Sooo CUPPING?!

Yes, it’s the treatment that looks much more painful than it is (although initially it is a little uncomfortable… it is worth it).

Cupping is often used in conjunction with acupuncture and may be applicable in a range of muscular and inflammatory issues.

We use glass, plastic or rubber cups and they are applied to selected points on the body by using heat or vacuum to reduce the atmospheric pressure within the cup, drawing the skin and underlying tissue into the cup much in the same way a plunger works on a blocked sink. And we know how satisfying that is so can you imagine how it would be with your body?

Cupping is traditionally used to promote peripheral blood flow and healthy Wei Qi (the Chinese Medicine version of the immune system). Marks on the skin that resemble bruises may be evident for a short time after cupping however this is a normal reaction and they fade relatively quickly.

If you have more questions about cupping, please give us a call;

If you’ve seen S*x and the City, it’s likely you remember Charlotte’s experience with acupuncture during her fertility journey! Likely your experience here will be much more calming.

Chinese medicine and acupuncture has a long history of treating and supporting women’s health. One of the earliest Chinese medical texts dedicated to gynaecology dates back to 652 AD which were written by Sun Simiao.

He emphasised the importance of supporting women’s health by saying “Now the present collection of treatments is arranged by placing the treatments for women and children first, and those for husbands and the elderly afterwards. The significance of this structure is that it venerates the root.”

By saying this, we see him emphasising on how beautiful the continuation of life is through women and how important our health is for this continuation.

Your fertility journey is individual to you and your body but you have support all around you, including here at Balance Acupuncture with Louise.

Today we are shouting out to our beautiful Principal Acupuncturist, Louise. Louise was first introduced to acupuncture as a patient and the experience was to prove so powerful as to inspire her to change career, leaving the busy maternity and nursing wards to become a Chinese medicine practitioner.

This life-changing experience came in her mid-30’s when a longed-for second child was conceived with the assistance of regular acupuncture treatments. Later, when her busy family life with two energetic children had been making day-to-day living difficult and Louise found herself existing rather than living, it was a series of acupuncture treatments that allowed joy back into her life.

We get a lot of FAQ’s before people book their first appointment. Many asking what to expect and the dreaded - does it hurt question!

So, does it hurt?

Acupuncture does not typically cause pain or discomfort. Most patients describe a slight, dull ache or a tingling sensation when the needle is inserted. This can be a sign that the acupuncture point is being activated.

If you do experience any pain or discomfort - please advise your therapist immediately! We only hope you feel calm and present during your appointment.

And what can you expect?

Your first acupuncture appointment includes a diagnostic assessment and preliminary treatment. We will implement a treatment plan which can include a combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment strategies, herbal formulas and nutritional and lifestyle advice.

Follow up appointments will continue with your treatment plan.

We’ve recently discovered the role acupuncture plays in supporting people suffering with chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting (CINV).

It is one of the most common and debilitating side effects, exerting a detrimental influence on the quality of life (QOL) of cancer patients and reducing their compliance towards conventional therapies.

We believe cancer patients are benefited by supporting Western Medicine’s approach with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). At Balance Acupuncture Brisbane we aim to keep our needle technique light and as pain free as possible.

Acupuncture could be considered a supplementary therapy for relieving symptoms of CINV

Traditional Chinese Medicine has long been used to provide wellness support and promote longevity.

Acupuncture has a cumulative effect, so as your body heals and finds balance, time between acupuncture treatments lengthens.

I will help you identify what you want and need from your body, helping you increase your body awareness and promoting self-healing.

We start every treatment with a 60-minute initial assessment which includes a diagnostic assessment and preliminary treatment. Louise will help you take control of your health and wellbeing with an individualised plan of treatments, nutritional guidance and/or herbal formulas.

So, how does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture involves inserting fine, sterile, single-use needles into specific sites (the acupuncture points) along the body’s meridians (energy pathways) to help clear blockages and encourage Qi (energy) to flow through the body as normal.

By stimulating the body's natural healing abilities, it helps to promote physical and emotional well-being.

What you need to know about acupuncture needles 💭

One question we commonly get, is does Acupuncture hurt? Many are afraid of getting their shots or blood tests, because of the impact of the needles.

However, acupuncture needles are not your ordinary hypodermic needles. Hypodermic needles are thicker, and have hollowed interior to allow fluids to pass through. Acupuncture needles, on the other hand, are very fine and do not have a hollowed interior.

Acupuncture needles shouldn’t hurt during the process - if you are still wary, come in for a chat, and there are many modalities we can look at to help you - like cupping, or the use of Chinese Herbal Medicine.

30/08/2021

Many people hold fears around needles, and so there is a common misconception that because acupuncture uses needles, it will inflict pain on the patient.

We find this is the single biggest deterrent before people try acupuncture.

However, most don’t feel anything, and if they do feel any pain, it might be described as a chi sensation. It can be heavy, throbbing, or jumping, all of which are positive responses.

The treatment isn’t meant to hurt, however, sometimes your first treatment may cause some different experiences due to specific energy points on your body being activated for the first time

Did you know we do preconception care programs?

Your health prior to conception influences the health of your children and grandchildren.

Undertaking a preconception care program that covers all aspects of your health four to six months prior to conceiving ensures that your body is in the very best condition and is well prepared to conceive and to sustain a healthy pregnancy.

Your initial 90-minute appointment will assess your current reproductive health, diet, lifestyle, exercise, stressors and environmental toxin exposure.

Together with an acugraph reading and assessment of the tongue and pulse, this information will be used to formulate a Chinese medical diagnosis and treatment plan.

Your treatment will make you more aware of the cyclical nature of your body, and provides opportunities for you to learn more about the fundamentals of preconception care in a caring and supportive environment.

Your body is continuously trying to communicate with you ✨

In life, we must always consider the balance between yin and yang.

When we feel we are stepping toward something too much, it's time to step back.

When we feel we are too empty in one area, it's time to fill it up.

These forces complement each other.

What areas of your life are you lacking, or overcompensating?

The AcuGraph is a simple diagnostic tool which utilises modern technology to measure the energy levels of each acupuncture meridian.

The AcuGraph is a simple, painless, diagnostic tool and takes no more than a few minutes to examine your meridians.

It visually displays how the meridians are interacting with each other and whether the energy is stuck, deficient or balanced.

By testing your meridians, I can get a better understanding of your current health and potential health issues.

This allows us to make informed decisions on the best treatment to bring your body back into balance.

Fill yourself with things that make you feel good.

Wellness is not linear - there are so many things to consider - food, sleep, stress management, herbal supplementation, exercise (and acupuncture 😜)

Find the mix that works for you.

As Buddha says - to keep the body in good health is a duty. Otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong, and clear.

Time and patience can be our best friends, if we allow them to.

In this busy world, when are you taking moments for yourself, and truly relaxing - letting the minutes pass you by without guilt.

Our clients often say an hour on the table can feel as good as a night of sleep.

Even if you don't make it into the clinic this week, I recommend finding time for a book, coffee, and a comfy pillow - it can be magical ✨
