MATCH REPORT ROUND 5
23/5/21
Away versus Rowe Park
8-0 Win
Good team effort again this week
Plenty of goals and there could have been plenty more.
The pleasing aspect was we continued to try and score through our soccer abilities.
Credit to the Campos the keeper who just came out off hospital with two bruised arms.
He made the scoreboard look more respectable, along with the countless goalmouth defensive scrambles..
We never disrespected them, we fought till the end.
Another clean sheet.
Congrats to Jake for his debut in goals and Joe's debut in the outfield.
Midfield was in total control and when we spread the game wider it opened them up more.
Well done to all the goal scorers.
Thank God you scored Alex didn't want to keep you on for another ten minutes.
Micheal showed what he can do without using his hands,
Sadly Ryan picked up a reoccurring injury. Hope you heal quick.
Thanks to all the helpers and Alex for both cartons of beers, that covers 2 red cards for the year for him.
Official match report desk was on the park playing, so this one done by club legend

MATCH REPORT ROUND 4 9/5/21
Home vs Adelaide Croatia Vukovi
Matheson Imax
Won 5:0
ā½ļø Lee (pen. )
ā½ļø Christian
ā½ļø ā½ļø Frank
ā½ļø Abraham
If you were a lucky member of the heaving hordes at Matheson today, you saw yourself a show.
Vikingās preparation through the week was spot on. Properly unified. And that to a man. For this result, nothing less would suffice.
Hold this performance lads. Composure and character. A benchmark has now been set.
Itās amazing how often (or seldom) we say how simple football can be. And when itās flowing, you share the absolute pleasure of watching work become reward.
After an early chance or two went close, Vikings had shown clear menace. A free kick from Lee saw the ball strike a wayward visiting hand inside the 18 and the resulting spot-kick was duly despatched. The superstitious referee waved remotely centrally (after studiously checking his laces were tied) to indicate the scoreboard was open for business. ā½ļø
1:0
Vikingsā second goal was a delight.
Enzo Alexander-Arnold had gone from fullback to a more advanced position, giving Nesh a touch of rest & making good ground to curve a crucial cross for Christian to climb the stairway to heaven, bowing the head and blessing the faithful. ā½ļø
Youāll just have to forgive me.
It could be Andyās fault.
Or possibly Leeās...
2:0
The rest of the half included many more chances and some fantastic football.
Strangely no further score, though it had looked very likely.
No shortage of action in the second either.
The visiting defence were busy boys and after the ball was desperately fended away from their box Frank was in good position to meet it, sending a scud missile home past a Croatia keeper whoād made several good saves throughout the match. ā½ļø
3:0
Vukovi consequently tried a higher line but after Abraham had taken time to re-attach a wayward toe, he was able to break it. The line not the toe. Abe had all the time in the world to apply a cool finish. ā½ļø
4:0
The cake was well iced by a chip of speculation. A d**k from Frank on 20 odd yards that snuck in just over the desperate reach of a flailing glove, to glance the underside of the bar & cross the line. Not bad off the non-preferred foot. Inch perfect really...
Gambled. Won. ā½ļø
5:0
Vikings had welcomed back Vince and Alex from injury, both having an impact when introduced & perhaps slightly unlucky not to be on the scoresheet. Good work boys, and steady as she goes.
Focus was 100%. Both on & off-field - perhaps (no; definitely!) with maybe the exception of Smith who may have earned himself a Broken Boot nom for excessive rotations late in the game, however fortunately Tyson was switched on from the park to settle the excitement. Not bad going given a Viking brother had earlier gifted him a hefty yet somewhat intimate two-faced-falcon minus the ball.
The Dichiera dial was fine by the way. The Matej-moosh wasnāt. No matter, thought the guilty, as he departed the scene with a happy chorus of āOhh, sorry. Hey man... Friendly fire!ā, leaving his victim the task of a careful exam to ensure all his gold fillings were still securely anchored in their besieged dental harbour.
āBoot there too apparently Enzā¦!
Joey-G could thank the whole side for his clean sheet really, but also did his own work well, having good command of his area & saving a certain late goal. Meanwhile Simon had kept going all day, frustrating the oppositionās centre forward and running a strong back line. Surprisingly, the feet felt their age at one point though and went for a small kip, the stalwart defender finding himself heading the ball around ankle level when the ground seemed like it suddenly fancied him for lunch.
