The Disconnected Values Model of Motivation - Breaking Muscle 08/03/2024

“According to the DVM, detecting the inconsistencies between negative habits and values (e.g., health, family, faith, character) and concluding that these "disconnects" are unacceptable promotes the need for health behavior change.”

In a nutshell, many people say their health and fitness is important to them. But when we assess their actions/behaviour and the time, effort and money the spend on it, they soon realise there is a disconnect between what they say their values are, and what it is they do.

If they aren’t happy with that disconnect then it can motivate them to make positive changes.

So despite what you say to yourself or others? Is your health and fitness really a priority? Or for that matter any value you have?

It’s certainly worth a thought isn’t it?

Parents!!

Whilst I respect that every child is different, we do believe it is possible for your teenagers in high school to keep up their health, fitness and training AND still get a great ATAR or results in their final high school years.

In fact keeping up their health and fitness or improving it is shown to IMPROVE performance and grades

“Students who are physically active tend to have better grades, school attendance, cognitive performance (e.g., memory), and classroom behaviors (e.g., on-task behavior).”

The other thing that comes to mind is what are we teaching our children?

Are we teaching them to lead some form of balanced life and to lead a healthy lifestyle?

Or when things get in the way
like study and work, then their health and fitness is the first thing that should go?

Last week was a week of talking to 40-50 plus year old men who are “too busy” to look after their health due to work commitments.

I’m empathetic. I’m 50, 3 kids, a management role as Personal Training Manager and run my own business.

Making time can be really bloody hard. Especially sleep deprived.

Honestly I’m lucky I do it for a living - as a result it’s one of my highest values.

Which leads me to this - if everything else literally comes before your health and fitness is it REALLY a priority or value for you then???

I know the personal circumstances of these guys.

They can make it happen.

If they wanted.

And so can you.

Learning to say no to things and setting boundaries is one of the most important things to do, in order to live to your values. To be authentic.

No one ever goes to the grave wishing they worked more. If you are working for someone else, if you left, you’d be replaced in a few weeks. Perspective is important.

I also don’t want to the the guy or the Dad whose kids say “Dad can’t do that anymore”.

Don’t take your health for granted.

Talk to anyone who is ill, the ONLY thing they want back is their health.

If you want more years on the planet and a better quality of life you need to make deposits in the health and fitness bank ….consistently over time.

Now.

Hoping for things to not be as busy or waiting for the wind to below in the right direction and the stars to align is just total bs. If you can make it happen while you are busy then when it slows down it will be way easier.

Life ain’t going to press pause for you. You need to make it happen.

Start paying attention to your self talk and internal dialogue - the stories you tell yourself to justify your inaction….and the decisions you aren’t making.

In 5 years time, you’ll be older and your health and fitness will be even worse……and things ain’t going to get magically better.

After 25 years I’m super proud of what I’ve achieved personally with my career. I’ve traveled around the world, trained with the worlds top coaches, and accumulated some incredible knowledge, qualifications and levels of status.

BUT…….the truth is …..I’m WAY prouder of what I’ve helped OTHERS achieve - helping and being in service to others.

Besides helping thousands lead a healthier lifestyle, I’m proud of the work we have done with our amateur fighters over the years.

We have ensured a safe (no knockouts or serious injuries) and positive experience for our fighters that’s lead to all of them keeping an avid interest in the sport and training, are still training all these years later or are now cornerman and coaches now.

That’s how we grow the sport. Cultivating the youth and the amateurs in such a way that they stay involved in the sport for a very long time and give them the best start possible.

If you are looking to start your Muay Thai journey, just want to be a hobbyist and learn some great fundamentals or want to throw your hat into the arena, reach out.

What’s the key to success?

I’ve had over 25 years of training in multiple martial art systems, having an above black belt level in 2 of them, been a full time personal trainer/Coach including being a Master RKC and national fitness presenter and an amateur and professional Muay Thai coach with some runs on the board now with athletes…… and I can honestly tell you that the answer is simple.

But it can be hard over an extended period of time.

It’s being consistent and just turning up.

Consistency.

