TGSS presents:
THE GLASS MENAGERIE
🦄💙🌹

WRITTEN BY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS

4, 5, 6, 7 December @7:30pm Little Theatre, University of Adelaide

'So what are we going to do now, honey, the rest of our lives? Just sit down in this house and watch the parades go by? Amuse ourselves with the glass menagerie, darling? Eternally play those worn-out records your father left us as a painful reminder of him?'

A drama of great tenderness, charm and beauty, The Glass Menagerie is one of the most famous plays of the modern theatre.

Amanda Wingfield is a faded, tragic remnant of Southern gentility who lives in poverty in a dingy St. Louis apartment with her son, Tom, and her daughter, Laura. Amanda strives to give meaning and direction to her life and the lives of her children, though her methods are ineffective and irritating. Tom is driven nearly to distraction by his mother's nagging and seeks escape in alcohol and the world of the movies. Laura also lives in her illusions. She is crippled, and this defect, intensified by her mother's anxiety to see her married, has driven her more and more into herself.

When a gentleman caller arrives for dinner, the Wingfield family is flooded with hope. However, it is uncertain if this visitor will change things for the better.

STARRING: Jessica Merrick, Connor Duncan, Mia Livingston-Pearce, Liam Warmeant.

Lily Watkins is THE DIRECTOR, a worn-out individual.

Lily is the secretary for TGSS and has been involved with numerous shows with the Theatre Guild and the Student Society over the past few years, both onstage and behind the scenes. She played a Letter Writer in Tiny Beautiful Things, a Party Member in Nineteen Eighty-Four, and Marina in Uncle Vanya. She was Props Manager for the TASA and Dramati-Cal award-winning Ink and for Cyrano, and took stage managing roles in Kissing the Witch and The Tempest. This is the first show that she has directed.

“I had the strange feeling that it wanted to consume us, take us into itself, make us a part of the house…”

Sophie Livingston-Pearce is ELEANOR VANCE, who is having the best week of her life. Honestly, she is.

Sophie hopes The Haunting of Hill House is the closest she ever gets to a ghost encounter—though she is certain she would endure a haunting more nonchalantly than her character, poor Eleanor. She has been performing on Adelaide stages for a few years with the likes of the Theatre Guild, Independent Theatre, and Adelaide Repertory Theatre, but Hill House will be Sophie’s TGSS debut. She is thrilled at the dramatic opportunities this play gives her, namely, to fly off the handle, feel sorry for herself, and brood—an actor’s three favourite activities!

Watch Eleanor's descent into madness in THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, opening this Wednesday at The Little Theatre! Tickets on sale at https://www.trybooking.com/CQQXW

“You’re probably just hungry. I’m starved myself, and nothing unsettles me more than that. I snap and snarl and imagine all sorts of things.”

Nina Wilcock is THEODORA, a confident artist

“I hate writing these things. I feel like a darn fool trying to describe everything without sounding weird myself.” …just kidding! Nina loves writing. For fun, for work, for her honours degree in English. In fact, it’s her love for great writing that brings her back to the stage as our charming, mercurial, very hangry Theo.

See Theodora charm her fellow housemates in THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, opening next Wednesday at The Little Theatre! Tickets on sale at https://www.trybooking.com/CQQXW

“We'd better begin our preparations if we expect to be ready for tonight's work.”

"If I had my way there'd be no more fancy sauces"

William Langrehr is ARTHUR PARKER, a loyal friend of Mrs. Montague’s.

William was born with two years' work experience, and at 6 months old he could introduce himself with great articulation as "Yumyum". William has carried this Gift of Gab through his entire childhood, abandoning it only once he turned 18. In his quest to re-kindle what lost glory he has left, he sought to take the stage once more, hoping to find that same spark which year 12 drama lit in him. Like Arthur, then, perhaps he seeks to be thought of as greater than he is, and like Arthur he prefers a woman in charge.

Follow Arthur around in THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, opening next Wednesday at the Little Theatre! Tickets on sale now via: https://www.trybooking.com/CQQXW

24/06/2024

"Arthur is a headmaster."

Madelaine Jones is MRS. MONTAGUE, self-proclaimed expert on the supernatural

Madelaine is thrilled to be performing in the TGSS production of The Haunting of Hill House. Since returning to Adelaide in 2020, Madelaine has rediscovered her passion for acting, undertaking short-courses and going on to study at The Actors Studio Adelaide under Tony Knight. She made her stage debut in 2022 as Louise/Shona/Jeanine in Top Girls, followed by Alceste in The Misanthrope, and Mrs. Hale in Trifles.

Witness Mrs. Montague’s supernatural methods in THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, opening next Wednesday at the Little Theatre! Tickets on sale now via: https://www.trybooking.com/CQQXW

“No ghost, in all the long histories of ghosts, has ever hurt anyone physically.”

Leo Chang is DR. JOHN MONTAGUE, an academic.

After making his stage debut in the Little Theatre in 2023 with Breakfast of Champions (dir. Taylor Fernandez), and Uncle Vanya (dir. Connor Duncan), Leo (he/him) is excited to return for The Haunting of Hill House. Energized by the freedom and liberation of acting, Leo joined amateur theatre groups in Paris in 2018. After a long spell away from acting, he moved to Adelaide in 2023 to study veterinary science where he became involved in student theatre. Always motivated by putting on “different hats” and with an interest in mysteries and the supernatural, Leo is interested in exploring these in the play.

"It's harder to burn down a house than you think..."

Jace Grummet is LUKE SANDERSON, a light-hearted young man.

Jace has performed in many fringe shows before, and is an experienced and confident actor (and humble to boot). In actuality, he places a lot of importance on his ability to be constantly learning and growing. Something his character, Luke, seems to lack. Although Luke doesn't seem to take anything seriously, one thing they do share is their love of people-watching; they both understand that other people can be endlessly entertaining.

“I don’t wait on people.”

Lilian Johns is MRS. DUDLEY, Hill House’s morose caretaker

Lilian loves drama. Acting too. She’s been in love with it ever since her grand debut as a crying toddler in a tutu (this was not a character). Lilian is playing Mrs Dudley; a cranky and cryptic caretaker and welcomes you to figure out whether she is acting or not! How thrilling! Whinge whinge. Whinge some more. Good day sir!