Sometimes itāll be difficult and try to eat anything...
Wont be told either.
In the summing up: A home performance ranking with some of the best at Matheson.
Burn eternal that Viking spirit...!
Bye this week - Cup nonsense.
So, Quiz nite fun at the Daly!
Rowe Park away the next.
The Vikings are on the march.
Settle in...!

MATCH REPORT ROUND 3 1/5/21
Away vs Elephant Warriors
Grange Reserve (not the Penfolds)
Won 2:0
ā½ļø Abraham
ā½ļø Ryan
The Black and the Blue.
When you play amateurs, thereās always a bruise or two...
Early attacks went the way of the Elephant men but Adelaide Vikings FC soon saw off the offensive āivoryā trade and took over the game with composure and control, effectively killing any thrust.
For 30 minutes Vikings had everything but a goal. One looked like coming, but seemed almost Disney-shy to make an appearance... Leeās corners were on song & a Tyson header was well saved by the upright. Ty totalled 3 or 4 nods at goal out there. The belfry was a-ringinā... Sadly the scoreboard wasnāt.
Ryan found clean air to bomb down the flank today and cut in firing one across the face with a first effort. The visiting side knew a score was sorely needed before the interval. The ever hungry away-horde felt it too. Another corner was won and the call sounded. āIronic-Leeā graciously made way for Subsequent Smith who was brought on to apply his special powers of deceptive lack of pace and added aerial threat.
Cue standard āMad-Gagā gesture - with almost one, if not two, dislocated shoulders... š¤·š»āāļø (See Shaggy for taping mate. Or Louie who recently qualified. šš¼)
Anyway, Team Tall-timber combined to cut the opposition apart with some nice interplay. All at grass level.
Sub~Smithy was on the rush (these donāt go long - you have to pay attention) and soon tuned in with a Diing-dong* one-two. The youngster was on his absolute best form today, getting first to a sneaky through ball & crossing well for an undeniable Abraham, who sliced his own way through on six yards under pressure, poking home ā½ļø.
Maximum value prior to the long-time-coming whistle for the break.
1:0
Today Nick & Frank combined well in the centre of the park, often hunting as a pair. Each benefitted from the otherās pressure, winning the right to distribute or charge the Elephants. Had to be done... and they showed how it was.
One showed usual drive & determination, killing the home sideās ability to play easily through the centre. The other was near-infallible in possession and especially hard-working first half. The E-Wozzas shouldāve tried another tack - they certainly had boys waiting - even sitting - in the wings. Pretty sure one even went for smoko & no one noticed.
Joey the Glove was operating in smooth-mode and could largely thank Vikingsā solid backline wall for his silky clean sheet. Very fitting too, when at one point the visitors had no less than four keepers on the field!
Second half, Frank caught every bit of one solid shot from the D - and was well deserving of a goal today. However sweet the strike, it brought the best from the home keeper, who was right up to the tusk with a brilliant acrobatic save.
Elephants went down often though & couldnāt cope with the calibre of Vikingsā physicality. Letās say there were a few āhorizontal interludesā.
The Payne-train rolled through a few stations... whilst Chi, Shags & Pete all applied their own brand of smash & grab. Others just stood or fell on people. Possibly they were in the way.
Back to the action & Lee was momentarily like Icarus, so high did he fly with a midfield header the sun grew jealous. At the same time all the blood left his beans. Maybe there were other raisins. This mightāve been why a little later, a sure-thing finish became a 7-yard spray... Ouch, at one-nil too... Not many, if any, were as devastated as he. What are you gonna do?
The only thing you can: Get on with it.
So we did. Ryan cashed in on some more wide break action, the best of which by far was a proper ādine-out: all-you-can-eatā 35 yard^ complete thunderstrike. ā½ļø Certain goal of the year contender... keeper no chance. Funny, the fairly well uninformed just finished wisely saying āNo, dont do that...ā (take it all on yourself). Oh alright, probs ok if you did do that then. As you were mate. Bloody cracker!
2:0
Vikings could now make the most of their two goal cushion & power home to the end. It was mostly one-way pressure & surely some icing to the cake would be applied. Several chances amounted to nought though, and even a goal-bound strike off the scone of Smith head from a well placed corner was somehow minced off the line.
