Bulawayo leather cluster embraces IPR
31 Oct, 2022 - 00:10
The Chronicle
Nqobile Bhebhe, Senior Business Reporter
THE Bulawayo Leather Cluster expects to realise more business value from embracing Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) following capacitation from the Support to the Industrialisation and Production Sectors (SIPS) programme.
The intervention seeks to equip small to medium enterprises with the knowledge to harness the full value of trademarks and patents of their innovations.
SIPS is supported by the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development (BMZ) to enhance the expansion of regional value chains and promote dialogue between the private and public sectors.
Representatives of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the leather industry from Southern Africa including Bulawayo, participated in a regional capacity-building training workshop on strengthening regional and national IPR and Trade Related Intellectual Property Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) compliance.
Most innovations in various sectors including the leather industry are not being turned into intellectual property hence lagging in terms of gains from innovations.
Bulawayo Leather Cluster secretary-general, Mr Fungai Zvinondiramba, said SMEs have many innovations, which they have not registered and are not fully benefiting from their products.
He said the programme will help to strengthen the value chains in the leather sector across the region.
“On the just ended training, it was about intellectual property rights for SMEs. As you might know, most SMEs have not realised the value of their intellectual property.
“These include trademarks and patents. SMEs have come up with a lot of innovations, which they have not registered, there are also opportunities for developing GIs which create brands based on geographical indications.
“In other quarters it’s called geographical branding where we brand a whole region or province for its unique product.”
A GI is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.
Mr Zvinondiramba said after the training programme there was a realisation that there are opportunities for collective branding for SMEs
“Benefits include the realisation of the invisible value of the different names that we have built over the years, and of course the knowledge that we can protect our products and innovations in Zimbabwe and the region even internationally,” he said.
Mr Zvinondiramba said through the SIPS and ALLPI initiatives, SMEs in the leather industry were being capacitated with machines through a clustering system in Bulawayo and Harare.
At its prime in the 1990s, the sector was thriving producing up to eight million pairs of shoes, but most established manufacturing firms later folded citing different factors.
However, with Government interventions that included the launch of the Zimbabwe Leather Sector Strategy (2021-2030) to anchor increased investments and maximising value-addition and beneficiation to promote export-led industrialisation, the sector is now on a recovery path.
The Government also hopes that guided by the new strategy, the leather sector would increasingly lobby for the development and reform of 70 percent of the identified policies and legal frameworks for the transformation of the sector by 2030.

ETHIOPIAN Airlines yesterday made its maiden flight to Bulawayo as it landed at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport, a key development in the aviation industry that will boost the tourism sector and ease international travel.
The airline arrived on schedule to a spectacular traditional water cannon salute.
The airline, which already flies into Zimbabwe through Harare and Victoria Falls, is set to provide service four times a week from Addis Ababa to Bulawayo through Victoria Falls.
The coming of more international airlines is testimony to the positive impact of Zimbabwe’s Open Skies Policy, which enhances the country’s attractiveness to potential investors.
When the Second Republic came into being in 2017, just three airlines were utilising the country’s airspace. Now more than 18 airlines are flying into the country.
Vintage cars escorted the Ethiopian Airline soon after landing for the first time at the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport in Bulawayo yesterday
Speaking at the welcome ceremony, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Engineer Theodius Chinyanga said the Ethiopian Airline will aid in increasing economic growth in the country.
“We are cognisant of the critical role that air transport plays in the economic development of our country.
“The coming in of Ethiopian Airlines to JM International Airport will, without a doubt, spur on and encourage more exciting ground-breaking investment and trade ventures in other downstream sectors of our economy to the benefit of the nation.”
He stressed the need to embrace and utilise the opportunity provided by Ethiopian Airlines to grow tourism, trade, attract foreign direct investments, and create beneficial business relationships with the world.
The permanent secretary said the ministry will endeavour to increase connectivity, not only with the continent of Africa but with the rest of the world in line with the Government’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) focusing on the realisation of the country’s vision of transforming Zimbabwe into an Upper-Middle Income Economy by 2030.
Before Ethiopian Airlines came to Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport, the only other international flight in and out of the airport was to Johannesburg in South Africa, which is operated by Airlink.
“Therefore, with the coming in of this flight from Addis Ababa, we now have increased the connectivity between Bulawayo and the rest of the continent and the world at large,” said the permanent secretary.
The airline’s chief commercial officer, Mr Lemma Yadesga Gudeta expressed confidence that the airline will facilitate easy international access by increasing connectivity.
“Our new flight to Bulawayo creates even stronger socio-economic ties between Ethiopia and Zimbabwe. It also has a significant role in international accessibility and boosts the country’s tourism sector.”
In a statement, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr Mesfin Tasew, said the Bulawayo route will enhance international connectivity and facilitate trade within Africa and beyond.
“The commencement of flights to Bulawayo is crucial in connecting Southern Africa to the world with our 130 destinations in five continents. We are glad to serve Bulawayo, the industrial hub of Zimbabwe and Southern Africa, accelerating trade with our cargo and passenger services. Our flights to multiple cities in a country indicate our solid commitment to serve our customers and support our continent as the best pan-African carrier,” said Mr Tasew.
He said Ethiopian Airlines’ growing connectivity is backing the utilisation of the huge potential of the continent’s tourism industry.
“The new flight to Bulawayo will add convenience to travellers, thereby activating the trade activities in the industrial hub of southern Africa.”
Recently, Ethiopian Airlines was the official carrier for the international buyers and journalists who attended this year’s Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo, after they entered into a partnership with Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA).
Zimbabwe has witnessed increased interest from various airlines in recent years, with some, including Emirates, increasing flight frequency while others, including Germany’s Eurowings Discover airline and RwandAir entering the country’s air space.
The renewed interest in Zimbabwe as a destination is a show of confidence in the local tourism industry, and aviation market in general, by foreign airlines and the international community.
Authorities have attributed the growing interest in the country by foreign airlines to improved aviation infrastructure.

