitness potential.

Yesterday was World Diabetes Day.

Diabetes and prediabetes is a growing global problem. If left untreated the disease leaves so many people vulnerable to many life changing conditions.

A risk factor for prediabetes leading to type 2 diabetes is being overweight.

The past 12 years we have assisted many individuals wanting or needing to change their lifestyle to reduce body fat.

Before we recommend any supplementation we first ask what they consume and drink.

In almost all cases their staple liquid consumption are coldrinks, yogurt dairy drinks and excessive fruit juice.

Fruit juice and coldrinks contain approximately 10 grams of sugar or fructose per 100ml.

It is not uncommon to hear of people drinking 1 litre (3 - 4 tins of coldrink or juice) per day. More if the temperatures soar.

This amounts to 100 grams of sugar or 400 calories just from liquids.

Fruit juice does contain some beneficial nutrients vs coldrinks, but without the natural fibre which occurs in the fruit the juice does not fill you up and allows for easy consumption.

The preferred liquid is always pure clean water.

Most people know that water is the best option, but just cannot stomach the flavourless taste of water.

They need to ‘retrain’ their taste buds away from sweet, which does take some time.

A solution that we have found to help during the transition period is to use water enhancers which flavour water.

You add a few drops to flavour the water to your liking and slowly reduce the amount of drops until the taste of plain water actually becomes pleasant.

Most needing to lose weight find it overwhelming to drastically change all the aspects of their lifestyle that they have been doing for many years at the same time. This ultimately leads to failure.

Trying to develop new habits with small changes first has resulted in long-term success in our experience.

One of the first and easiest steps is to replace sugary drinks with water or sugar-free flavoured water.

Make a change! It’s never too late.

Today is an opportunity to amplify the awareness of diabetes.

Everyday (okay, maybe not Christmas, Birthdays or New Years) should be an awareness day highlighting the dangers and preventable steps regarding this disease.

The American CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) estimate that more that 1 in 3 Americans are living with prediabetes, which if left untreated puts the person at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

According to the CDC, two preventable lifestyle choices are a healthy diet and being physically active.

We don’t like the term diet as it implies a short-term program to reach a certain goal. Rather a healthy nutrition plan that you and your family can do indefinitely.

In addition to a healthy nutrition plan, incorporating physical active will help control blood sugar levels. We favour weight training has it has so many proven health and longevity benefits.

Over the years we have assisted many individuals wanting to make a drastic change in they way they live their lives.

The best advice we can give is to just start. Make small incremental changes that slowly add up to you reaching your health goals.

A common complaint we get is that a mass gainer is not working.

After using a gainer for 4 - 8 weeks, no weight increase or visible size can be seen.

We then ask if they are still eating THE SAME amount of food when they started using the mass gainer.

The answer is almost always NO!

Their whole food either gets reduced or replaced with the mass gainer, resulting in a similar calorie count which will not increase weight.

A mass gainer is an ADDITION to a quality whole food program for an athlete wanting to increase weight and size.

How long will it take to build muscle?

This is one of the most popular questions asked by guys and obviously a difficult one to answer. Even our trusted crystal ball might struggle with this one.

There are a multitude of factors to consider such as age, current shape, nutrition, sleep, lifestyle, training and genetics.

However we are often pressed into giving an answer or guidelines to give something to work towards.

So from our own lifting experience and many years of research these are our rough guidelines. Guys below 28 would experience greater gains than someone in their 40s.

Most of the questions are asked by guys below 28.

So here goes:

Year 1 : 8 - 12 kg per year
Year 2 : 4 - 6 kg per year
Year 3 : 2 - 3 kg per year
Year 4+ : 0.8 - 2 kg per year

IF and it is a mighty big IF their nutrition is 100% on point, intelligent training, getting enough quality sleep, consistent and they follow a fitness lifestyle (no smoking, limiting alcohol) then the first 2 years of their fitness journey will be very rewarding.

I started training when I was 18, my nutrition was rubbish, terrible training technique / routine, not enough quality sleep and I still made gains but would have been a lot more with what I know today.

Wanting to increase weight or lose fat you need to know the basics of calories.

