In this month we are taking a deeper look at chronic immunological and neurological diseases and today we educate about Multiple Sclerosis (MS):
MS is a disease in which an individual’s immune system degenerates the protective covering of its nerves.
Common symptoms:
Muscle Weakness, poor balance and Co-ordination, fatigue, muscle stiffness.
How can Biokinetics help:
Although it may be daunting, some studies show that the benefits of exercise far out way the challenges.
Exercises need to be:

Post Covid-19 Exercise Protocol 🔦
If you have tested positive for Covid-19 it is recommended to gradually return to exercise, activities and work in a safe manner, a Biokineticist can assist in this process.
Your first session may include a few tests to gauge your current physical function and capacity.
As you move up from stage 1 of the protocol your body will develop a greater capacity for exercise until work your way up to safely returning to exercise or work.

This weeks 5 things learned...
Some of the facts may be things I've learned before but seen in a new context or found some new research on the topic.
For example I came across an awesome article on the use of resistance training as medicine, where I came across some statistics on the effectiveness it has on a host of diseases. The health benefits resistance training has was not new to me however the stats were.

Completing his BHSc Biokinetics at The University of The Witwatersrand in 2016 and his BCom Sports Management in 2015 at The University of Johannesburg.
Jared has experience working with elite athletes such as Banyana Banyana, Bafana u23s, CAF soccer referee's, SA female indoor cricket team and the New Zealand indoor netball Tri-nations (2018) & World Cup (2019) teams.

A friend of mine has been doing something like this for a while now and I thought it would be interesting to adapt the concept to be more medical related (PS. I did ask for permission).
Each Friday I will post 5 things I've either learned or thought provoking questions I've had over the past 7 days.
There are some interesting facts that I learn from articles, podcasts, social media posts, experiences with patients and conversations with people of all walks of life.
These conversations occasionally leave some unanswered questions, which leads to some interesting "thoughts".
"Never stop learning... because life never stops teaching".
Injury recovery and prevention is best optimized when approached from a holistic view, sleep needs to be considered as an important factor. Optimizing sleep can make one's path to recovery more effective.
These pictures illustrate how and why sleep plays an important role in our recovery.
"Prevention is better then cure" lack of sleep can put one at a higher risk of injury/reinjury.
For those that are injured lack of sleep may hinder the rehabilitation process.
There is a reason most high performance athletes treat sleep with the up most respect. It allows them to perform at an elite level every day while preventing injury.

Here is some info relating to the importance of exercise and seeing a Bio to:
1) prevent Cancer
2) exercise safely during Cancer treatment
3) recovery phase from Cancer
Exercise is believed to affect the internal environment of the cell to suppress the growth of a tumour. There is evidence that physical activity reduces the cell’s capacity for multiplying. It activates the genetic programming accountable for suppressing tumours, and increases markers of programmed cell death (essential for normal cell growth). All three functions above are the exact processes needed to fight against the development of cancer. Physical activity also improves blood flow in the poorly constructed blood vessels in the tumour, helping chemotherapies and the immune system to fight the tumour. The latter explains the meaningfulness of exercise during cancer treatment. Another benefit is that exercise can also help improve your emotional wellbeing which in return will help you stick to your cancer treatment regime .

Sleep studies...
Our sleep is an incredible tool for recovery, disease prevention and optimizing performance and productivity. It can also be seen as very fragile as any changes show immediate and some times severe impact.

These studies showed that it's not just the quantity of sleep we get but also the quality.
Even for most people who do not work night shifts it is important to get most of our sleep during night time.

The results from this study shocked me... It is incredible how much of an impact the loss of sleep can have on our effectiveness.

The old tale of getting into bed early before a test was correct all along. This may be a critical component to add to your preparation before an activity that requires high levels of performance, focus or functioning eg. races, tests, even a big meeting.
Sleep hygiene is defined as a set of behavioral and environmental recommendations intended to promote healthy sleep.
With the main components being:
* Sleep schedule
* Activities (exercise)
* Food and substances (stimulants)
* Sleep environment
Adequate sleep can be just as important for your health as diet and exercise. With many studies showing how improving sleep hygiene lowers the risk of many diseases.
Besides for the health benefits sleep hygiene has many other benefits that we often take for granted. Just to mention a few: clarity of mind, productively, being more creative, improved reactions and better self esteem.
Small bouts of lack of sleep may only have acute effects, but once poor sleep hygiene becomes a chronic problem that is when the negative effects may impact our health.
Take a few seconds and consider how "clean" is your sleep hygiene...
A funny reminder that exercises can be done incorrectly and should be performed in a manner that will optimise that movement.