SMEs seek access to insurance services
31 Oct, 2022 - 00:10

Sikhulekelani Moyo, Business Reporter
THE Micro, Small to Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) says engagement with insurance service providers is critical in facilitating enhanced access to affordable social security schemes that protect small businesses and provide friendly banking operations.
Bulawayo MSMEs programme co-ordinator, Mr Nketha Mangoye Dlamini, said at the moment there were no specific insurance products suitable for SMEs.
He said it was for this reason that representatives from their sector have started engaging different insurance service providers to come up with flexible schemes for the informal sector.
Mr Dlamini said SMEs do not retire early but after retirement, they need some financial backup just like in other departments and to achieve this every business operator must have social security cover.
“We have been doing some exercises to handle the insurance issue on pensions and to ensure products and places where SMEs are operating their businesses are covered,” said Mr Dlamini.
“We are in discussion with different insurance service providers where some are trying to introduce pension schemes for SMEs. There is no product taking care of micro, small and medium enterprises.”
Mr Dlamini went on to say pensions are also important to SMEs as they can be used as collateral in accessing funds for the growth of their businesses.
“It’s easier for service providers to deal with registered formalised entities, be it vendors or SMEs. This will also assist in knowing their place of work and type of businesses they are into and it becomes easier for the insurance service providers,” he said.
During the 2023 national budget consultation held early this month, Bulawayo Vendors and Traders Association (BVTA) urged the Government to craft a national budget that would establish subsidised insurance, medical aid and pension schemes for players in the informal sector.
The association said the schemes would be targeted at cushioning traders in the informal sector from social and economic vulnerabilities as the sector has unique characteristics that need to be attended to.
Commenting on the BVTA suggestion, Bulawayo Chamber of SMEs chairman Mr Costin Ngwenya said SMEs are exposed when it comes to insurance and security schemes as they are beyond their reach.
“Government can provide the subsidised schemes. However, it should not be its responsibility alone, the private sector through the traditional providers of these schemes should go back to the drawing board and come out with tailor-made schemes, which should be affordable and sustainable to SMEs,” said Mr Ngwenya.
“We have other organisations like Econet, through EcoLife they have introduced a pension scheme for the SMEs, the scheme is affordable and sustainable and I am encouraging the SMEs to take advantage of it.”
Early this year, the National Social Security Authority (Nssa) prepared similar recommendations to the Government for a social security scheme for the informal sector.
National Security Authority (Nssa)
The proposed scheme is in line with Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 1 and is part of Nssa’s contribution to a prosperous upper middle-income economy by 2030.
Under the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), the blueprint that guides the country’s development between 2021 to 2025, unlocking the potential of SMEs is one of the critical steps towards fostering inclusive economic transformation.
SMEs have become dominant economic players in Zimbabwe but a majority of them still operate informally. It is for this reason that the Government has sought to prioritise the development of SMEs and facilitate their formalisation. —
