A harvest update and Q&A with our winemaker, Simon Smith 🍇🍷
"2024 was definitely the earliest and quickest harvest of my 35-year winemaking career. We started on the 18th of January with Chardonnay Cap Classique base wine and finished off on the 6th of March. This results in fruity, healthy wines with low pH levels. The white wines boasts beautiful clean, fresh fruit, while the reds are undergoing acidity adjustments and barrel aging. Overall, it's shaping up to be a good harvest year with beautiful wines and it seems winter will arrive early too."
Q&A:
Q: What was Harvest 2024 like, any highs, any challenges?
A: “This was my earliest ever harvest. The quality is good. A challenge was to bring all of the grapes in quickly enough. Our last day of picking was on the 8th of March.”
Q: Do you think we are in for 24 to be a favourable vintage for both whites and reds?
A: “The reds have very good colour and analysis due to the early harvest. The white wines are very flavourful for the same reasons.”
Q: What is next in the cellar over autumn?
A: “At the moment we are getting ready for bottling of the new vintages of almost out of stock wines, the Chavant and Sauvignon Blanc. We are also taking the 2023 reds from the barrels and putting the 2024 red wines in the barrels.”
We also asked Simon which of his current wines he most enjoyed to drink throughout harvest. He answered with: "Choosing my favourite wine would be like choosing my favourite child, it's simply not done."
We are very excited for the 2024 wines 🍷🥂

OUR HISTORY
Louisvale is situated at the foot of the majestic Stellenbosch mountains in verdant Devon Valley. Our lush, manicured vineyards produce outstanding wines, particularly Chardonnay for which we have won many awards. Louisvale, one of the pioneers of Chardonnay in South Africa, is still solely planted to Chardonnay albeit different Davis clones.
The vineyards are all east-facing and planted in an east-west direction. The Bottelary Hill to the west offers welcome shade in the peak of summer when the sun sets behind it allowing for slower ripening and richer fruit development. Deep, well-drained Hutton and Clovelly decomposed granite soils ensure that the vineyards remain ‘dryland’ until after the harvest, after which the vines are irrigated.
All Louisvale grapes are hand-harvested and the vineyard blocks are treated separately. Since 1994, the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes have been sourced from the neighbouring vineyard, where the wine maker partners with the owner in managing the vines to Louisvale’s exact specifications. By doing this, he has ensured that the red wines have retained their Louisvale character.
