πββοΈImportance of swimming lessons and the danger of flotation devicesπββοΈ
Swimming is an important life skill that all children should learn early on. It is the only sport that can save your childβs life. While you might be able to teach them the basics of swimming yourself, class lessons help to build up strength and endurance, teach your child to swim long distances, swim underwater, and also build lifesaving skills like swimming while wearing clothing, swimming underwater, and rescuing others.
In the WHOβs (World Health Organisation) 2014 global report on drowning, swim aids were NOT included in their list of the top 10 actions to prevent drowning. Because people still can drown in swim aids.
8 in 10 child drownings happen in front of parents. Think about this statistic. Shocking.
πββοΈThe benefits of swimming lessonsπββοΈ
π€Health - Swimming is one of the best types of exercise as it works every muscle group in the body without putting stress on bones and joints. For children, it is a brilliant way to burn off pent-up energy, and the swimming pool is a safe environment as they are supervised by you constantly (hopefully). Instilling the importance of leading an active and healthy lifestyle in children is vital as it will stay with them for life.
π€Social Skills - Swimming classes are held in groups of children of a similar age and ability. They will make friends and have fun in a different environment to the classroom or home.
π€Safety - Learning to swim is hugely important to ensure your child is safe around water. There are many situations when your child might come into contact with water throughout their lives, and unless they learn to swim, they will be in danger.
π€Life skill - Swimming is an important life skill that will bring a lifetime of pleasurable experiences. Boat trips, beach or resort holidays, pool parties, water sports, snorkeling, SCUBA diving, and the list goes on. All of these experiences require the ability to swim, and as your child gets older, they could find themselves excluded from such activities if they cannot swim.
π€Competitiveness - Swimming classes instill a competitive streak in children as they strive to achieve more and compete amongst their peers. This is an important character trait that will help them in various environments in school and even later in life at work.
π€Fun and enjoyment - Many children enjoy splashing around in the water. You will hear children squealing with delight as they explore a water world of fun and entertainment. Swimming can also be an excellent opportunity to spend quality time with your child.
πββοΈWhat is the right age to take your child for swimming lessons?πββοΈ
You can start introducing your babies to water when they are about 6 months old. It is, however, recommended to start swimming lessons at the age of one year. Many say that when a child learns to walk, they should learn to swim. Many swim schools have classes for younger babies, which can only benefit them. They won't yet know to swim, but these can help them start to learn about water safety. This will also prevent the fear of water. It is never too late to start as well, as even adults that canβt swim will benefit from lessons.
πββοΈHow long will it take to learn how to swim?πββοΈ
Each child is different. Consistency is key. If you take your child to classes regularly, they will learn faster than the child who misses classes. It is never good to force a child to learn how to swim. Once your child has had a bad experience with swimming, it takes more time to overcome the fear of water.
πββοΈWhat if your child cries during lessons?πββοΈ
This is very common, but donβt give up too soon. You might think you enrolled your child too early or your child is not ready. It is a new environment, and they first need to get used to the teacher in the water. Often lessons are in a group, and it is children that they donβt know. Some children adapt quickly, but others will eventually overcome their fears.
πββοΈHow to choose a good swim schoolπββοΈ
πVisit the swim school before enrolling your child and meet the instructors. Ask for their swimming training qualifications and experience. Preferably they need to be registered with Swimming South Africa.
πEnsure the instructors have first-aid and CPR training.
πAsk to observe a class in which your child would be taught. See if you like their teaching style, age-appropriateness, and whether your child will fit in there.
πLook out for the patience and temperament of the instructor and see if it would be a good fit for your child.
πTake note of the number of children in the class. Preferably there shouldnβt be more than 4-6 kids per instructor.
πTake note of changing facilities and toilets and see how they maintain their hygiene.
πCheck the clarity and hygiene of the pool and surrounds.
πCheck that the pool is appropriately heated. Small children will dislike lessons if the water is too cold.
πββοΈ What about swim aids? πββοΈ
The best swim aid you can buy your child is swimming lessons. Other swim aids like pollyotters, puddle jumpers, arm floaties, and other floating devices on the market create a false sense of security in the child and parent. Other risks of them include:
πThey can tip the child over and keep the child vertical but upside down in the water.
πYour child can slip out of them.
πThey can have a puncture and not keep your child afloat.
πThey can teach your child improper swimming habits. Your child needs a horizontal swimming posture, and some of these aids create a vertical swimming position, which is actually the drowning position.
πThey donβt learn the proper back-floating maneuver, which may be lifesaving in a dangerous situation in the water.
πIt might create a false sense of confidence in the child, thinking they can swim, and then they jump in the pool without the aid.
The only approved flotation device a child should wear is an age-appropriate life jacket to prevent them from drowning in case they fall in around water and should not be used for casual swimming.
πββοΈ So, how does my little one swim for fun without a floatation device? πββοΈ
Take them for swimming lessons from a young age. Please get in the pool with them, play with them and stay there. Easy as that.
Swimming is more than just a fun pastime to enjoy during the summer months. By signing up your child for swimming lessons, children are not only taking part in a fun, physical activity, but they are also learning important lessons about water safety.