Next: Vukovi must try a visit on Viking shores....
A lip-smacking feast of football action awaits!!
Who wants it more?!

MATCH REPORT ROUND 2 18/04/21
Home at Matheson Mosh-Pit vs West Adelaide Raptors
Won 3:1
ā½ļø Pauly
ā½ļø Lee (pen.)
ā½ļø Frank
Lineups set. Take positions. Look to the centre. Keepers hang their manky unwashed-from-last-season towels in the equally fishy nets and stow various Molotov-Staminade^ bottles (^endorsement pending), before sitting down in their slippers to do some puzzles from the Sunday Mail over a cigar & waffles. They had plenty of time you see, as todayās freshly golden-liveried Official Match Referee Mr Calvin Laureate was still to square away some of the dayās malformities.
Indeed the odd toin has been known to need a good cossing... to time from time.
Teams also prefer to know which way theyāre facing before theyāre set to face it, and before the match looks to kick off, if itās not too much... Linesmen, who casually sauntered along anything but the straight & level, should also be afforded the opportunity to find the right right wing...
Political comments aside, the Toss was eventually done & won.
And yep, you guessed it: āAll Change...ā!
Was a bit that way at times today.
Action? There was some. Vikings dealt with the early exchanges pretty well on the whole and started to gain the bulk of possession & make meaningful forays into good areas. Capitalising on any poor Raptor touches or tackles yielded a decent share of frees & corners. Ryan placed one static kick from the edge of the box which whistled by Tysonās presidential scone to find Captain Pauly in just the right spot for a swing of the peg-leg! ā½ļø The ball bounced nicely off the inside of a rough but very tightly strung backup net. This thing wasnāt pretty either - sheād catch no kippers - but was such a piece of craft as to be almost totally invisible to the naked eye on camera - yet it had more bad knots than the French navy and more pegs than a Hills Hoist display lot.
1:0
Frank made some luck out there, as well as a complete nuisance of himself to Raptorsā defence, getting brought down for a penalty. Vikingsā spot-kick specialist duly ignored a cheeky call of āLEE, SUB!ā and was both appreciative of a 12yd mark devoid of excavations and clinical in despatch. ā½ļø
2:0
Both sides lined up for the restart. Vikings were keen for it. Apparently none of the linesmen were. In fact they seemed to have gone on strike. Nary a flag bearer to be seen. No flag either. Had to send a search party for it... Ah yes, there it lay - cleverly hidden in the grass far side...!
Bit of a variety show out there really. You get the idea by now. Only Bert Newton was missing.
Rotations had players going all over the shop as well. On, off, left right out front and back... a bench abacus & near-scientific focus was required. Amidst all the activity Enzo arrived. Heād been sadly held up this morning with some sort of 180 litre oil-skid. Sounds a bit unfortunate but you can imagine how long itād take to stop. One sympathises. Anyway Vikingsā resident Dichiera Doctor-fan performed one burpee, three cartwheels and a farmers-blow on the difficult journey to the far wing for line duty. Served him well too. First couple of touches were very neat.
A hearty horns high & happy welcome back to AV Vet Shaggy who had usual run & telling impact in turnovers out there. Horns up as well, to both new Viking Matt, on his first start & also Michael on his first run on-field. Pretty sure they enjoyed themselves in the Matheson pit. ;)
Wait till we get a Wall of Death goinā lads....! \m/
Chi was tight & effective in defence from entry in the latter part of the first half but had a different story in the second. Itād be fair to say he was about as excited to be in a midfield role as Iād be listening to Andy Harperās radio commentary of tournament chess by candlelight in the Alzheimerās Over 85ās Invitational.
Self-sacrifice was very honourably made and the much-loved stalwart pulled himself off to allow the Vikingsā middle to reset & reconnect.
Corners were good today. Tyson and Lee were providing quality deliveries into the box. As did Ryan with some longer balls from free kick positions. Simon had a volley that went very close from a corner second half. If only it was on his famous left foot...
There were two or three in a row it seemed, then a countering fast-break saw Vikings caught short with both Ryan & Simon upfield and not enough help for Chi āDeepā Diep to deal with a racing Raptor forward, who finished well at pace to give the visitors a ray of hope. ā½ļø
2:1
For a second a couple of heads looked like they wanted to drop. Just a touch. Wasnāt for long. Weāre not made like that. Positive drive became full reward when Enzo played a great ball to Lee, who soared like a noble swan, nodding down for Frank, who swiftly pounced with customary bustle to mug the onrushing keeper with a deft lob. ā½ļø Yes baby!
