Today is the funeral for my Uncle Bill Anderssen.

Uncle Bill was a respected member of the legal community. He worked for my Grandfather in his law firm Anderssen & Co and went on to be partner of the firm with my other other Uncle the late Anders Anderssen. Bill then opened his own firm in Eagle Street, Brisbane - Anderssen Lawyers in the early 2000’s. This firm is still operating today under this name.

The details today for the funeral are included in the second picture. The funeral will be held in Toowoomba but you can also attend online.

Another day, another great outcome for my client at mediation.

It is hard to believe where we got to today from where the parties started. It is a great outcome for my client but even more importantly, for the children.

A lovely family law client gave me this beautiful gift yesterday. I feel very grateful that I was able to help her. We mediated for 11.5 hours which thankfully resulted in final consent orders.

A lovely thank you gift from a grateful family law client today.

After a long and quite challenging legal dispute we came to final orders by consent at a mediation and followed by Court today and my client was very grateful.

It has been my third mediation this week and today was a great outcome.

We have a culture of kindness at our firm. It's the way we just do things. It is that simple. It is certainly not a marketing gimmick.

I am lucky to come from a family where both of my parents are incredibly kind people. We were brought up to care about people and take action to help people.

A lot of people come to us when they are feeling vulnerable and going through a difficult time in life. We treat them with compassion and empathy. Often we go further than our role requires, because that is often the decent thing to do.

23/02/2023

Outside of my home, this is where I spend most of my time!

Luckily it's a great place to work & we intentionally harness a calm, positive atmosphere for ourselves and our employees.

Sometimes the most important thing you can do is listen and treat people with kindness. Our client's know we care.

Terry Anderssen Lawyers is celebrating 30 years in business this year!

Originally my father (Terry Anderssen) set up his practice in Zillmere in 1993 and operated out of that location until 2000.

In 2000, he relocated to the Chermside office which is where we still operate out of.

A lot has changed in the last 30 years, particularly how we as Lawyers now juggle our business operation/marketing hats and our Lawyer hats.

It is a constant learning curve and I am glad that I have been able to share the ride for the past 13 years as an employee

However even prior to that, I was always interested and involved with the business.

How I treat my client's! 👀

One thing I try to be mindful of when dealing with clients is:

👉How my clients are being impacted by the way I communicate with them and how I treat them?

One thing that always stuck with me and is a main motivator for me to always be mindful for how I treat my client's comes from my own experience when I initially went through my own family law matter prior to my becoming a lawyer or even studying law, fourteen years ago.

I recall the Lawyers and Barristers who represented me often seemed detached, fairly uninterested and often I felt very alone. I felt scared and I felt their cold detached approach made me feel worse🤦

It felt like they had no real understanding of what it was like from my perspective as a Mother 🤱and they had no idea or care about how the stress of going through the legal system was causing me so much anguish.

👱‍♀️I am particularly aware of how intimidating a legal environment can be. Particularly for vulnerable clients, clients from minorities or other ethnicities or our first nations people who have traditionally had negative experiences with people in positions of power and authority.

👉This is why I care and why I make an effort to treat my clients with empathy and compassion💙

This is an important aspect of how we run our business and is one of the main reasons that we receive excellent Google reviews.

Our clients' genuinely know we care.

My experience as an Accredited Crisis Telephone Counsellor also helps as I have learnt how to effectively manage people in a crisis.

My experience going through my own family law matter (twice- when my daughter was 3 and when she was 12) also gives me a unique ability to be able to walk in my client's shoes and know the stress they are experiencing going through their legal journey.

The silence is deafening after 10 women killed in just 20 days. It's time to shout about it 11/02/2023

https://www.crikey.com.au/2023/02/09/men-killed-10-women-20-days-silence/?fbclid=IwAR1Jo-UMwDbehPZqv2AYcuO3y7XVC9vEv3MPy7TZoE53Snsir_cszloYF_8

Over the last 20 days, 10 women in Australia have been killed!

That is just horrific.

Despite growing public awareness, domestic and family violence is a key issue in this country and without proper reform and funding women will continue to be killed.

There are good things on the way. I have seen excellent improvements in the way the Federal Circuit and Family Court respond to matters that indicate domestic violence through the initial intake and processing of these matters to specialised lists.

However, in the dv space- it is chronically underfunded. Women are choosing to stay in abusive and violent relationships and marriages as they know otherwise they will be thrown often into poverty.

Tragically it is older women who are the fastest growing group to experience homelessness in Australia.

This should not be the choice women make- to escape violence and abuse to end up in poverty and experience homelessness.

We need better solutions and funding.

We also need to continue to work on education and work towards cultural change bigtime as well to prevent domestic violence from occurring in the first place.

The silence is deafening after 10 women killed in just 20 days. It's time to shout about it Are Australians becoming complacent about the scourge of domestic violence? Are the figures just too overwhelming? If so, that must stop.

👏👏👏👏In the domestic and family violence space, we have been waiting for when this day will come. One of the major achievements- will be the new laws that make coercive control a criminal offence. The changes that are going to come into place are the result of the incredible work of so many across the dfv sector who have fought each step of the way for these changes and all the incremental changes that have come before. This will not only lead to cultural change by making it abundantly clear what behaviours are not tolerated in society (particularly the laws in relation to criminalising coercive control), but it will also provide some relief to the survivors of domestic and family violence, to the families who are having to live on after losing family members women & children to dfv (at least one woman a week is killed in Australia by a current or past partner).

I am also interested to see how the family law system adapts with these new laws.

The QLD government has committed to the following reforms that includes:
◼️New laws and programs to recognise, and prevent DFV including making coercive control a criminal offence
◼️ A Commission of Inquiry into police responses to domestic and family violence
◼️Expansion of the Domestic and Family Violence courts
◼️Better support for women
◼️A special strategy for First Nations communities
◼️Funding for perpetrator programs to change men’s behaviour and stop the cycle of violence
◼️Expansion of High-Risk Teams and co-responder models to ensure victims receive a joint response from police and DFV services.
◼️Increased respectful relationships education to all Queensland children and young people
