Do older EVs = more battery fires?

We don't have a definitive answer to this question (only time will tell!), but what we can point to is the Nissan Leaf, which first started selling in 2010.

As of July 2023, there were 650,000 Nissan Leaf's on the road globally, and we've been able to verify 11 battery fires.

What's interesting is the Leaf does not have active battery cooling, unlike most other EVs.

Please note this is emerging data, is not exhaustive, and the age of the 11 EVs that went into thermal runaway is not known in all incidents.
