Over two decades the artist has been photographing in and around his hometown of Buffalo, New York, crafting the series of photographs seen here. King, Queen, Knave is an idiosyncratic vision of a city amidst its contradictions, defying familiar narratives of post-industrial decline and embracing an enigmatic strain of reality verging on surrealism.

💥Rediscover Nomad by Julia Borissova

www.anzenbergergallery-bookshop.com

Referring to the idea of a nomad and using photography as a visual research method, I consider image production as the engagement and embodiment of memory. I explore the nomadic thinking through a reflexive photographic process, which seems to me an echo of the surrounding space that creates a connection with it both distant and close.'' — Julia Borissova

Living Apart by Ian Berry

In the post-war period, the government gradually developed a policy that was meant to retain forever the rights and privileges of a white minority: apartheid. Racial prejudices and tensions may create difficulties in many societies, but only in South Africa was segregation actually institutionalized and regulated.
The results were tragic and disturbing. This aspect of the South African history, the 'duty' to 'live apart' while occupying the same space, has been uniquely recorded by the camera of Ian Berry.

📚From the Shelves🪿🌼 GOOSEWALK by Regina Anzenberger

https://anzenbergergallery-bookshop.com/book/2105/goosewalk_(signed_-_last_copies)-regina_anzenberger

Just as the ashes of the recently deceased dog, Shakeera, were about to be scattered around her favorite place, a large white swan appeared in the sky. “Is this the reincarnation of our beloved white dog?“ the artist and her 13-year-old dog sitter, Leila, wondered, sadly. But as it turned out later, it’s the goose, not the swan, who is the inspiration for and main protagonist of this book.

Goosewalk tells the story of a slaughterhouse-runaway goose who settled on a golf course and has been accepted by three wild geese. It has not been a coincidence that they landed at a golf course because geese can only eat short grass. Here she lives in freedom, although still protected, endlessly being served freshly mowed grass on a platter. Only the winters are lonely, when the wild geese fly south. But come spring, the birds happily reunite on the same pond.

💥FROM THE SHELVES💥 AMMA by Vasantha Yogananthan

www.anzenbergergallery-bookshop.com

Jurors‘ mention Aperture Paris Photo Book Awards WINNER!

A Myth of Two Souls (2013-2021) is inspired by the epic tale The Ramayana. Drawing inspiration from the imagery associated with this and its in everyday Indian life, Vasantha Yogananthan has retraced the legendary route from to India to Sri Lanka. First recorded by the around 300 BC, The Ramayana has been continuously rewritten and reinterpreted, and continues to evolve today. Yogananthan’s series is informed by the notion of a journey in time and space and offers a modern retelling of the tale.

The seventh and last chapter, Amma (‘Mother’ in Tamil language) closes the project A Myth of Two Souls, after 437 pictures published over seven books (2016-2021). To celebrate this epic saga, Chose Commune releases a very special book in close collaboration with the artist — a book with 60 photographs tipped-in by hand (printed and bound in Italy).

Amma is centered around the and deals with the concept of ‘purity’. By no means a happy ending, the closure of The Ramayana forces us to question Rama’s behaviour and his obedience to rules set by a patriarchal society. On the other hand, Sita’s beliefs and actions are free from culture. Sita means furrow in sanskrit, she is the daughter of the Earth.

The pictures composing take us from the seacoast of Sri Lanka, to the city of Ayodhya to the jungle of Bihar, India. Their chromatic scale recreate a world where civilization gradually disappears to leave room to a purely metaphysical space. The has neither end nor beginning. It represents the circle of life and therefore it will always be.

💥📚BOOK OF THE DAY🚂

This Train by Justine Kurland (signed book + print)

www.anzenbergergallery-bookshop.com

This new publication from Justine Kurland presents two interwoven narratives drawn from the road trips across the United States that she undertook with her young child between the years 2005 and 2010. The first thread is a sequence of arresting large-format photographs of her child and herself, disentangled from the renowned images of roads, trains, infrastructure, and fellow travelers Kurland was making at the same time. Revisiting these photographs, Kurland suggests a clarified reading of them as an anti-history of family and travel, upending the conventional family album to tell a story of q***r motherhood and image-making in step with Kurland’s maternal line, for whom crossing the American landscape was a matter of dire necessity.

On the other side of this unspooling concertina publication are Kurland’s photographs of the railroads which traverse the American landscape. Deconstructing the familiar mythology of the railway as a pioneering symbol of modernity, these images observe the reality of the ways these routes carve and stain the landscape, often overwhelmed by surrounding nature, leaving behind barren strips of sun-stained asphalt and eerily perfect parallel tracks. Bookended by new texts from Constance Debré and Lily Cho, This Train treats the as the fabricated tableau that it is, a cultural fable which conceals histories of Chinese migrant labor and the human cost of freedom. Kurland re-appraises an interwoven set of paradigms which retain a tenacious grip on contemporary American life: the nuclear family, the open road, the violence of expansion, and the intractable force of the land itself.
