MODIMOLLE MOUNTAIN (THE PLACE OF SPIRITS)

Thobela bagolo🙏🙏🕯️

Modimolle is a spectacular mountain at Limpompo Province, it is a sacred mountain, home of ancestors, a place of great spiritual and cultural significance

It was and still is an important mountain ya Bapedi, Modimolle was the site of a royal kraal or homestead hotloha ha Kgosikgolo Sekhukhune 1 ele kgosi. It was also a scene of a major battle between Bapedi and boers (the blood the Pedi warriors was shed there)

There are different battles that took place near Modimolle mountain,. e.g the battle of Middlepunt, in 1874 they army led by General Piet Joubert attacked Bapedi who were led by Kgosikgolo Sekhukhune 1,the battle took place at the base of Modimolle, there are other battles that took place close to Modimolle

Many Pedi warriors were captured, some killed, the army burned the royal kraal but in the midst of all that Kgosikgolo showed bravery and strong leadership skills, He restored everything

Modimolle ke thaba enang le seriti ka mabaka, first it was site of the royal kraal od Chief Sekhukhune 1, the kraal was associated with power, In African Spirituality a kraal is a place of power and protection, dingaka diya lesebetsa lesaka, honale meriana or lenaka le boima hodima thaba eno leneng le etselitswe Morena Sekhukhune ho tshirelletsa lesaka lahao, thaba eno ke lenaka la bapedi ka boeona, history ya bona emono, lenaka la bona le mono

Secondly it was a place of pilgrimage and rituals (ke moo dingaka tsa Bapedi le tseneng liahile selekane le bona baneng ba kopana teng, hophethisa le hona honka matla a semoya)

Thirdly after the battle of moletlane number of Pedi warriors who were killed were burried on the slopes of the mountain, it was a way of honoring them for their sacrifice and bravery, and it was believed that their spirits will continue guarding the royal kraal and the land(that is why it was so difficult to enter that mountain bcz kukhona amabutho at the entrance apparently now it

Shona kingdoms and empires: before Mzilikazi arrived and the colonialists Cecil john Rhodes.

* Changamire D***o: Rozvi Empire (1500s)
* Chibanda: Rozvi Empire (17th century)
* Nyatsimba Mutota: Mutapa Empire (16th century)
* Nehanda Nyakasikana: Spirit medium and leader in the First Chimurenga (late 19th century)
* Munhumutapa: Mutapa Empire (15th to 18th century)
* Tohwechipi: Shona ruler who resisted Mzilikazi's rule (19th century)
* Kapararidze: Founder of the Changa dynasty in the 19th century
* Chirumanzu: Ruler of the Chirumanzu dynasty in the 19th century
* Mangwende: Founder of the Mangwende dynasty in the 18th century
* Kumbirai: Rozvi king during the decline of the Rozvi Empire (19th century)
The Mbire Svosve dynasty was an important political unit in the history of present-day Zimbabwe, dating back to the 11th century. They were associated with the land of Mbire, (ChangaMbire) an area around Mount Wedza that became famous for its involvement in the Njanja hoe trade and as a center of iron mining (Mhangura-Iron). The dynasty are direct descendents the Soko/vudzijena/Pfumojena people of the Mutapa state area, including the prominent NeMbire dynasty...the builders of Dzimbabgwe.

Rulers of the Mbire Svosve dynasty included:
* Svosve Chikunga (ruled circa 1759-1785)
* Svosve Choto Mtuta Chidyausiku (ruled circa 18..-1896)

History records Mzilikazi waging wars with the local kings ... It is not true that Mzilikazi found empty land with no kings..its a lie.
While exact dates for each specific conflict between Mzilikazi and the various local kings may not be exact.. These dates are on record..

* 1820s-1830s: Mzilikazi and his Ndebele people began their northward migration from Zululand, coming into conflict with Shona groups along the way.
* 1830s-1840s: Mzilikazi established the Ndebele kingdom in present-day Zimbabwe and continued to expand his territory through military conquest. During this time, he fought against several Shona rulers, including Tohwechipi and Chirumanzu.
* 1840s-1850s: The Ndebele kingdom reached its peak under Mzilikazi's rule, but continued to face resistance from Shona groups like the Mangwende dynasty and the Changa dynasty under Kapararidze.
* 1850s-1860s: The Rozvi Empire, led by King Kumbirai, resisted Mzilikazi's expansion and fought several battles against the Ndebele.
In the desire to create a " Mthwakazi" nation in the south ...truth is important and should there be another version of history it must not be used to help private interpretations by those who want to use Zulu supremacy over Shona dynasties. FoT

"Lydenburg" is a town in Mpumalanga, South Africa, but the word itself has a very interesting history. "Lydenburg" comes from the Dutch words "lyden" (meaning "to suffer") and "burg" (meaning "town"). It was originally named "Lydenburg" by Voortrekkers, a group of Dutch settlers who founded the town in the 1840s. They gave it this name because of the malaria-infested conditions in the area, which caused many of the settlers to fall ill and suffer greatly.

