CALL FOR PAPERS:
IMAGE & TEXT SPECIAL EDITION (2024)
STORIES WORTH TELLING: CRAFTING STORIES THROUGH THE ART OF DESIGN.
The art of storytelling is very much like constructing & writing a play. In illustrating, drawing, painting, constructing, sculpting, compositing, designing, photographing, editing & composing imagery on the page, screen or space, the storyteller acts out, visually, a play of rhetorical signs.
Storytelling is the most basic and complex challenge facing communication designers. Following the landmark UP Information Design division’s Stories Worth Telling retrospective exhibition held in June of 2023, this special edition of Image & Text invites writers, designers, artists, curators, producers, publishers & critics alike to submit an abstract for an article on the art of storytelling through image/text interplays that dance upon the editorial stage or other spaces. In this issue, we welcome submissions from numerous fields of art & design that articulate, critique and engage with visual stories. Stories that weave together pockets of history, cultural experiences, design and art pedagogy, unique points of view, & creative engagement.
If you are interested in featuring in this special issue of Image & Text, or have any related queries, submit a 500-1000 word abstract to [email protected] by 31st January 2024.

Title of project: Communication for Collaboration
Awarded a Bronze Loerie
Communication is sound. Sound is music. And music is something that everyone enjoys, even if in different forms. As an introduction to the theme “Communication for Collaboration,” this infomotion uses music as a metaphor to explain what that is. In a band, all members have to successfully communicate to compose good tunes. This relies on active listening, interest, empathy, and engaging in constructive discussions with clear outcomes laid on the turn table. The same applies to communication for collaboration for the sake of ECI.

Title of project: Emoshi Monsters
Awarded a Bronze Loerie
Rationale:
Emoshi Monsters is an app designed for children aged 4-8, where the exciting worlds of storytelling, artistic expression, and connection collide in a playful adventure. This app helps children identify and engage with emotions through curiosity and play in the real world. Nurture their imagination and growth with a community of friendly Emoshi Monsters, so that talking about how they feel is no longer as scary as it seems.

Project Title: (In) Stability
Awarded a Bronze Loerie
Rationale:
The book's narrative follows the life of Ntando whose upbringing involved fighting for his life on more than one occasion. Having to escape death at the hands of his uncle after both of his parents died, dodge the Apartheid police and the most challenging of all, convincing Noxolo to give him a chance.
The visual style is made up of aggressive and expressive textures with a child-like, finger-painted illustration style. The visuals illustrate the perspective of the subject, taking the viewer through the subject's emotions and psyche, allowing the illustrations to adopt a more surrealist approach. The story's narrative is written in the perspective of a third person viewing the events, providing an observatory approach and an alternative view to the visuals.

Project Title: Wolf Winter
Awarded a Bronze Loerie
Rationale:
Wolf Winter is adapted from Cecilia Ekback's novel. The blurb describes a desolate town where a man's co**se had been found. The wounds inflicted were believed to be from a wolf, however, suspicions were raised as the cuts were too clean. Wolf Winter suggests that nature is ferocious, unpredictable, and sharply intelligent. Therefore, our title sequence aimed to convey nature as an overpowering threat as it watches; tracks and conceals the town's secrets. We used a monochromatic colour scheme with rough charcoal textures to craft an eerie, mysterious, and suspenseful mood.

Project Title: Nuvine
Rationale:
Nestled in the mountains of Franschhoek, Nuvine is an organic winery committed to sustainable viticulture. Artfully creating a new blend of tradition, the brand combines the practices of Afrikaans and ancient Thai farming techniques to produce wines that are not only healthier for wine lovers but also promote the well-being of the environment. So, what’s swirling in the barrel? In this eco-friendly mix, Nuvine substitutes harmful pesticides with a mighty flock of runner ducks! Beyond this, Nuvine encourages a more peaceful and environmentally conscious lifestyle conveyed in the organic visual approach.

Project Title: The Tale of Logan Ninefingers
Awarded a Silver Loerie
Rationale: The Tale of Logan Ninefingers is a title sequence for an adaptation of the book, 'The Blade Itself', by Joe Abercrombie. Belonging to a series, each episode has a unique title sequence to introduce it, all in the same style. This particular title sequence belongs to episode 1: A sword-clashing sequence of chaos and fantasy.
The concept looks at the tradition of recording historic events in exaggerated proportions as they turn from truth into legend. With every retelling, the truth becomes more bizarre and absurd. We decided to create a pop-up book style that alludes to the idea of a legend being told. 15th-century woodcuts inform the basis of this concept’s style. We chose this style as it is a common way in which the medieval era documented their heroes, and is immediately recognisable as lore. The style allows for the absurdity of the legend to blend in with the epicness of the story taking place.
