Join us at WAM for the opening of Stephen Hobbs’ Man Shouting in Distance on Tuesday 17 September 2024 @18:00 for 18:30. The exhibition will be opened by David Andrew Associate Professor, Department of Fine Arts, Wits School of Arts.

Hobbs’ art school years took place at The Wedge on Yale Road (now the Origins Centre), former home to the Metallurgy, and Fine Art Departments and an animal laboratory. Rumours abounded about the basement studio spaces being dumping grounds for radioactive waste and that students lost their minds working down there. Indeed by Hobbs’ fourth year midterm exams he suffered a nervous breakdown and burst a blood vessel in his head. Art psychosis aside, there was something about the spatial atmosphere of that studio, the sense that what existed between my body and the walls was palpable, tangible. And from painting in third year he instinctively gravitated towards the studio in a site-specific way: The concrete and brick hardness of the space called me to respond in a phenomenological way, constantly exploring the intersections of positive and negative space with a variety of experimental objects and tectonic moves. 30 years on, this tendency has remained, be it in the corridors and buildings of Johannesburg, World War I and World War II theatres of war, myriad hospital interiors, and construction sites. To this end city planning, structural engineering, orthopaedic surgery, artistic deception in the battlefield and contingent building technologies have provided lenses for an artmaking practice concerned with visual and material equivalents for defensiveness, congestion, precarity, entropy, and death. These concepts are explored through video, printmaking, bookmaking, assemblage and sculpture.

Parking for the opening event is available in the garage beneath the museum.

Exhibition supported by David Krut Projects, Digital Fabric (Pty) Ltd, Soul Circle Studios and The Trinity Session.

Museum hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 10:00 – 16:00
Entrance is free and all are welcome
Exhibition dates: 17 September – 23 November 2024

Join us this Saturday 7 September 2024 @ 12:00 for the final walkabout by Fouad Asfour's of his exhibtion working title. This is a fantastic opportunity to engage with the artist about their work – don’t miss it!

The installation working title invites visitors to experience writing processes from unexpected perspectives. It is the final installment of Asfour’s practice-based 'creative arts' PhD research project “Un-drawing the Line through Spectrography. Exploring trans-lingual aspects through visual writing”. Visitors are invited to engage in experiences that are located outside of habituated language use by activating spaces of seeing, writing, drawing and doing they carry within themselves. By opening spaces for play and delight, the installation dislocates artworks from their surface and encodes them in glyphs and visual metaphors. Instead of focussing on “making sense”, the installation activates senses towards shared experiences. Thus, it aims to shift conditions of migration, exile or diaspora from the individual towards collective, translingual experiences where multiple identifications can create spaces between the readable and unreadable as “uncommon estrangements” (Sara Ahmed).

Limited on-street parking is available, but we encourage the use of ride hailing systems for convenience.

Museum hours: Tuesday – Saturday 10:00 – 16:00
Entrance is free and all are welcome.

“Come inside, bidding is hot online,” said auctioneer Susie Goodman to late arrivals entering Pierneef’s Kraal Guest Lodge, the former home and studio of much-admired landscape painter J.H. Pierneef and venue for Strauss & Co’s maiden live auction in Pretoria. The two-part auction commenced with a red-hot spotlight sale devoted to South African ceramics.

In an attempt to support the work that we do, as of 2 September, VANSA will be implementing Pay to Post Opportunities on our website. This means that organisations would pay a nominal fee of R100 per opportunity that they would like published on our website and our social media.

How it will work:
- Kindly send us information relating to your opportunity alongside a request for an invoice for your organisation.
- Upon receipt of proof of payment, your opportunity will be published on our website within three working days, and published on social media depending on our scheduled posts.
- We will confirm your opportunity has been published by sending you the website link of your opportunity.

Please feel free to reach out to us via DM or email us on [email protected] should you have queries or need further information.

We trust that this will be met with good faith as this enables our organisation to keep the website running and to continue providing resources to the visual arts community at large.
