At we are restoring habitat through planting indigenous plants and providing urban habitat for a range of fauna, like this Yellow Rumped Thornbill.

Our Aquifer Storage Recovery scheme collects water from the local Brownhill Creek, filters the water through three cells and pumps this water into the Aquifer. This reduces our water use and filters pollutants from the water.

Posted • Happy World Parrot Day!

Today celebrates over 350 parrot species worldwide. It raises awareness of the threats faced by wild and captured parrots.

This is a Musk Lorikeet - a relative of the rare Little Lorikeet. Musk Lorikeets can be found in open, dry forest and woodlands dominated by Eucalpyts and are often seen in suburban parks and gardens.

Musk Lorikeets are nomadic following the flowering and fruiting of their food sources.

There has been some decline in the species due to habitat loss, so our urban green spaces are important habitat areas.

Today we celebrate the importance of bees (and other pollinators) to biodiversity and to our food security. One in three mouthfuls of our food is pollinated by a bee.

This bee is a Resin Bee (Megachile erythorpyga) - one of thousands of Australian native bee species. This bee was seen on our Melaleucas. Female Resin Bees lay their eggs in a chamber and close the chamber with seal made from the sap of trees.

Native bees are very important to our ecosystems and some of them have co-evolved with our native flora over thousands of years.

It was a chaotic and crazy Kokedama session for Mother's Day at Kids' Club. Fifty kokedama were made in the hour - messy making is a sign of good fun.

Thanks to everyone who came and thanks to Umalia for volunteering amongst the chaos. Special thanks to my partner, Stuart, for helping once again.

Our Green Space Highlight today is our first highlight off course (off the golf course).

We are very excited to feature the Butterfly Conservation South Australia. Over the last 25 years their members have worked tirelessly to protect and promote the butterflies and moths of South Australia.

Today we are highlighting the crucial work of their members who volunteer to protect the Chequered Copper Butterfly (Lucia lumbaria). Once thought almost extinct in Adelaide, a small population was found over ten years ago at Victoria Park/Pakapakanthi in the City of Adelaide

BCSA members and City of Adelaide staff, have managed this area to ensure that this important ecosystem is conserved to ensure the host plant, Native Sorrell (Oxalis perennans), is protected and continues to provide a food source for the butterfly larvae.

The butterfly larvae have a symbiotic relationship with ants from the Iridomyrmex family. Ants take the caterpillars into their nest and take care of them. The chrysalis is formed within the ant nest, from where the butterfly emerges after about 12 days.

Learn more, or watch videos of the ants and the butterfly larvae on the BCSA YouTube channel accessible from their page: Butterfly Conservation South Australia.

Many thanks to Greg Coote for the use of his photo.

This is a Masked Lapwing which was on our 15th fairway. We often have a few pairs living at our course at .

We know, this isn't the most popular bird going around because during breeding season they can be a bit of a nuisance chasing people away from their young.

This is one of many birds - and other fauna - found at our course. Visit iNaturalist, Click on Community, then projects and search for our project: Glenelg Golf Club Biodiversity Inventory. You may be surprised at what you will find at our course.

As part of the Environmental Golf Solutions and Green Gecko Studios collaboration, Kate and Monina are bringing you biodiversity and sustainability highlights from around Australia.

The aim of these highlights is to showcase the amazing work being undertaken in a wide variety of green spaces. These projects align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) – each highlight will include an SDG graphic.

Why are we doing this? Because we want to raise awareness around Australia of the contribution that green spaces make to our environment.

If you want to share your project, please let us know. We are not limiting these highlights to turf management – we want to hear from schools, Councils, community groups etc, etc.

This White Faced Heron was sitting at the 8th water hazard in the early morning sunlight - it was taking a break from feeding in the water.

White Faced Herons eat a wide variety of prey, including crustaceans, fish, frogs and insects - all of which can be found at the 8th and in other water courses at .

A number of years ago, we had a pair that successfully raised to chicks, so we are hoping this one finds a mate this year.

Last year I was lucky enough to visit Al Mouj Golf at Al Mouj Muscat and spend the morning with the amazing Steve Johnson. Not only did I hear and see the wonderful things that they are doing at Al Mouj, but I also managed to get a shot of a Rainbow Bee Eater.

Steve keeps bees at the course and these bee eaters were enjoying eating his bees - unfortunately for Steve.

This Rainbow Bee Eater is one of over 170 bird species found on the course. If you don't know much about Oman, you probably won't believe me, but it is true!

Last week, Biodiversity Manager, , gave a presentation on the importance of golf courses to urban biodiversity at the Joint International Congress.

Monina spoke about the range of projects we have been undertaking, including: our naturalised roughs; work with and to rewild the Yellowish Sedge Skipper; and working with to introduce native fish to our water courses.

Many thanks to for their support.

It was a great conference and a perfect opportunity to spread the word internationally about the good things happening in golf in Australia.
