Today is R U OK? Day and a significant reminder to check in with the people around us, especially children, who might not always express their feelings openly. Here are some thoughtful tips on how to check in with kids on R U OK? Day:
1. Create a Safe Space
Ensure the environment is welcoming and non-judgmental. Kids need to feel safe and comfortable to open up about their feelings.
2. Use Age-Appropriate Language
Tailor your questions and conversations to the child's age and comprehension level. Younger children might respond better to simpler questions, while older kids and teens might appreciate more nuanced discussions.
3. Be an Active Listener
Show genuine interest in what they say. Maintain eye contact, nod, and provide verbal affirmations. Avoid interrupting, and let them express their thoughts fully.
4. Ask Open-Ended Questions
Instead of yes/no questions, use open-ended ones like:
"How are you feeling today?"
"What was the best part of your day?"
"Is there something on your mind you'd like to talk about?"
5. Observe Non-Verbal Cues
Pay attention to body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice. Sometimes kids might say they’re fine, but their behavior can indicate otherwise.
6. Share Your Own Feelings
Modeling vulnerability can help kids feel more comfortable sharing their own feelings. You might say, "I felt pretty stressed today because of work. How about you? Did you have any tough moments?"
7. Validate Their Feelings
Acknowledge and validate their emotions without judgment. Statements like, "It's okay to feel sad," or, "I understand why that would make you upset," can be very reassuring.
8. Provide Reassurance and Support
Let them know you are there for them, no matter what. Offer support and let them know it's okay to ask for help if they need it.
9. Encourage Positive Coping Mechanisms
Suggest healthy ways to cope with stress or negative emotions, such as drawing, talking to a friend, or playing outside.
10. Follow Up
Checking in shouldn't be a one-time event. Continue to touch base and create an ongoing dialogue about mental health and well-being.

Not all Heroes Wear Capes!
Today we celebrate Early Childhood Educators Day and recognize the dedication, passion, and hard work that our Educators pour into shaping the minds and hearts of children during their most formative years.
In a world that often moves too fast, they remind us of the importance of slowing down to listen, to play, and to learn. Educators are the unsung heroes who teach not just the ABCs and 123s, but the essential life skills that help children grow into kind, confident, and capable individuals.
ACECQA recently inspired us to take a moment to reflect on the importance of professionalism in the education and care sector. We are proud to support our team of Educators to demonstrate ongoing professionalism through knowledge and skills, communication skills, prioritising relationships, ethical behaviour, good work ethic, taking responsibility and showing accountability.

Reading to children offers a multitude of benefits that extend far beyond the immediate joy of sharing a story. One of the most significant advantages is the development of language skills. When parents and caregivers read aloud, children are exposed to a richer vocabulary and more complex sentence structures than they might encounter in everyday conversation. This exposure helps enhance their language comprehension, phonemic awareness, and ultimately, their ability to read independently. It lays a solid foundation for literacy, which is crucial for academic success and lifelong learning.
In addition to language development, reading to children fosters emotional and cognitive growth. Stories often introduce young listeners to a wide range of emotions and situations, allowing them to develop empathy and better understand the world around them. Through the characters and plotlines, children learn valuable life lessons and problem-solving skills. The act of reading together strengthens the bond between the reader and the child, providing a sense of security and nurturing that contributes to the child's emotional well-being.
Reading to children ignites their imagination and curiosity. Books transport young minds to different worlds, cultures, and times, broadening their understanding and appreciation of diversity. This imaginative exploration encourages creativity and critical thinking. By fostering a love for reading early on, children are more likely to become lifelong readers, which opens doors to endless knowledge, entertainment, and personal growth.

Spending time outside in winter offers numerous benefits for children, building resilience and encouraging them to adapt, problem-solve, and cope with discomfort. When kids face the challenges of cold weather, they learn to be flexible and resourceful, adjusting to varying conditions. This adaptability is a critical life skill that can serve them well in many aspects of their lives. Additionally, being outdoors in winter allows children to explore and observe the changing seasons, fostering a sense of curiosity and connection to the natural world.
While winter weather might be wet and muddy, these conditions can actually enhance the fun. With a pair of gumboots and a positive attitude, children can discover the joys of splashing in puddles, building forts, or simply exploring their environment. Embracing the chilly weather not only enriches their playtime but also instils a mindset that values perseverance and a willingness to try new things.
So, bundle up, head outside, and let the adventure begin!
