Calling all budding Artists! A very exciting opportunity exists for two Aboriginal students in years 10-12 to participate in Future Studios, a free program offered by Adelaide Contemporary Experimental for a one-week intensive period in the second week of the July school holidays.

This unique industry placement nurtures creativity and practical skills with the support of mentor artists and ACE staff and gives young artists an understanding of professional studio practice. The young artists will gain an understanding of the impact of studio work and the daily activities involved in a professional artistic practice. They will also experience working alongside their peers, as well as ACE studio artists, in a professional studio setting at a highly regarded contemporary gallery and art organisation. They will be supported by a First Nation artist mentor and participate in workshops led by First Nations artists. Following the week-long intensive, the young artists will be supported and guided by the Future Studios Coordinator in the development and completion of artwork for presentation in the Future Studios exhibition that will be held at ACE in conjunction with the annual Studios exhibition that will open on the 9th of November 2024. The young artists will also be provided with art materials appropriate to their individual artistic practice to enable experimentation and reduce any barriers to participation. Stage 1 SACE credits are attached to involvement.

A public transport travel allowance will be offered to eligible young artist participants.
The program will run from 10am - 4.15pm from the 15-19 July at the ACE Studio in the Lion Arts Centre. Students should wear enclosed shoes. Catering is provided.

If you are interested, please email [email protected] by COB Wednesday 10th July. First in, best dressed.

An amazing partnership we have with Power Community Ltd and partners.

Seeing students embody the NAIDOC theme "Keep the fire burning: BLAK, LOUD & PROUD" all year round has been wonderful and we at Aboriginal Pathways want to give praise to both the students and those PCL/SAASTA team members facilitating the workshops and taking part in these conversations.

What a wonderful short film to bring all of the good work being done by students, staff and partners to the light.

Congratulations to Year 10 student Kirene for her feature also.

Kirene's guernsey design is a display of talent, artistry and pride. A beautiful story is told in her art and it is amazing to know that the SAASTA Minlagawi cultural trip with Nharangga Aboriginal Cultural Tours was able to provide some inspiration for Kirene to not only design her teams guernsey but to also pay respects to Narungga elders and Ancestors.

The featured articles are a great example of the amazing things our students are capable of and show some of the adventures that they get up to.

If your SAASTA students appear in any local media, please tag us or forward the articles to us so we can repost and share the good news amongst the wider Aboriginal Pathways community.
Keep up the good work

How wonderful is it to see the students at our Central Yorke Academy recently getting recognised in the Yorke Peninsula Country Times for their efforts.

To see students giving it their all in the classroom and being acknowledged for this in the community is nothing short of amazing. There is so much great work being done at Central Yorke by the supportive staff and students in their educational pursuits, their commitment to strengthening connection to culture and of course playing some really good football.

Both the Curriculum Excellence and the Football Team (Female) Awards are not won easily and so we think it is only right to give the students a well deserved round of applause.

SAASTA team.

It was great having you all attend. We hope Whyalla and all other attendees who engaged on the day took something from the ACE Expo.

Thank you to the students for not only attending, but for really immersing in the day. Throughout the expo, many thought provoking conversations were had, many ideas were shared and a greater understanding of what is out there for our students was established.

We hope you all left the expo feeling inspired and can't wait to see you all at the next event!!!

Wow! What an amazing showcase this years Santos Aboriginal Power Cup turned out to be. Everybody involved deserves a round of applause for their efforts.

Over the entire carnival students engaged in educational workshops, explored various career pathways, sat for panel discussions, participated in cultural activities and of course played some football before concluding at the Student Awards ceremony at the Adelaide Oval before Whyalla and Para Hills Academies went to battle in both grand finals in the lead up to Port Adelaide FC taking on Carlton.

The carnival was full of many on and off field highlights from students across each academy and there are too many magic moments to list, but it must be said that we are so proud of our students and the leadership, courage and various other qualities they displayed throughout the year leading into the Carnival.

We take great pride in witnessing the growth of all SAASTA and Power Community Ltd program students however we must highlight some teams and individuals here and put some well-deserved spotlight on their successes.

