It is RU OK? day today. Please reach out to your friends, family and these various organisations to gain support and & others.
It was a privilege to share my experiences on this podcast. Hopefully we can all feel more able to share how we are really doing.
I am also doing a fundraiser for the Black Dog institute in the upcoming Adelaide Lumary City to Bay fun run. That was inspired by someone I know who died by su***de only 6 weeks ago. https://citybay22.grassrootz.com/blackdoginstitute/melinda-hull
In recognition of RUOK Day on Thursday 8th September, four members of SPA’s Early Career Reference Group – Brianna Tuckerman, Vivienne Hui, Davina Lo and Julie Sax – explore sources of stress and burn out in speech pathology and how to manage it at four different points along the speech pathology career journey – student, early career, mid-career and later-career.
The group chat to Brittany Fong, Bridget Forrester, Rebecca Reinking and Melinda Hull.

It is a privilege to work as a Speech Pathologist.
I work with so many great children, parents, grandparents, carers, and kindy and school support staff. They all care about building up the child's communication abilities.
Let's all be patient and supportive of those who need more time to get their message across. Their voice/message is important.
Early intervention is also very important. Please don't wait to seek support if you have any concerns over your child's development. We'd much rather you see a Speech pathologist who may say 'they are age-appropriate' OR "yes, they need extra communication support"; rather than delay that support because someone has told you 'they'll grow out of it.'
The topic of burnout has been on my mind. I will soon share some of my experiences in the SPA podcast "Speak Up". I took these photos today because it reminded me of Sunday afternoon when I needed to spend time in my garden in order to have 'down time' and look after my mental health. It was refreshing, restoring and good 'burnout prevention/management'.
I also love this view from my desk. Sometimes I watch birds eat nectar from the flowers. Such a simple pleasure to watch.
I love working with speech sound disorders!
I love the range from easier to harder cases. Many of my clients have complex cases of both phonological disorder and Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS).
I’m still learning about CAS, and will continue to learn. I didn’t realise how much I’ve learnt over past 4 to 6 years until recently in 2022 when therapists ask me to provide supervision or assist in assessment with complex speech clients, especially around CAS.
In person vacancies are limited but Telepractice spots are available.
