2023 SRC inaugurated
The Inauguration of the 2023 SRC took place on 16 January on main campus at Senate Hall. During the ceremony the Director of Student Affairs, Dr Matete Madiba gave a speech offering important advice about the challenges the SRC will face during their term as well as how to best manage these challenges while still balancing their university studies. After Dr Madiba’s words of encouragement, the new SRC members were sworn into office by Chief Justice Lesedi Ngubeni. Though the SRC duties only officially start on 17 January, the SRC has already been busy with registration issues as well as academic exclusions and had a full schedule of meetings with university personnel.
On 10 September at around 01:40, a BCom Hon International Auditing student was shot close to Tuksdorp, after an altercation on Grosvenor and South Street. According to the Director of the Department of Institutional Advancement, Rikus Delport, the shooter attempted to flee the scene but was subsequently caught and arrested by SAPS. After attempts to stabilise the student on scene, he passed away. Delport reported that the student’s friends and family have been offered counselling services.
UP management stated that they are saddened by the event and that students are reminded to utilise the Green Route when walking to their vehicles or place of residence. The service is available from 18:00 to 06:00.

Following student demonstrations on 22 August, Vice Chancellor Prof. Kupe has released a statement.
He stated: “This is unacceptable, and we are taking steps against those in breach of our institution’s policies and who have made themselves guilty of misconduct.”
Prof. Kupe further elaborated on the fee increase by saying that “the increase […] followed lengthy and detailed discussions with all stakeholders last year including the SRC”.
The SRC confirmed these discussions in a media release, dated 22 August, stating that “till, date no engagement has resulted in the University compromising its view regarding this matter”.
Members of the SRC and students continue to demonstrate at various locations on UP’s Hatfield campus.

SRC President, Thuto Mashile, has confirmed that protest action will continue on 23 August.
According to the SRC, disruptions will continue until UP management agrees to engage with the SRC.
The Vice-Principal of Student Life, Prof. Mosia, stated in an email that “they [the executive] will handle the matter further with disrupters”.
This is a developing story.
On 22 August, the SRC hosted a mass meeting following the decision of UP management to increase registration fees in 2023. The SRC has mobilised students with the aim of disrupting student activities on campus. The march started at the student center before moving to Thuto, Centenary, and the IT Building to disrupt lectures. The SRC is calling for the total shutdown of campus and aim to disrupt the upcoming SRC elections. Dr Willem Jorissen, Deputy Director of the Department of Student Affairs, said that the actions of the SRC and students is against UP policy and that they will face disciplinary action. Secretary General of the SRC, Tarik Lalla, told students that the university cannot tell them about financial strain as the reason for fee increases, because students themselves are also facing the same challenges. Lalla urged students to damage the image of the university on social media and disrupt all the activities of the university.
