The new SI number 85 of Cooperatives will bring sanity in the Cooperatives movement

1. On the 31st of December 2022, the Minister of Small and Medium Enterprise Development signed a new Statutory Instrument number 85 that requires that Cooperatives fees for registration and annual returns submission must be adjusted upwards and be done at a fee respectively among other fees.

2. Unlike the way it used to be done where annual returns submission used to be submitted at camp officer level without a fee to the Treasury.

3. The new law requires that submission should be done online through the Smart Zambia portal at a prescribed fee of 100 kwacha and late submission is charged at a penalty.

4. The move will not only increase revenue to the treasure but will help in ensuring that Cooperatives at both level hold their Annual General Meeting as prescribed in the Cooperative Societies Act of 1998 for the progress Cooperative Movement in Zambia.

COOPERATIVE AWARENESS AND CAPACITY BUILDING KEY TO SUSTAINABLE AND ENTERPRISING COOPERATIVE SOCIETIES
A recent reports for the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises under the Registrar of Co-operative shows that the Registrar of Cooperatives has registered over 30, 000 Co-operative in the last three quarters of 2022 exceeding the estimated target of representing an increase of 36% as compared to the same period last year which has brought to 130,000 Total number of Co-operatives registered in Zambia with an average of 2,000,000 individual members.

The increase in registration can be attributed to the increase in the number of possible beneficiaries under programmes such as the enhanced agriculture support program as well as communities wanting to benefit from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) or the Citizen Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) and other financing opportunities the Country has to offer.

This increase in registration and the available opportunities will require all stakeholders including Government to design intensive public awareness campaigns and capacity building programs on the importance of Cooperative Entrepreneurship that will stand the test of time by way of ensuring that members and their Cooperative’s capacities are built through training and information provision so as to run as organized businesses where roles and responsibilities are understood by Co-operative members, staff and key stakeholders in Co-operatives, the promotion programmes have capacity to achieve the Countries development agenda which is to see people and their enterprise achieve success and this can only be done by constantly building Co-operative understanding among citizens.

For Zambia to have a vibrant Co-operative Movement it needs to build strong partnerships around Cooperative stakeholders to conduct promotions, training and information dissemination programmes on what a Co-operative is and sharing case studies from local, regional and international successful stories and challenges.

When you are in towns like Mumbwa on the access road to rural areas, what will greet you mostly in the morning is traffic on those roads during this season. You might be thinking that people are going for a burial looking at the number of people you ll find on vehicles(mostly canters), But ofcourse what will make you realize that they are not are people sitting on top of the stocked bags.
They are enroute into town to search for an on spot cash market for the produce to meet their daily needs.
Per bag one is charged 20 Kwacha on average plus per individual that's about K 50. That's the transportation costs incurred but we have to look at food and other costs because the person will spend the whole day in town that day.
A Lesson can be drawn from ants that intends to build an anthill. Usually ants work together to meet the main objective/goals.
We need mindset change for our farmers so that the can see value for their hard earned produce and work together in the said example.
Cost can be reduced that could help them save and buy more of their essential needs and bargain for a better price thats if Cooperative members are willing to utilize Community Cooperative markets Enterprises for their benefits.

BREAKING NEWS: ZCF Cuts The Price Of Mealie Meal To K90!

This morning, the Zambia Co-operative Federation (ZCF) delivered mealie meal in Chawama at Patuka General Dealers going at an incredible price of K110 for Breakfast and K90 for Roller.

Currently, a 25kg is fetching as much as K150 in conversional supermarkets, a price government believes is inflated.

In 2017, ZCF started installing solar-powered hammermills under the Presidential Milling Initiative. President Lungu said Government would work with ZCF to help reduce the price of mealie-meal.

This delivery in Chawama is the first real practical example in recent times of this progressive initiative.

Tell us your area and how much mealie meal is fetching there!

PROFIT + is the flagship project under U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Feed the Future (FTF) Strategy for Zambia and is USAID’s largest agricultural program in Zambia. PROFIT+ uses a value chain approach to increase the competitiveness of selected agricultural products, enhance access to finance, and stimulate innovation and private sector investment. Targeted value chains are soya beans, groundnuts, sunflower, maize, tomatoes and onions. ACDI/VOCA is the implementing partner for the PROFIT+ project.

PROFIT+ focuses on the market opportunities that exist in each chain, targeting value chain actors and other stakeholders with capacity to improve market intelligence so that awareness of the product specifications demanded in the market is created, and ensure availability of products meeting those specifications. Market linkage models that link specific actors in transactions, using mechanisms like forward contracting, embedded services and value chain financing that allow industry stakeholders to transact more efficiently and profitably, promote the competitive qualities of key Zambian agricultural products.

The Zambia Cooperative Federation (ZCF) is the apex body, and therefore a secretariat for the Cooperative movement in Zambia whose focus is that of promoting Co-operative participation in the whole Agriculture value chain from production of raw materials (inputs), storage, primary and secondary processing, marketing, wholesaling and retailing.

ACDI/VOCA is a private, non-profit organization that promotes broad-based economic growth, higher living standards and vibrant communities in low-income countries and emerging democracies by providing sustainable solutions to the most pressing and intractable development problems using integrated approaches from our five practice areas: Agribusiness, Community Development, Enterprise Development, Financial Services, and Food Security.
