What you should know about Viral Conjunctivitis

Viral conjunctivitis is a highly contagious acute conjunctival infection usually caused by an adenovirus. Symptoms include irritation, photophobia, and watery discharge. Diagnosis is clinical; sometimes viral cultures or immunodiagnostic testing is indicated. Infection is self-limited, but severe cases sometimes require topical corticosteroids.

3 Benefits of Visiting Your Eye Emergency Doctor
An eye emergency can arise anytime, anywhere. Luckily, most conditions are more effectively treated when they are diagnosed quickly. That’s why it’s so important to visit your eye emergency doctor if you have experienced an ocular injury or any sudden changes to your eyesight.

Here are 3 benefits of visiting your eye emergency doctor:

1. They Can Help Protect Against Vision Loss
Sudden changes in vision are a cause for significant concern and because the causes of this are almost endless, it’s critical to get evaluated quickly by your eye doctor. He/she can determine the cause and initiate treatment if necessary.

Remember: Some conditions require intervention within hours to effectively restore visual acuity so if you are experiencing sudden vision loss or any other changes in your vision, visit your emergency eye doctor immediately so they can take care of it quickly.

2. They Can Treat Eye Infections
Do you have an irritated, red, or teary eye? This could be an indication of viral or bacterial conjunctivitis, but there are also other conditions that mimic pink eye. Therefore, it’s key to visit your optometrist early on so they can:

Identify the true source of the problem
Effectively control the infection
Quickly restore your eye health and clarity of vision
Your Calgary eye doctor will be knowledgeable about the benefits and disadvantages of certain medications and can help choose the one that is best suited for your specific situation.

3. They Can Remove A Foreign Body
A foreign body is defined as anything in the eye that is not supposed to be there. This can range from a dust particle or chemical substance to a metal shard. If you do have something embedded in your eye, NEVER try to remove it. This could cause more serious damage.

Your optometrist is experienced and trained to handle such situations and they will be able to locate the foreign body, remove it, and provide any necessary treatment to restore your ocular health.

What are the symptoms of diabetic eye problems?

In the early stages, diabetic eye problems usually don't have any symptoms. That's why regular dilated eye exams are so important, even if you think your eyes are healthy.

You should also watch for sudden changes in your vision that could mean an emergency. Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these symptoms:

Many new spots or dark wavy strings floating in your vision (floaters)
Flashes of light
A dark shadow over part of your vision, like a curtain
Vision loss
Eye pain or redness

Talk with your doctor if you have these symptoms, even if they come and go:

Spots or dark wavy strings floating in your vision
Blurry or wavy vision
Vision that changes a lot
Trouble seeing colors

How are diabetic eye problems diagnosed?
Eye doctors do dilated eye exams to diagnose eye problems. A dilated eye exam uses eye drops to open your pupils wide so your doctor can look for signs of eye problems and treat them before they harm your vision. Your doctor will also test your vision and measure the pressure in your eyes.

What is eye strain?

Eye strain is a common condition caused by intense use of your eyes, such as by reading, using digital devices or driving long distances. Other names for eye strain are eye fatigue and asthenopia.

Eye strain can cause discomfort, but it’s usually not a serious condition. Plus, there are many things you can do to reduce or prevent eye strain. If you can’t relieve your eye strain with some lifestyle changes, including the use of artificial tears, there’s a chance that it may be a symptom of something more serious than eye fatigue. That’s why getting an eye exam is always a good idea.

Types of eye strain
In recent years, the main common cause of eye strain is the extended use of computers or other digital devices, such as cell phones or tablets. The term for this type of eye strain is digital eye strain.

Eye strain can be temporary or long-lasting.

How are itchy eyes treated?

It is important to see your pharmacist or optometrist to work out the cause of your itchy eyes.

Itching caused by an allergy can be helped with antihistamine or anti-inflammatory eye drops. It can help to use artificial tears (eye drops designed to lubricate dry eyes) to wash away any allergens on the surface of your eye. Sometimes you may need to take an oral antihistamine.

If you have something in your eye, try to wash it out with warm water or a saline solution. If that doesn’t work, you should see a doctor within 24 hours.

Itchy eyes self-help

Relieve the itching by placing a clean, cold, damp washcloth or an ice pack over your closed eyes. You can also try bathing your eyes with cold water. Try not to rub your eyes because this will make the itching worse and could damage them.

If you have dry eye, make the air as humid as possible by placing bowls of water around the room.

Can itchy eyes be prevented?

If the itching is caused by an allergy, identify what you are allergic to and remove it. Your doctor can help you and may refer you to a specialist immunologist or allergist if a more complicated assessment is needed. For example, house dust mites and pet fur are common triggers. You should also talk to your doctor about whether changing your medicines could help prevent itchy eyes.

Try to avoid things that can irritate the eyes, such as dry air, wind, pollen, cigarette smoke, dust, chemicals, strong smells, or staring at a screen for a long time. Make a conscious effort to blink more often to lubricate your eyes.

Always use hypoallergenic products near your eyes and use eye protection to prevent pollen, dust or sand from getting into your eyes. Eating a diet with plenty of vitamin A and omega-3 fatty acids can also help.

