🚣 Lower Back Pain in Rowing: Training Load Considerations 🚣

Research suggests that around 2 out of every 3 adult rowers will have low back pain in a 12-month period, compared with 1 out of every 3 people in the community (non-rowers)

There is no current research that specifically addresses the prevention of lower back in rowing, so it is it is pertinent to modify exposure to known risk factors where possible.

For example, to monitor response to training load and alter where needed, avoid load spikes and avoid high volumes of ergometer training.

As physios and other allied health professionals this can be a difficult area to make changes in, but an important one if you are working with a crew/school/team or seeing recurrent issues related to this. I would encourage open discussions with the whole management team, definitely including the coach, and provide information and practical solutions for implementation.

For example, having some watt bike sessions or running sessions to help maintain cardiovascular fitness rather than long intense sessions on the erg.

Ideally these little changes will not only assist with minimising injuries, it will also improve crew performance by keeping as many people in the boat as possible for on water sessions!

SOLE THERAPY – OVERCOME YOUR CHRONIC HEEL PAIN

Heel pain is quite common, especially in the older, non-sporting population. It’s one of those problems that everyone you meet seems to have a different solution for, which can leave you wondering where to go and what to do. We thought we’d give you a step by step process to help restore a pain-free step.

STEP 1: KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DEALING WITH – GET A DIAGNOSIS
The first essential step to take with plantar heel pain, is to establish a diagnosis. There are multiple structures that may contribute to pain, besides the most frequently blamed – plantar fascia.

STEP 2: GET GOING WITH A PLAN
The second step is to determine an individualised treatment plan that addresses the underlying contributing factors to injury.

STEP 3: GET STRONG AND GET ACTIVE
The third step, once your pain has appropriately reduced, is to implement strategies to return to activity/performance and reduce recurrence.

Let's talk all things Plantar Fasciitis🤯👣

Do you get out of bed and feel pain and stiffness in your foot when you stand up? It may not be the cold weather causing it! ⠀
Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common causes of pain in the feet, the plantar fascia is a thick web of interconnected ligaments that runs along the length of the bottom of the foot and provides support to the foot and acts as a spring whilst walking and running. ⠀

Overuse, increased pressure, and wear and tear during regular activities or exercise, can lead to damage and tearing of the ligaments, causing inflammation, leading to pain and stiffness of the foot. ⠀
The pain is an intense, sharp sensation in the heel and mid foot that gradually worsens over time, and is usually worse in the mornings, after sitting for prolonged periods, and after exercise, although pain usually decreases during exercise. ⠀

Some commonly used treatments in Clinic at Excel include soft tissue massage, stretching, ankle mobilisation and even dry needling if necessary.

So if you or your friend have been complaining of foot pain tag them below and resolve that pain now.

👟FOOT CORE TRAINING FOR RUNNERS👟

What am I on about? Just me getting a little excited when looking into a recent research paper. Standard.
🦶
No 2020 trip to a physiotherapy clinic was without mention of new outdoor fitness goals. Unfortunately, as recreational running increases in popularity, its accompanying nemesis increases proportionally: running related injuries.
🦶
This paper has shown that recreational runners randomised to this particular foot training protocol had a 2.42-fold lower rate of running related injuries. (And this study was performed over 12 months!)
🦶
Stay tuned to stories through the week looking at this exercise protocol in more detail!
