🏆 Congratulations to MLEI Executive Chair Nicholas Murphy. Last week, his leadership and contribution to the engineering industry was recognised by Engineers Australia through the awards of Engineering Executive and Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Australia. 🏆

Nicholas founded MLEI Consulting Engineers 17 years ago, and as Managing Director, grew the company into a 130-strong team across South Australia, Victoria, the Northern Territory, New South Wales, and Queensland. His recent transition to Executive Chair in 2023 marks a new chapter in his leadership journey, fuelled by an unwavering commitment to continued growth and innovation.

Nicholas's dedication, vision, and strategic leadership have been instrumental in MLEI's success story. Under his leadership, MLEI grew organically as well as through acquisitions, contributing to a remarkable 20% year-on-year growth. MLEI Consulting Engineers are proud to have provided critical Structural and Civil Engineering for the RAA’s new corporate premises for at 150 Grenfell Street, Adelaide. The 9300m3 new office tower was seamlessly integrated from two buildings into one, with two new floors, a central lift shaft, and a stunning curtain wall façade. Innovations include highest ESG design principles, and it may be the first upfront carbon-neutral certified office building in South Australia.

MLEI Managing Director Ben Rice reflected on the engineering outcome, "This project was a culmination of combining sustainable structural design practice through re-use and justification of existing structure and practical design. From detailed analysis of existing foundations to full earthquake building upgrade the project required careful review of all elements. We thank all our project partners for their unwavering dedication."

This included the design and construction of an international standard gymnasium, innovative teaching spaces and versatile multipurpose rooms at the new Fortiter Gymnasium, as well as a new activity hall, new 3-storey building, and major ELC refurbishments at the St Johns campus.

MLEI Project Manager Ryan Thyer said, “We collaborated closely with the project team to navigate construction challenges, such as market pressures during Covid, to deliver this exceptional project for our esteemed client, Concordia College. We successfully integrated staged construction works into the design to enable the school to remain fully operational throughout construction.”

Our scope includes aquatic structures, hydraulic design, and chemical treatment. It also includes seamless coordination between civil, structural and aquatic engineering of the pool shells, balance tanks, water filtration systems, plantroom design and chemical treatment with the delivery requirements.

MLEI is proud to announce a change to our Leadership Team. To support our recent growth, Ben Rice is now Managing Director as Nicholas Murphy is elevated to Executive Chair of the Board. This change represents a significant milestone for the company and will enable MLEI to continue its strong growth.

As Executive Director for the last 8 years, Ben has been instrumental in driving our workplace culture, leading the Graduate & Leadership Development Programs and delivering successful engineering projects. Ben will remain engaged with industry while having a stronger focus on the operation of the MLEI group of companies, as he leads us in our purpose to develop people, deliver trusted expertise, and shape communities.

After founding the company 16.5 years ago, outgoing Managing Director Nicholas has grown the company from its first humble office on Unley Road, to today’s 135-strong team across multiple offices, multiple sectors and that is dedicated to the company vision, purpose, and values. Nicholas will continue to lead MLEI’s Mergers and Acquisitions to build on the 7 transactions so far and contribute to Strategic Recruitment and Business Development.