3:1
Joey earned stripes on his second start between the sticks. Good command of his 18 yard box and did well with kick-outs & distribution. Iced the cake though, with a brilliant reflex save one-on-one to deny a dangerously confident Raptors forward.
Great day out. Couple of take-aways for all out there but points deserved. Respect to Raptors, who always compete and we know to be a good group of guys. Not many matches are without their ni**le but all in a days work when you can shake hands every time at the last bell. Frustration boiled over with a little petulance near the end but it was nice to see the right response from the sideline. Probably got away with a little lesson there too, connect wouldāve seen a jog-on. All good, chalk it off and letās look forward to the return leg - we all love our football!
Sort of hesitate to say who weāll play next - the league keeps us guessing...!
Whoever you are, Adelaide Vikings FC will be on the raid, well steeled for a bit of frothānācut - and out to bring the points home!!

MATCH REPORT ROUND 1 11/04/21
Away at Ahgarna Bark vs Elizabeth Downs
Drawn 2:2
ā½ļø Lee Gagliardi (pen.)
ā½ļø Nick Moustrides
Adelaide Vikings Season 2021 kicked off with a cracking clash today.
A āShowdown at Noonā....
Followed by a goal down at 12:01.
The Vikings were not as quick on the early trigger as Downs, who broke down the right and were able to find a man near the edge of the box who was given enough time to send a deadly shot home through bodies into the corner.
1:0
Time to wake up & sort yourselves out lads! Confident now to exploit any space, the home side sought to press the advantage & drove at the Vikings defence, who struggled for a bit but battled hard all day keeping them out.
Slowly the Vikings started to impose themselves on the game. Downs had less attack as they became much busier defending (funny how that works ^^).
The rest of the half was ebb & flow, with a couple of half-chances - including one Vikings corner that flew right across the goal about two feet up & two feet out, somehow missing everyone!
Ryan earned a clear penalty after some good attacking play saw him latch onto one and he was brought down before he could shoot. Lee āDependableā Gagliardi to the spot. He measured up, eventually calculated ball placement & trajectory (inconveniently some nonce put an open manhole right where the pen spot is). Anyway Lee went right, keeper went left - which was right - and Carmineās eyes stayed down... which wouldnāt you know, is exactly the right formula for a goal!
1:1
Even-Steven at the break. No changes & the lads were set to continue building their gameplay to get up and take the points.
Downs put a dent in that plan with a superb solo run & goal from midfield, where weād had a tough time keeping proper track of their danger-men.
2:1.
Rotations needed to happen and Frank, whoād come on earlier to make a difference, was moved into midfield to give Nick a rest. This meant Alex could drop back left for Smith to join Lee up front. It was nearly instant glory on return to action too for the sub as he was almost immediately put through to run on near post. The chance went begging though, as the touch wasnāt what it shouldāve been. Actually it was complete s**t. Like the attempted cross to Alex a bit later. More crap than a campās long-drop after a heavy Easter.
Never mind... keep working, keep fighting!
Fight we did and got reward too after an excellent team goal. Great work by a number of players, including new man Nesci, supplying the assist for Nick, who mustāve cheekily clipped the wings from Pegasus while the old nag was sleeping, so high did he rise to score a rare but excellent header.
Oxygen masks fell from above.
Untangling himself for the descent to earth, the boys all got around Nick as everyone could rightfully celebrate Vikingsā first open-play goal for the year. It was a brilliant example, simple, incisive and well-worked.
Twice behind and twice back level, Vikings showed their true spirit in applying even more pressure & looking for the win. Further attacking plays & chances came, goal- line clearances and all. Downs were hard pressed to hold them off til the final bell tolled. Honours even.
Special mentions to debutants, Nesci & Joey - good games lads, keep working what you need. Nesc, you might consider a different chorus during play than āTouch Me (I want to feel your body)ā by Samantha Fox ;)
And to Chi at the back, who got through more sc******ng action today than the entire cast of Indiana Joan and the Temple of P**n.
Next up Round Two... Rowe Park, weāll be looking at you!
