This week, we are proud to welcome Ané van Staden and Megan-Geoffrey Prins for the final Lunch Hour Concert of the year. They will perform Violin and Piano Sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven and Maurice Ravel. For the last item of the concert, Ané van Staden will be joined by students from the Classical Music Studies programme to perform the String Octet by Max Bruch.

Audience members who do not have a UP staff or student card will be required to show the following admission ticket at the gates (see the attachment).

This week, we are proud to welcome the TUKS Camerata, conducted by Michael Barrett. The Tuks Camerata, which celebrates its 55th anniversary this year, has received many national and international accolades. The choir’s mission is to contribute towards the cultural development of the student body, to enrich the lives of the students and the broader community through choral singing, and to act as cultural ambassadors of the University of Pretoria. The Camerata falls under the auspices of the School of the Arts (Faculty of Humanities) and consists of 80 full-time students from a variety of study fields, including medicine, engineering, theology, law, education, economics, accounting, plant sciences and music.

Audience members who do not have a UP staff or student card will be required to show the following admission ticket at the gates (see the attachment).

This week, we are proud to welcome UP Ovuwa Cultural Ensemble, directed by Mxolisi Duda. Founded in 1998, UP Ovuwa is a cultural and skills development ensemble which aims to develop, educate, nurture and inspire UP students and audiences through arts and culture. UP Ovuwa performs a repertoire of African dances and songs accompanied by various indigenous percussive instruments.

Join Tessa Rhoodie as she presents a recital with music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johannes Brahms.
Tessa Rhoodie is a senior lecturer in the Classical Music Studies programme at the University of Pretoria, School of the Arts. She teaches piano, aural training, piano methodology, and chamber music. Her book on Piano tuition earned her a National Arts Council award in 2000. With a vast publication history, Tessa’s research interests are piano methodology, pedagogy, and aural training. She was awarded a grant from the University of Pretoria in 2019 to conduct a project on Piano Foundation Technique in Animation. As a solo pianist, Tessa recorded all Chopin Nocturnes in 2022. She adjudicates and chairs numerous national competitions and is on various music examination boards.

Join Ben Schoeman as he presents a recital honouring Sergei Rachmaninoff’s 150 birthday. The concert will feature the Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op. 42, one of Rachmaninoff’s significant late works. In addition, you will also get to enjoy other pieces that the composer himself played during his piano recitals. These include Claude Debussy’s Suite Pour le Piano (1901) and Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 12. The recital will showcase the
piano’s diverse colours, offering a journey through various stylistic periods.

ORGAN RECITAL

2023 marks the 10-year installation anniversary of the Rieger organ in the UP Chapel. As part of the anniversary celebrations, Mario Nell and Theo van Wyk will perform a diverse music programme to showcase the vast array of capabilities and timbres of this organ. The programme includes compositions by Viennese composers – the city where the Rieger organ was originally located – and newly-commissioned works by South African composers.

AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS

Gian Carlo Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors made its appearance as the first opera written for television. The opera depicts the night when Three Kings, guided by the star of Bethlehem, stop for shelter at the home of Amahl, a poor and crippled shepherd boy who lives with his widowed mother. Through its warm and compassionate story, this opera captures the spirit of selflessness. The production, directed by Tinus Spies, features students from the UP Classical Voice and Opera Studies programme coordinated by Hanli Stapela.

Women’s Day serves as a reminder of the role and impact of South African women in our fight for freedom. Women’s Month serves as a reminder of the tenacity, resilience and power that women possess. This concert sounds and celebrates the often-subjected voices of Black South African female jazz composers and musicians. These include artists such as Nomfundo Xaluva, Lindi Ngonelo and Gloria Bosman.

Musicians: Nthabiseng Motsepe-Notyesi (Voice), Phuti Sepuru (Piano), Viwe Mkizwana (Double bass), Ntsikelelo Jack Mcwabe (Trumpet) and Mzamo Mthembu (Drums).
