Big step for new official language in South Africa The NCOP has passed the Constitutional Eighteenth Amendment Bill onto President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Attention all employers!
With the excellent news of Sign Language becoming the 12th official language, we also want to raise awareness about the potential risks of hiring a hearing fraudster pretending to be deaf.
To ensure that you are hiring a qualified deaf individual for the position, we recommend adding a compulsory audiogram to your job advert. This will require applicants to undergo a comprehensive audiological evaluation to measure their hearing ability.
By taking this simple precaution, you can protect your company and provide equal opportunities for deaf individuals in the workplace. Just think about it, if you hire a hearing fraudster pretending to be deaf, what else could such a person do to your company?

Update 17 April 2023 - Regarding SASL becoming a 12th Official Language.
Hello everyone,
As someone passionate about advocating for the Deaf community, I am deeply concerned about the issue of Deaf schools paying their assistant teachers meagre salaries. I have heard of cases where Deaf assistant teachers are earning as little as R2500 to R4000 per month, which is far from a livable wage.
Deaf individuals are just as capable and deserving of fair compensation for their valuable work in the education sector. It's unfair that they are being paid so little for their dedication and hard work, which can negatively impact their quality of life.
As a society, we need to prioritize fair wages for Deaf employees, including assistant teachers in Deaf schools. They deserve to be paid a livable salary that reflects their qualifications, skills, and contributions to the education system.
I urge Deaf schools and other organizations to ensure that Deaf assistant teachers are compensated fairly, with wages that enable them to meet their basic needs and have a decent standard of living. It's time to prioritize the well-being and dignity of Deaf individuals in the workplace.
Let's work together to advocate for fair wages for Deaf employees and create a more inclusive and equitable society.

Update on : 14 March 2023
The portfolio committee on Justice and Correctional services received a summary response from the Department of Justice and Correctional Services on the submissions and public hearings , they responded to the 2 persons that opposed the amendment:
There was only two persons opposing SASL as an official language : Herewith briefly
*Mlungisi Zwane from LQZ* the department recognised that all spoken languages used around the world have dialects
*Prof Theodore du Plessis* the department stated that the submission will not change the content of the bill
The Honourable members did not oppose the bill and suggested that they consult with their respective parties to approve the report on Friday , 17 March 2023
The honourable chairperson said that once the report is approved , it will be submitted to Parliament to debate the Constitution 18th Amendment Bill and a 2/3 majority vote is needed in Parliament to pass this bill .

Our Story
It all started with a FAKE Sign Language interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s funeral.
I was determined to save this beautiful language from corruption and show the world what Real South African Sign Language is, I started documenting Signs at my own cost and eventually created A Sign Language dictionary searchable by handshapes, location or text.
Another goal was a 12thOfficial Language, but we had a problem; there is no unification in Sign. For example, there are at least four Signs for “TRY” – which variation should one learn? To get passed this obstacle, we created a voting system where Deaf, once logged in to realsasl.com, can vote for the SIGNS they use most frequently. After voting for the sign, the sign with the most votes will get a sticker that shows the sign is popular. This way we keep all four Signs for “TRY”, but at least there is an indication which one is popular.
The Sign Language Dictionary assist many teachers; before teachers went to ASL dictionaries when they couldn’t find South African Signs online – ASL started seeping into SASL and the aim is always to protect South African Sign Language. We are currently busy with developing an APP for Android.
