Ethnikids is an online bookstore specialising in children's books that feature characters of colour! We are passionate about igniting a love of reading in our children, and providing diverse material that more children can relate to and identify with. We have the widest selection of local and international books featuring protagonists of colour in South Africa.
Our final pair of local creatives that we are profiling worked on the storybook called 'Trevor the Hero'. It is written by the marvelous and illustrated by talented Cariesha Steenkamp. Trevor lives in a magical village with a problem: a giant is stealing everything! When he trades his pet rhinocorn for what seems to be a worthless seed, he finds himself on a risky journey up a gigantic tree. FEATURE FRIDAY: Our favourite part of the project is the opportunity to collaborate with amazing authors and illustrators to produce the local storybooks. The theme this year was fairytales set in an African context, and Siphokazi Madlingozi and Anastasya Eliseeva partnered up to create 'The Sparrow and the Horned Nightbird'.
In the story, the sparrow is granted five wishes by the magical horned nightbird. He uses them to adopt the qualities of other birds he admires but ends up complicating his life and losing his flock. The experience teaches him that self-love and acceptance are the real keys to happiness.

We celebrate the International Day of Non-Violence (2 October Mahatma Ghandi's birthday) with an author spotlight. Child author Siyavuya Mabece wrote a book called 'Enough! Then it realised that, first, it needed to help learners with their home languages.
