Reef pest feasts on ‘sea sawdust’ 22/07/2024

CMS researcher Dr Ben Mos and colleagues have uncovered an under the sea phenomenon where coral-destroying crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS) larvae have been feasting on blue-green algae bacteria known as ‘sea sawdust’.

The team of marine scientists from The University of Queensland and Southern Cross University found COTS larvae grow and thrive when raised on an exclusive diet of Trichodesmium – a bacteria that often floats on the ocean’s surface in large slicks.
Until now, scientists had thought almost nothing touched these threadlike bacteria because of their toxicity, size, and poor nutritional content.

Blue-green algae blooms can extend hundreds to thousands of kilometres across the ocean and often float on the surface in large rafts like sawdust – hence the name. They play a crucial role in marine ecosystems by making nitrogen from the atmosphere available to other sea life, but now we know it is also a food source.
By knowing how sea sawdust helps COTS thrive, we can potentially change the way we combat this very damaging coral predator.

Happier humpbacks 07/07/2024

Humpback whales off the coast of Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) show flexibility with change! CMS researchers from the Cetacean Ecology Group set out to measure the baseline health of these whales, but instead found differences in gene expression and stress hormones between 2020 and 2021. The researchers said that there are multiple hypotheses for the potential natural and human impacts that could be driving these changes.

Genetics provide key to fight crown-of-thorns starfish 24/05/2024

In a world first, CMS PhD candidates Marie Morin and Mathias Jönsson have analysed the genetics of the crown-of-thorns-starfish (CoTS) on the Great Barrier Reef. CoTS are voracious predators that can have significant impacts on coral reef health, and scientists are working to understand the dynamics of CoTS outbreaks to better target management programs. This new research provides important insights into seasonal variations and breeding behaviour, which may lead to the development of new ways to predict and control CoTS outbreaks. Amazing work by Marie, Mathias and Prof Bernie Degnan!

Enhanced protection for marine jewel Mudjimba Reef 25/03/2024

The power of citizen science! Between 2021-2022, volunteer divers from UniDive conducted a series of ecological assessments of Mudjimba Reef on the Sunshine Coast, led by CMS Deputy Director Associate Professor Chris Roelfsema. Recently, the Queensland Government announced enhanced protections for Mudjimba Reef, approving the installation of six reef protection markers to let vessel owners know where they can safely drop their anchors without damaging the reef. UniDive's ecological assessments of the area were used to help guide the Queensland Government's decision to provide additional protections for this unique reef environment. This demonstrates the power and utility of citizen science for decision-makers, and is great news for Mudjimba Reef! New spaces for ocean life 14/02/2024

Science meets art with these amazing Living Seawalls, a project developed by the Sydney Institute of Marine Science in collaboration with the Reef Design Lab. The Living Seawalls design mimics natural nooks and crevices in rocky shore environments to encourage marine plants and animals to settle on the concrete panels, and has been hugely successful so far. Renovations at Manly's Fairy Bower ocean pool provided an opportunity to install new living seawall panels, which have proven to be a hit with both locals and marine critters! You can read more about the Living Seawalls project at the link below.

From the coast of Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island), the eastern Australian humpback whale population can be viewed every year during their annual migration from their summer feeding grounds in the Antarctic to their breeding grounds in tropical waters in the winter. Researchers from UQ's Cetacean Ecology Group are working to measure the health of these whales as the population reaches full recovery from near extinction due to commercial whaling. These drone photographs show some candid moments captured while collecting data to measure the energy reserves of humpback whales during the migratory period. It turns out sometimes the whales study us!

The group recently found that gene expression in humpback whale blubber reflects physiological changes between the migratory seasons. You can read the open source publication via this link: https://doi.org/10.1111/mec.17209

All photographs were taken by Jacob Linsky under permit during the 2020 and 2021 humpback whale migrations.