Calories are your benchmark on your fitness journey.

If you want to increase weight you need to consume more calories than you burn.

Want to lose fat you need to eat less calories.

This is really an oversimplification, but we want to break things down in helpful chunks.

Here are the calorie values of the 3 macronutrients:

1 gram PROTEIN = 4 Calories
1 gram CARBOHYDRATE = 4 Calories
1 gram FAT = 9 Calories

To start increasing weight add an additional 500 calories per day for a month.

Losing fat is a bit more tricky because you don’t want to starve yourself. The general recommended daily calorie amount for women is 2000 and for men 2500.

Use a meal app or create a spreadsheet to track your macronutrients.

We want to add that not all calories are created equal. More posts to follow on that.

Women need to lift weights just as much as men.

The myths are still present regarding women doing weight training. And we mean proper weight training where they are breaking a sweat and safe lifting to their maximum for 8 reps.

Benefits of weight training are plentiful. The biggest is preventing or reducing sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia is age related muscle loss which decreases strength, mobility and changes body composition.

To reduce muscle loss, weight training and adequate protein intake is needed.

You will never look like a 120 kg professional bodybuilder. Instead a toned, lean and fit version of yourself.

We still get asked about Amino Spiking in the sports supplement industry.

Amino Spiking is when amino acids are added to artificially increase the protein value of pure whey products.

It is not a problem if the manufacturers mention that the product has added amino acids with other ingredients such as creatine.

The problem is NOT DISCLOSING the added amino acids and claiming the whey is 100% pure.

It is not as common as it was a few years back, but we still thought we’d give you the tools to spot the fakes from the real deal.

Commonly used are Arginine, Glutamine, Glycine and Taurine.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR

Added amino acids in the ingredients section.

Approximate standard values per 100 grams for a whey shake
ARGININE: 2 grams
GLUTAMINE: 14 grams
GLYCINE: 1.5 grams

Our values are taken from whey manufacturer specification sheets.

Just keep an eye on the 3 amino acids above. Make sure the amounts are approximately the same. If there is a massive difference then be aware.

For example a supplement brand that no longer exists had 9 grams of Glycine compared to 1.5 grams in their 100% Whey Protein shake.

We get asked if South African produced sports supplements are any good or downright terrible compared to international brands.

Let’s get to the point and say there is absolutely nothing wrong with South African sports supplement brands.

Some quick FACTS:

1. There are only a handful of raw ingredient manufacturers / suppliers in the world. The imported international brands use the same ingredients as SA brands. For example a few SA brands use the exact same whey protein that goes into a global premium brand.

2. South Africa has a strict regulatory framework created by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) which brands need to comply with.

3. There are unscrupulous supplement brands in each country. Some well-known brands in the U.S.A. have been involved in class action lawsuits.

South Africa has a vibrant and mature fitness culture with SA brands creating quality and innovative products to match if not exceed those manufactured internationally.

Fear not locally produced supps. As with anything, be wary of SCAMS with false product claims, not made in an approved facility and have ZERO customer support.

We used the 2 most common forms of pea and whey protein found in nutritional supplements for the analysis.

Per 30 gram serving:

PROTEIN: Pea = 25.8 gr (79%) / Whey = 23.7 gr (79%)
BCAA: Pea = 5.3 gr / Whey = 5.6 gr
BIOLOGICAL VALUE: Pea = 64 / Whey = 104

Both cost the same, contain all 9 essential amino acids with a similar Leucine and fat content.

The biggest and one of the most important differences is the Biological Value (BV) which is an indicator of how efficiently your body uses the food.

With a low BV pea protein is not ideal as a shake used before / during or after your workout. Whey would definitely be the best option.

CON / PRO

It is difficult to get the flavouring and texture of Pea protein right. It leaves a ‘grainy’ taste in the mouth. The benefits of using Pea are that it has zero cholesterol and lactose. Perfect for lactose intolerant athletes.

Being an animal-based product Whey contains both cholesterol and lactose. Whey shakes mix easily and can taste really good without the ‘grainy’ taste that Pea has.

So which should you use? We recommend using both to get the benefits of each.
