The DSI-THENSA partnership offered a 2-day Supervisor Enhancement Workshop for supervisors from various institutions throughout South Africa. The workshop was held on the 15th and 16th July at the Premier Hotel in Umhlanga; Kwa- Zulu Natl. A total of 162 nominations were received by the closing date. Of these, 50 candidates were selected to attend the workshop based on their fields of study and research interests which were restricted to Science, Technology, and Innovation. The group comprised of scientists, health scientists, ICT specialists and Engineers. Candidates who attended were from The Cape University of Technology, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Tshwane University of Technology, University of Cape Town, University of Johannesburg, University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, University of Pretoria, University of Venda, University of Zululand, University of the Western Cape and Vaal University of Technology.
Of the 50 nominees, 47 attended the two-day workshop in its entirety. Various aspects of supervision and supervisory aspects were discussed, debated and numerous links were forged between candidates representing various universities and resulted in the formation of an inter university cohort to initiate communities of supervisory practice. Furthermore, several commitments to collaborative projects were established.Candidates were extremely engaging and participated with enthusiasm and vigour.
The workshop was facilitated by three national and one international facilitator. The combination of facilitators covering the various aspects of supervising students in the Sciences, Engineering, ICT and Health Sciences, brough together a rich mix conducive to the supervision of post graduate students in these areas.

The South African Technology Network (SATN) was established in 2006 by five South African Universities of Technology (UoTs), which resulted in the registration of the SATN trust in August 2008. The change of name in 2019 from SATN to THENSA (Technological Higher Education Network South Africa) was an outcome of the change in its membership to include all technology focussed institutions, the teaching, learning, research, and innovation agendas that it set itself.
THENSA exists to enable its partner institutions to respond to the challenges and targets set in the NDP, the UN SDGs, and the Africa 2063 Agenda, through Technological Education, Research, and Innovation.
THENSA’s guiding principles include connecting minds, establishing networks for collaboration between smart institutions focussed on Technology Research and Innovation with its key focus being the promotion and advancement of Science, Engineering, Arts and Technology Programmes for the world of work. THENSA is the catalyst that capitalises on the collective voice, strengths and opportunities of its members for the benefit of its students, staff, researchers, innovators, and its business and industry partners.