THE ORIGIN OF BOTLOKWA!

“ In the beginning a Tlokwa man took a wife, it is not known where the woman
came from. The two gave birth to many children, who in turn also had many children.
Thus the Tlokwa multiplied. First they became a family, then a clan, then they became a village and the village increased to form a nation to be called Batlokwa. That is the story
of the coming of the Batlokwa people”. Our source

Our aim is to share with you the little facts about a dusty Botlokwa. Because of lack of contemporary documentary evindence on the subject it has been necessary to approach
descendants of the earliest settlers (who are few to say).We hope to convey a sense of what it was like here in those days. There are so many conflicting accounts and it is impossible to tell what really happened. We will tell what seems to be the most coherent story.

We are told, before Tlokwa community came into being this area was occupied by the
Vendas “ba Senthumule” hence the name of some villages which makes up Botlokwa.
The assumption is that village names such as Matseke, Mphakane,Ramatjoe etc. are venda words whose meanings are not known. The Batlokwas are originally from Basotholand under kgosi Manthatisi then. Having had numerous relocations enroute to the north their last temporary settlement was somewhere in Moletsi. From Moletsi then they came down to here across hundreds of miles of bare and inhospitable veld. When they arrive at “nokeng ya Letsatsana” they could see clustered huts and tents from a distance around “Thabeng ya Mphakane” which implied that there were people (the Vendas) living there . They had to hide and wait until late in the night so that they can launch an attack. A number of vendas were killed while some fled and those who survived the attack were absorbed by the Tlokwas. Today the place is popularly known as Botlokwa ga Machaka in honour of first Kgosi Machaka who played an important part in the establishement of Botlokwa location.

Our other source say chief Machaka had two sons who were always at logger heads at each other. One day a tiger was reported to be troubling the people at a small mountain next to “Ka Dipateng”. The mountain was later to be known as “Tlapeng la Nkwe”. The creature was killed and its skin caused a big problem to kgosi Machakas two sons. They fought for the skin and “kgosi” had to separate them by relocating one to the north east
were we today call Mokomene ga Ramokgopa while the other one remained at Mphakane. The one posted at Mokomene later changed his name to Ramokgopa the name inspired by the tiger skin they fought for. Because of fear of possible attack by outside enemies kgosi Machaka had to apply security measures. He posted his other half brothers to some strategic points each with his people and that’s how villages like Makgato , Matseke , Sekonye , Sekakene, and Ramatjoe came into being. Machaka remained with subvillages like Dipatene,Ga polatla,Dikgading within Mphakane precinct. The efforts was to place Mphakane as the royal palace in the center for Machakas protection.

The Vendas who were by then converted to Tlokwa were good in place naming.
Everywere it pays to be based at the head office and that is why we hear old men of today when they are intimidated by their bullies calls themselves boys of Mphakane –“mosimana wa Mphakane” – they always associate themselves with the ruling place.

The other source is telling us the two Machakas sons (who fought for the animal skin) rift is still prevalent. Today Ramokgopa is ruling his tribe on his own and is having Eisleben and Phasha villages as his tribes. Proof of this rift is there for everyone to see. Often we hear people of Mokomene saying they are going to Botlokwa when coming to Mphakane as if they were not Tlokwas. You suddenly start to sense that something fishy is happening.

Who said force removals only happens in urban black townships like Alexandra and Diepsloot .Also rural black settlements were targets. We are told in the 70s an attempt was made by the then apartheid government to move Batlokwa to a place called Vivo. They were planning to mine coal here seeing that the area is rich in coal underground. These attempt was thwarted by Kgosi Letheba Machaka but not through fights. He engaged them in talks and won. But the Makgato people were more than happy to move as they were promised luxury houses. Some sorts of kickbacks/Insentives were promised to tribal chiefs to convince them . The Makgato people are today settling some 300 kilometres next to Thabammopo and surprisingly the beautiful houses promised are not there.
Kgosi Lethebas effort to stop the relocation must be appreciated by all because places like ViVo and Kroomhoek offers no luxury as such. One can wonder how people there survive.