BAD BREATH

You know how embarrassing this problem can be if you have chronic bad breath. Instead of temporarily masking the odour with breath mints, gum, and other freshening products, please get to the root of this unpleasant condition and eliminate it once and for all. Start by getting an accurate diagnosis from your dentist. Once you know the specific cause of your bad breath, you can address it while keeping up with your excellent oral care habits.
What Is Causing Your Halitosis?
Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is characterized by an unpleasant oral odour. This can make simple things like having a close conversation with someone a source of embarrassment and anxiety. Brushing and flossing can help by removing germs and other substances that can create a foul smell from the mouth. What if you still experience symptoms, even with good oral hygiene?
Determining the cause of bad breath can be tricky without the help of a healthcare professional because there are so many possible causes. Simple factors, such as the nature of your eating habits or poor dental hygiene, can lead to halitosis. Other oral health issues, such as the dry mouth and gum disease, can also be the culprit. Moreover, in some cases, chronic bad breath can indicate a serious health problem, such as a respiratory infection or problems with the liver or kidneys. To find out what is causing the problem, make an appointment with your dentist. After examining your mouth and discussing your habits and medical history, he or she can give you a diagnosis and refer you to your family physician or another medical professional if necessary.

HOW TO PREVENT CATARACTS

No studies have proved how to prevent cataracts or slow the progression of cataracts. But doctors think several strategies may be helpful, including:

Have regular eye examinations. Eye examinations can help detect cataracts and other eye problems at their earliest stages. Ask your doctor how often you should have an eye examination.

Quit smoking. Ask your doctor for suggestions about how to stop smoking. Medications, counseling and other strategies are available to help you.
Manage other health problems. Follow your treatment plan if you have diabetes or other medical conditions that can increase your risk of cataracts.

Choose a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables. Adding a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables to your diet ensures that you're getting many vitamins and nutrients. Fruits and vegetables have many antioxidants, which help maintain the health of your eyes.

Studies haven't proved that antioxidants in pill form can prevent cataracts. But a large population study recently showed that a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals was associated with a reduced risk of developing cataracts. Fruits and vegetables have many proven health benefits and are a safe way to increase the amount of minerals and vitamins in your diet.

Wear sunglasses. Ultraviolet light from the sun may contribute to the development of cataracts. Wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet B (UVB) rays when you're outdoors.

Reduce alcohol use. Excessive alcohol use can increase the risk of cataracts.

CONJUNCTIVITIS

Pink eye (conjunctivitis) is an inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane (conjunctiva) that lines your eyelid and covers the white part of your eyeball. When small blood vessels in the conjunctiva become inflamed, they're more visible. This is what causes the whites of your eyes to appear reddish or pink.
Pink eye is commonly caused by a bacterial or viral infection, an allergic reaction, or — in babies — an incompletely opened tear duct.
Though pink eye can be irritating, it rarely affects your vision. Treatments can help ease the discomfort of pink eye. Because pink eye can be contagious, early diagnosis and treatment can help limit its spread.

Symptoms
The most common pink eye symptoms include:
• Redness in one or both eyes
• Itchiness in one or both eyes
• A gritty feeling in one or both eyes
• A discharge in one or both eyes that forms a crust during the night that may prevent your eye or eyes from opening in the morning
• Tearing

WHAT’S THE LINK BETWEEN GUM DISEASE, GINGIVITIS AND PERIODONTITIS?

When you’re concerned about your gums and start researching, it quickly gets confusing, with multiple technical medical terms being used to refer to the same thing - gum disease.

Here’s how the terms are linked:

Gum disease is the broad-stroke, general term used to describe the bacterial infection in your mouth. Both gingivitis and periodontitis are words used to describe gum disease - but the words are not interchangeable and do not mean exactly the same thing9. Gingivitis describes early, mild (and reversible) gum disease, the kind marked by red, swollen gums that bleed easily when brushed or flossed.

If gingivitis is not addressed by improved mouth care, it can progress and develop into the more serious (non-reversible) stage of gum disease called periodontitis, which attacks gums, bone and the connective tissue that holds teeth in place, eventually loosening them over time to the point that they could fall out. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. That’s why it’s best to address gum issues early by hammering down.

WHAT IS A CATARACT?

A cataract is a dense, cloudy area that forms in the lens of the eye. A cataract begins when proteins in the eye form clumps that prevent the lens from sending clear images to the retina. The retina works by converting the light that comes through the lens into signals. It sends the signals to the optic nerve, which carries them to the brain.

It develops slowly and eventually interferes with your vision. You might end up with cataracts in both eyes, but they usually don’t form at the same time. Cataracts are common in older people.

WHAT IS MYOPIA?

Myopia (nearsightedness) is a refractive error that causes blurry distance vision. It is the most common cause of impaired vision in people under the age of 40. Myopia usually begins in childhood, but it can continue to worsen into early adulthood. This is called myopia progression.

Almost half of the children with progressive myopia reach a stable prescription by age 15. About three-quarters stabilize by age 18, and almost all stabilize by age 24. However, myopia can progress rapidly to become high myopia without proper management. High myopia can lead to sight-threatening complications in adulthood

WHAT CAUSES MYOPIA?

Myopia (nearsightedness) occurs when the eye focuses light rays in front of the retina, instead of on the retina. This makes distant objects look blurry.

A few different factors contribute to focusing light properly onto the retina:

The length of the eye from front to back

The shape of the cornea and lens

The location of the lens and the cornea relative to each other inside the eye

Small variations in any of these factors can cause myopia.

What are cavities?

Cavities are permanently damaged areas in the hard surface of your teeth that develop into tiny openings or holes. Cavities, also called tooth decay or caries, are caused by a combination of factors, including bacteria in your mouth, frequent snacking, sipping sugary drinks and not cleaning your teeth well.

Cavities and tooth decay are among the world's most common health problems. They're especially common in children, teenagers and older adults. But anyone who has teeth can get cavities, including infants.

If cavities aren't treated, they get larger and affect deeper layers of your teeth. They can lead to a severe toothache, infection and tooth loss. Regular dental visits and good brushing and flossing habits are your best protection against cavities and tooth decay.