Even when you don’t feel like it.

Something small every day or most days is better than going all out (intensity) once in a while.

It’s turning up, mentally and physically multiple times a week.

That’s why it’s our number one of our club ethos.

Just keep turning up.

Staying positive.

Your relationship sucks? Turn up
Your work sucks? Turn up
Feel like you’ve plateaued? Turn up
Tired? Stressed? Turn up
Mental health is fu**ed? Turn up

I can tell you my one saving grace despite relationship breakdowns, death and grief, struggles with 3 small children, big injuries, high work loads and stress, you name it……has been my training.

It has been having that time to switch off to all of that and to focus on being present, in my body, and with training goals.

And to keep my health and fitness.

And to hang out with great, fun people who also happen to be smashing their goals.

You are important.

What a day! had a tough 4 man elimination tournament today and came out the victor!
I have a lot of people to thank.
Firstly thanks to our opponents and who really pushed us hard and made for two amazing match ups.

Thanks to for having us and to Barry and Kar. It was another awesome amazing amateur event.

Thanks to my cornerman who has always been a pillar of support for our fighters. And a huge thanks to my brother from another mother
Pinky has been a massive help both from a training perspective and today we shared the corner co-parenting our child 🤣🤣 and prodigy.
We make an awesome team.
A big congratulations to he’s come a long way very quickly in his Muay Thai journey and we couldn’t be prouder of him.
He’s a superstar. 🥇 🏆🥇🙌🔥🔥

Congratulations to our lad who had a first round win at the amateurs event yesterday. Seb managed to land some beautiful body shots that sealed the deal early.
After his points loss last time he put a tremendous amount of work into his inside game, intent, physicality and fitness and brought a whole new level and it really showed. He was a different beast.

Thanks to our opponent for the fight, to for having us again and to for helping us out and cornering in Melbourne.

People often focus on the “cost” of a said product or service. Or in our instance a membership, our small group training or personal training services.

But the financial aspect is only one aspect when it comes to cost.

It’s also time, effort, energy and attention as well.

But have you ever considered when it comes to having terrible health and fitness …what is the cost of staying exactly where you are, the same ….. and the cost of doing nothing about it in the years to come?

A late update on our 3rd Amateur fight for over at the Muay Thai Victoria tournament on the weekend.

Unfortunately we came away with a loss. No excuses. We faced a good tough opponent that stretched us and that we will learn a lot from.
It was a great learning experience for Seb as his first interstate bout, a shorter lead up and without his usual trainer in the corner. Whilst Seb showed moments of promise his inside game needed work that eventually lead to his performance not being what it usually is. And against a skilled, tough and aggressive fighter who constantly moved forward and put the pressure on.

Win or lose we just look to get better and we learn more from our losses.

Irrespective we are super proud of Seb. In and out of the ring he is already a champion in our eyes and we couldn’t be prouder of him.

We are all super excited about what the future holds for this talented young man.

Onwards and upwards.

Last night was a very special moment for me receiving my purple belt (and the first belt Laurino has ever given) from someone I respect and I admire as a Coach, competitor and human being, so much.

Thank you to and for my promotion to purple belt.

It was hard earned during the most challenging time of my life at 50 years with 3 boys under 5.

Thank you to all those coaches that have contributed to my journey along the way, particularly and and our team at the club who have all contributed immensely to my Jiu Jitsu journey.

Thanks also to for being my “uke”, training partner and friend leading up to grading.

This one means a lot 🥹 Ossssssss

This is the smile of accomplishment and achievement of a very long term goal.

Here is a MASSIVE congratulations to who completed the arduous Krav Maga Global general/civilian instructors course to attain the level of KMG Instructor Graduate Level 1.

After years of training in Krav Maga and Muay Thai and upholding a high level of physical fitness and having a ridiculously full on career and busy family life, Trav just completed 2 x 2 week training blocks with the KMG global instructor team.

It’s a massive accomplishment that few will ever do- let alone achieve with a busy family life and career.

We are very grateful to have Trav on our coaching staff to offer the highest level of tuition to our members.
