A Christmas story which paddler Gerhard Moolman is not likely to forget:
It's December the 24th and Gerhard's family are all at the yacht club for Christmas lunch. Gerhard decided that he would paddle to the yacht club from Buffelsbaai. He rounded the Knysna westerly head and what he saw before him was not anticipated. In his words: "When I saw the heads I realised I made a mistake.The surf was humongous and breaking right accross the heads" As experienced paddler Gerhard managed to get through most of it. With about a 100 meters to go to get safety all hell broke loose. The huge swell broke over him and he fell into the water. He quickly recovered and got back into the surfski, a second swell broke and Gerhard was smashed against his own surfski and this time the ski ripped into two pieces. "What was suppose to be a safe or benign paddle turned into a risky ordeal!! "I started swimming towards a yacht I saw, I could have swum towards the gully rock but I saw that the yacht have spotted me" Now Gerhard was swimming 50 meters into the very strong current. Sandy Marr, our skipper, turned the yacht around and steered back into the impact zone, he swiftly turned the yacht back and deckhand Alix Pepler threw a rope to Gerhard. "I grabbed the rope so that they could pull me out of the impact zone. *chuckle* the water was bloody cold and I still had to hang on to my paddle. I lost my pants and let go of the rope to get them back on and to avoid a rather embarrassing moment. 😳 *chuckle * Sandy turned the yacht again and managed to stop for a second. This time Gerhard managed to get onto the yacht. Sandy maneuverd the yacht closer to Coney Glen beach where he swam to safety. In Gerhard's words : "He was most likely the one and only guy that could have saved me from what could have been a disastrous outcome. With of all his years of yachting experience and being station commander of the NSRI he knew exactly what to do. I'm very grateful to the man and what a great advertisement for your yachting company"
