👓 Meta just unveiled their latest prototype of augmented reality glasses, Orion. 👓
Before we get caught up in the hype, 's Professor Martie-Louise Verreynne breaks down the challenges Meta will need to overcome to make AR glasses a part of our everyday lives:
1️⃣ Ease of Use: Will they fit over your prescription glasses? Are they comfy enough to wear all day?
2️⃣ Physical Comfort: Can they keep cool, or will you feel like you’re wearing a tiny heater on your face? Plus, no one wants a case of vertigo.
3️⃣ Practicality: Battery life, data security, and display quality. Because no one wants AR glasses that run out of juice halfway through a movie or leave you worrying about privacy.
4️⃣ Psychological Barriers: Will people actually want to wear these in public? And will they trust the privacy controls?
However, it’s not too different from the early days of smartphones. Back then, there were sceptics, but also people who couldn’t wait to embrace the tech—and the same thing can happen with AR glasses.
Imagine holding a meeting where your notes are floating right in front of you, attending a class from your living room as if you’re in the room, or collaborating with colleagues across the globe without ever touching a screen.
👓 Would you give AR glasses a try? 👓
❗️ Imagine living with constant pain as your immune system works against you. That’s the reality for 23 million people with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), especially women. But hope is on the horizon.
A team led by ’s Professor Ranjeny Thomas is developing a therapy that could reprogram the immune system to keep RA in long-term remission. Their project, Reset Rheumatoid Arthritis, is nearing clinical trials.
Early results are promising—some participants went into remission within 8 weeks. If successful, this could not only transform RA treatment but immunotherapies like this might also be used for other autoimmune diseases like Type 1 diabetes. 🙌
🌟 Exciting News for Future UQ Students! 🌟

ChatGPT - is it an opportunity or challenge for students today?
Generative AI is changing education—fast. Two years since ChatGPT’s release, schools and universities are figuring out how to tackle its challenges and opportunities.
's Dr. Jason Lodge highlights 5 key areas the higher education sector needs to address:
🧠 1. Teach “people” skills alongside tech skills: While it’s crucial to teach students how to use AI, it's important to focus on what makes us human—critical thinking, emotional understanding, and independent learning.
🤖 2. Bridge the tech gap: Some students embrace AI, others are hesitant, often due to fears around cheating. We need to ensure that all students can confidently and ethically use AI tools.
💼 3. Prepare for future jobs: Schools and universities need to update what they teach to help students be ready for the new kinds of work that are coming.
🔍 4. Make sense of complex info: As AI's get better at handling data, humans need to navigate social complexities and make decisions. Education need to prioritise teaching these skills.
🎓 5. Lead the change: Universities should leverage their expertise to guide how AI is used in education, rather than following tech companies' lead.

Every 12 minutes, an Australian dies from cardiovascular disease.
Associate Professor Joy Wolfram and her lab are working to change that by harnessing extracellular vesicles (EVs) to deliver medicine precisely where it’s needed.
Think of EVs as text messages sent between your body’s cells, telling each cell what to do. By deciphering this cellular language, we can use it to send instructions to specific locations in the body.
This innovative work is just one of the reasons why Dr Wolfram is this year’s proud recipient of the Queensland Young Tall Poppy Award. 🏆 🎉
