Celebrating Muratie's leading ladies: Alberta Annemarie 🍷
Alberta Annemarie Canitz took over the running of Muratie from her father, the renowned artist George Paul Canitz, in 1958. She was one of the first women in the country to play a leading role in winemaking. Our Merlot is named after this formidable lady who was passionate about horseriding and preserving Muratie's historical character. In fact Annemie, as she was fondly known, sold the farm back to the Melck Family in 1987 on condition that everything remain exactly the same as it was in her father's time – the manor house with its wealth of precious artifacts, the cellar, his art studio and famous 'kneipzimmer'. Her indomitable spirit lives on in Muratie's unique old-world ambiance.

Celebrating Muratie's leading ladies: Ansela van de Caab!
This Women's Month, we are honouring all the women who have played an integral role in shaping Muratie's history and heritage. Our founding matriarch, Ansela van de Caab, has an inspirational story. This year marks 329 years since she was emancipated from slavery and came to live on Muratie with her beloved Laurens Campher and their three children. Ansela played a major role in establishing the farm with Laurens – they had to perform most of the labour themselves and struggled to make ends meet. Ansela continued to farm with eldest son Cornelis for five years after Laurens' death before selling the property in 1735. The oak tree she planted still towers over the farmyard as an enduring tribute to our enterprising pioneers.

The Senator – a wine of stature 🍷
It is the perfect time of year to indulge in our delicious dessert wines, and The Senator Cape Late Bottled Vintage is certainly a rare treat. This small-batch port-style wine is named after Sir Walter Ernest Mortimer Stanford, owner of Muratie from 1908-1911, and member of the Cape Legislative Assembly who argued strongly for universal voting rights regardless of race or gender. The wine is made from a 'field blend' of port varieties planted in 1972 by then-winemaker Ben Prins. It is matured for 5 years in selected old French oak barrels to create a seamlessly integrated and layered dessert wine. A refined example of this traditional category, and a wonderful tribute to a great leader, statesman and humanitarian.

Meet Ryland: our cellar ninja 🥷
Our cellar team has a distinct international flavour and his name is Ryland Clarence. Born in Edmonton in Alberta, Canada, Ryland also lived in Vancouver, BC before moving to South Africa where he has family. He originally planned to work in South Africa for only a year, but after starting a cellar internship at Muratie in 2021, the winemaking bug bit. 2023 was a big year for Ryland: he got married to his beautiful wife Chanelle, started studying winemaking at Elsenburg and also welcomed Violet the friendly Rottweiler to their home.
True to his Canadian roots, Ryland has a passion for adventure sports so when he is not working or studying, he enjoys Jiu-Jitsu martial arts and riding his superbike. His commitment and engaging personality make him a valuable part of the team.
A ray of Amber to brighten the grey 🍷
“To happy days and glorious nights, Forever Amber,” was the famous toast of George Paul Canitz, owner of Muratie from 1921 to 1958. He was referring to the novel by Kathleen Winsor, set in 17th-century England, about Amber St Clare, who rose to prominence in British society by sleeping with influential men. Canitz insisted that his fortified sweet wine was named after this fictitious character but in truth, the renowned artist had an Amber of his own. She was his model and muse, and her portrait still hangs in the Muratie cellar.
Our Amber Forever dessert wine is just as intriguing as the story behind its name. It is made from a small Hanepoot (Muscat d'Alexandrie) block of less than one hectare, planted in 2001. With luscious layers of Turkish Delight, rose petals, poached pears and peaches, it is pure sunshine in a glass, but beautifully balanced by a racy acidity. The perfect wine for grey winter days.

A soaking wet few weeks,
We are only halfway through the month, but already it has been the wettest July at Muratie in the last 10 years. 272 millimetres of rain have already been recorded, surpassing our most recent 10-year high for this month, which was 203 mm measured in 2019. We are currently at 492 mm total rainfall for the year, well on track to beat our long-term annual average of 630 mm. The good rain has replenished groundwater levels and the very low temperatures of recent weeks will allow the vines to build ample reserves for the new growing season. We are grateful for the ideal winter conditions, even if the soggy soil has made pruning quite tricky for our vineyard team!
A good reason to rise and shine!
Get your day off to a solid start with our Dirtopia winter breakfast deal – buy your permits for marked MTB, hiking and trail run routes at only R120 per person and receive a warm filled croissant and excellent coffee prepared by our Farm Kitchen. 10 seasons strong for Hattingh 🍷
Today our winemaker Hattingh de Villiers is celebrating 10 years in charge of the cellar at Muratie. Hattingh is a hands-on winemaker with a passion for the entire production process, and you will mostly find him tending to vineyards or lugging around barrels, showing the ropes and leading his team from the front. He is respected by his colleagues for his always positive, friendly attitude and kindness. We celebrate you Hattingh not only for your exceptional wines, but also your humanity. Cheers to a stellar contribution!
Beautiful barrels loading...
On this day, exactly 329 years ago our beloved co-founder Ansela van de Caab was emancipated on 28 June 1695. The latest vintage of our flagship Bordeaux Blend named in her honour recently completed malolactic fermentation and was put into barrels to begin its long maturation process. For this ultra-premium wine we only use the finest new French barrels with varying grains and toastings for added complexity. Ageing takes place over about 22 months with continuous tastings by the winemakers to ensure the sweet spot of seamless integration between oak and fruit is reached.
Still a few spots left to book your event at winter rates.
We still have a few winter dates available for corporate or private functions in our various venues. The Muratie cellar, restaurant and patio can each accommodate a maximum of 80 guests and our Canvas venue, 300 guests. For a smaller meeting space or private tasting, book our Story Room with availability for up to 12 guests. Talk to our team to customise the perfect menu for your event. For more information and bookings, contact [email protected].