Congratulations to the following award winners:
Whyalla Academy (Banner Design)
Central Yorke Academy (Curriculum Excellence Award)
Salisbury and Central Yorke Academies (Football Award – Female)
Para Hills Academy (Football Award – Male)
Riverland Academy (Think! Road Safety Award)
Tyson Fielding (High Flyer Award – Flinders University)
Shayla Holloway (Leadership Award – Blooms the Chemist)

We at SAASTA are proud to see Tyson Fielding from our Port Augusta Academy acknowledged for his consistent attendance and commitment to the Santos Aboriginal Power Cup over the last 3 years.
At the Student Awards Ceremony, Tyson was awarded the "High Flyer Award" and was presented his award by Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor (Students) Professor Romy Lawson from Flinders University.
Throughout his time with our Port Augusta Academy, Tyson has gone above and beyond meeting the SAASTA KPI's and has inspired us all with his story.
Tyson has captured the attention and admiration of everybody who has been fortunate enough to work with him and/or call him a friend.
Keep on striving Tyson, you have the whole community supporting you on your journey.

Thank you to Power Community Ltd and Port Adelaide Football Club for the amazing work capturing these moments.

SAASTA offer a BIG thank you to Kira Bain for joining us in week 7 to share her knowledge of Kaurna language. All students engaged in learning about the history of Kaurna language and how it has evolved over time. They finished off with creating collaborative acknowledgements of country, drawing from their new understanding of words, and using them in context.

We're proud of the students and their ongoing commitment to learning language and connecting to culture together.

In term 1, SAASTA Specialist Year 12 Aboriginal Studies students attended a weeklong camp on Adnyamathanha Country. The camp was an opportunity to grow a more in-depth understanding of their Aboriginal identity, diversity and contemporary experiences. Student feedback from the camp since has exemplified their eagerness for learning on country, with and from Aboriginal leaders, elders and community.

a great idea by Whyalla Secondary College
Looks beautiful and sends a strong message.

During Reconciliation week students learned about reconciliation and what it can look like in the classroom.
Students from across year 7 created leaf designs to create a wreath wall display, some using Aboriginal art symbols and others using symbols representing reconciliation.

This is their final product now on display in year 7 with emphasising β€œIn the end, reconciliation is a spiritual process, which requires more than just a legal framework. It has to happen in the hearts and minds of people.” 🌟

Last Thursday as part of SAASTA Specialist Program, Year 12 Aboriginal Studies students attended a day trip to Raukkan Aboriginal community. Students started the day with a tour of the famous Raukkan church and art gallery, guided by Ngarrindjeri elder Uncle Moogy who shared his stories and family history. After lunch, students visited Raukkan Aboriginal community school, and got the opportunity to show off their basketball skills (mainly from the Raukkan students!).

Aboriginal Studies students are constantly learning about themes of identity, diversity and how the past has influenced our current society and were able to strengthen their knowledge and understanding from this experience.

So much amazing work being done by all involved with the Whyalla Academy.

Congratulations to these two wonderful Academies on being the last two teams standing.

All students from both schools have done an amazing job on the oval and beyond and are being recognised for not just their footballing talents but more so their embodying of positive behaviours, working tirelessly on their schoolwork and attending school for 80% or more of the school year.

With all the great work being done by not only the Para Hills and Whyalla Academies students but also their staff as leaders, it is a pleasure to say that the opportunity to play on the Adelaide Oval before the Port Adelaide vs Carlton game was SO WELL DESERVED by both sides.

Congratulations to Para Hills Academy (made up of Para Hills, Valley View and Banksia Park Intl High Schools) for being victorious in both the girls and boys finals.

We extend our congratulations to Whyalla Academy (made up of Whyalla Secondary and Cowell Area Schools) girls and boys for making it to the final and giving it their best also.

We are proud of all SAASTA Academies and their continuing achievements and can't wait to see the continued growth of all involved.

Thanks to Victor Harbor High School SAASTA students for the invite to your Reconciliation morning tea.
It was a great day to come together, get to know you all and chat briefly about SAASTA Programs whilst sharing the space with local Ramindjeri community leaders and Elders.

Seeing the pride you all take in your learning as well as your individual cultural journeys is a reminder of the great things and strong behaviours our SAASTA students are achieving in the classroom and beyond.

We are just as excited as you all are and cant wait to see the Fleurieu Academy at the Santos Aboriginal Power Cup.
