Fitness is a broad term which can be broken down into many components, and can be adapted to fit the needs of anyone. Some of the components include; muscle fitness, muscle strength, joint range of motion, body awareness, cardiorespriatory fitness, endurance, physical abilities and walking distance.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟𝐟 in the process of rehabilitation can be just as important as the time put into therapy. We often think that more is better, that the more therapy we do the harder we push, the more frequently we exercise, that is a linear progression. Sometimes slowing down and giving the child a break can yield a bigger increase in function than therapy done during that same time.

An example of this is when a family goes on holiday, often the family will work work work throughout the year and the child will make good improvements, but then when they go away on holiday and all the child does for two weeks is swim or ride his/her bike, the child has bigger increase in function than the last three months of therapy. What this shows is that the child’s physiology has converted that increase strength and body awareness into function.

Our clinicians are all passionate about improving your child’s functional ability. We want them to sit, to move, and walk, to talk. We can see what they are capable or and where they are failing. It is easy to focus directly on what’s needed, but sometimes going after the easy improvements, the functional ability, will help in the short term but could hold them back in the long term.

People with Cerebral Palsy have major problems with tightness in their body. Last month we started using a new therapy technique called PIASTM to help release the tension and stiffness. 𝐏𝐚𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐭 𝐓𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐏𝐈𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐌), is a massage technique started in India that releases the muscle tension out of spastic muscles. One of our first clients to benefit from PIASTM was Emilia.

Emilia walked into the Melbourne clinic using her new croc walker. She had been practicing with it for the past five months. She was unable to support her weight with her legs and had little ability to walk with any pattern or maneuver the walker where she wanted. Previously we had tried to improve her ability to use her walker but got very little progress.

𝐏𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐲 is often the first step in managing cerebral palsy. It can help improve motor skills and can prevent movement problems from getting worse over time. Physical therapy implements strength and flexibility exercises, heat treatment, massages and special equipment to give children with cerebral palsy more independence.

The goal of physical therapy is to help children:
