In Khayelitsha, Mama Nolitha Ndalasi runs an egg-laying project that makes a significant impact in her community. With the eggs from her hens, she bakes daily, boils eggs for sale, and offers fresh eggs to the community. "Eggs are like having meat for people in my community who can’t afford to buy meat. I am supplying that much-needed protein to my community."

Her team, led by Mamvulane, ensures the egg-laying batteries are clean and the chickens are well-fed and watered every day.

🌟 Meet Mama Albertina Bloko: A Beacon of Love and Courage 🌟

At the Tyilulwazi Centre for the Disabled, Mama Albertina stands as a pillar of strength and compassion. When she saw differently-abled children in her community being isolated and hidden away, she knew she had to act. In 2005, she founded a center to support these children and change their lives.

Mama Albertina provides quality nutrition from her organic food garden and early learning stimulation. Her dedication inspires the children to exceed their perceived limitations. She offers a safe environment where they can practice various skills, including knitting, baking biscuits, arts, hand sewing, and beadwork.

At over 80 years old, Mama Glenrose Mashiqa is still passionately teaching at Funulwazi School in Mdantsane, East London. Recently, Prof. Elain visited the school to check in on her, only to find she was at home, grieving the loss of a family member.

Visiting her at home turned into a heartwarming moment, as Mama Glenrose was overjoyed to see Prof. Elain at her door! Despite everything, she continues to bake, arrange flowers, and knit, keeping her volunteers engaged and always needing more wool for their projects.

🌿 "Farming is my life! As someone deeply connected to the land, I believe my livelihood stems from it. These vegetables are my harvest. I use horses to uplift the potatoes, and through sheer hard work, I've achieved a bountiful produce. I hire ten temporary workers to assist me, and they are delighted to take home a generous selection of vegetables.“ – Mama Doris Ndingane, Keiskammahoek

Mama Feziwe Gambo, hailing from Amanzimtoti, has turned her passion for gardening into an inventive project! 🌱 She decided to create her garden using old tires. These repurposed tires, painted in vibrant hues, now grace the cement areas around her home.

Undeterred by the lack of expansive garden beds, Mama Feziwe’s “tyre gardens” provide ample space for planting various vegetables. She’s particularly proud of her flourishing spinach! 🌿👏

By growing quality homegrown vegetables, Mama Feziwe not only nourishes her family but also contributes to the well-being of the children at her Centre.
